TEST 5
Neil Armstrong was born on the 5th of August 1930 in Ohio, in the United States. He was
fascinated by airplanes from a very early age and was determined to get his pilot’s license.
In 1947, after leaving Blume High School, Neil went to Purdue University to study aerospace
engineering on a navy scholarship. He served as a navy pilot in the Korean War and flew 78
combat missions. He completed his science degree in 1955. He then worked for NASA, until
1971. He flew 200 different types of aircrafts, including jets, rockets, helicopters and gliders.
On 23rd December 1968, Armstrong was chosen as the Commander for Appollo 11, the manned
missions to the moon. Appollo 11 was to orbit the moon and the lunar module called Eagle, was
to land on the surface. There were three people in Appollo 11. Armstrong and his friend Aldrin
landed on the moon in Eagle. He received many honours for his historic moon landing. He died
on the 25th August 2012.
