PART 3. BEACH CAMPING

16-year-old Harry William writes about his experience while camping on a beach.
Among the numerous leisure activities by the seaside, I like camping near the sea the
most. Last weekend, my family went camping at a popular beach.
Beach camping is not as easy as I thought. First, we needed to make sure that we
brought along all the necessary supplies which could help us stay safe and protected.
The most important thing as you can imagine is a beach tent with sand stakes as there
are strong winds on the beach. Sleeping bags and blankets are also important as it can
get quite chilly at night. We also brought a beach umbrella for keeping the sun away,
beach chairs for relaxing, trash bags for collecting our rubbish and a broom to tidy our
tent up.

My favourite moment during our camping trip was making a beach fire. It was very
difficult to light a campfire as a result of the wind. That’s why we needed to pick a good
spot that wasn’t too windy. We started by gathering fire-starting materials like small
twigs, grass and dry seaweed and put them all together. Then, we placed pieces of
smaller wood and sticks parallel to one another on top. Next, we used our lighter to
light the end of a tightly-rolled newspaper and stuck it right in the middle. Once the
kindling started, the flames started to spread from there.
We cooked lots of hot dogs. Not only are hot dogs one of the easiest things to make
over a fire, but they’re also really delicious when there is a bit of char on the outside! I
even tried to make bacon-wrapped hot dogs and they turned out wonderful! My mother
roasted pieces of bananas, apples, pineapples, and peaches. We enjoyed them with a
scoop of vanilla ice cream to make it a full dessert. It was the best day that I ever had
in my life.

B Zoos are places where almost all of us go to visit at least once.
C Rats, for example, are everywhere and they are a danger to human health.

H If their numbers are not reduced, then the consequences could be serious.

GOING TO THE ZOO

by Charlie Roth, aged 16
I remember when I was a child, we went to the local zoo as part of a school trip. We
spent most of the day there and saw many different wild animals. 16. ___. It was in a
large cage, where there were many rocks and some large trees too. I'd seen many

Some people believe that all wild animals should be protected. 17. ______. They
argue that it is a violation of animal rights. It is necessary for everyone to treat animals
humanely, and we need to stop any form of animal exploitation sự lạm dụng, animal

FRENCH FRIES IN BELGIUM
In Belgium, no one calls fried potatoes French fries. No one is absolutely certain
who 21.____________ the fried potato. Belgian historians argued that it all began
in the 1680s during a cold winter. With the rivers frozen, the locals had no fish to eat,
so they fried potatoes in oil. French fries started to emerge abroad during the First
World War when British and American soldiers discovered fried potatoes in Belgium. As
French was the official 22. ____________ in Belgium at the time, the soldiers assumed
they were in France.
It makes sense. But the main reason Belgians hate the name French fries is that French
fries are different from Belgian fries. The proper Belgian fried potato
is 23.____________ with enormous patience and skill. For example, the correct
potato must be used, it must be peeled by hand and sliced into the correct size. Then it
is fried once in beef dripping at 160 degrees, 24.___________ aside until it cools
and then fried a second time at 180 degrees.
And it’s not done yet. This is slow fast food. So the fries are scooped out of the
bubbling oil, dropped into a large sieve and then shaken to remove any excess fat.
Then they are scooped into a paper cone, but not all at once. The correct method is to
serve a small portion, add a dash of salt, add some more fries, then put on more salt
and so on. It 25. ___________ time, but the fries you finally get are perfect, soft on
the inside and crisp on the outside. Then you just need to choose
a 26.___________ from the long list of options.
