Exam Section Overview: Speaking

During the ELLT speaking test, you meet with an examiner face-to-face over video call.

The exam is broken into 4 stages and lasts approximately 30 minutes depending on the student (this can
be extended if needed).

As part of the test, there is an ID check and introduction, a short oral presentation task (that you must
prepare beforehand) and a free-flowing question and answer session where examiners discuss your
essay and other 2 components.

The speaking part of the ELLT is divided into four different stages.

Stage one –

ID verification. In the first part of your test, the Examiner will ask you to show your ID to verify your
identity. Then he or she will ask a few questions about yourself, such as the place you live or your
hobbies.

Stage 2 –

presentation. You must prepare for this stage before the interview. You will receive the stage 2
presentation task, 24 to 48 hours before your assessment time. Your presentation must include
examples of positive and negative changes, include a personal reflection on the topic and between three
and five minutes long.

During the interview, The Examiner will ask you to present your presentation. He or she will not assist or
interrupt you in any way during your presentation. You must start your presentation by saying I will now
begin my presentation which will start a timer, and end with thank you for your attention, which will
signal the end of your presentation.

Note that while you're allowed to use notes or cue cards with prompts, we advise against reading from
them as examiner will deduct points for this.

Stage three –

discussion about your essay. During stage three of your speaking exam, the Examiner will ask you
questions about your essay. This stage will evaluate your spontaneous use of language.

The Examiner will focus their questions on the following areas: Clarification of facts opinions presented
in your essay Research methods used Personal experience and reflection The vocabulary used in your
essay.

Stage four –
discussion based on a prompt. The Examiner will share an image with you. You will have 15 seconds to
study the image and then the examiner will ask you some questions about it.

Assessment Criteria and Checklist

When assessing your speaking, examiners use assessment criteria to award a score for each of the four
areas:

• Task achievement

• Target language

• Fluency and Discourse management

• Pronunciation

Understanding the assessment criteria for the ELLT can help you prepare for your test and how to better
approach your speaking exam.

So, what does each of the areas mean?

• Task achievement refers to how and how clearly your presentation answers the presentation
task, and how and how clearly you answer the examiner questions

• Target language refers to the grammar and vocabulary you used for the task and how
accurate you were

• Fluency and discourse management refers to your delivery: how clearly and without hesitation
you speak, and how you connect your ideas

• Pronunciation refers to how clear your pronunciation is and how coherent your intonation is

Although the speaking part of the exam is mostly spontaneous, here is a set of questions you can bear in
mind when preparing for it. They will help you check that all important aspects are covered.
