Terms
1. Prejudice – Prejudice means to judge other people negatively or see them as inferior.
E.g. People’s religious beliefs, the religion they come from, the clothes they wear, etc.
2. Stereotype – When we fix people into one image, we create a stereotype. E.g. Stingy,
lazy, etc.
1. What does the constitution say with regard to equality? Why do you think it is
important for all people to be equal?
Our constitution provides that the state shall not discriminate against any citizen on
the basis of religion, caste, race, region, etc.
Everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
Untouchability is seen as a crime and is legally abolished.
People are free to choose the kind of job they wish to do.
Government jobs are open to all people.
Thus, it is the responsibility of the government to take specific steps to ensure
equality of all because only then our society can develop in true sense.
Points
Preamble is the first page of the Constitution that clearly states that all Indians are
entitled to equality of status and opportunity.
The government refers to Dalits as scheduled castes (SC).
India is a secular country where people of different religions and faiths have the
freedom to practice and follow their religion.
Constitution is a document that laid out the rules by which the nation would
function.
