CHAPTER 2 – DIVERSITY AND DISCRIMINATION

Terms
1. Prejudice – Prejudice means to judge other people negatively or see them as inferior.
E.g. People’s religious beliefs, the religion they come from, the clothes they wear, etc.

2. Stereotype – When we fix people into one image, we create a stereotype. E.g. Stingy,
lazy, etc.

3. Discrimination – Discrimination happens when people act on their prejudices or

stereotypes.

Answer the following

1. What does the constitution say with regard to equality? Why do you think it is
important for all people to be equal?

 Our constitution provides that the state shall not discriminate against any citizen on
the basis of religion, caste, race, region, etc.
 Everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
 Untouchability is seen as a crime and is legally abolished.
 People are free to choose the kind of job they wish to do.
 Government jobs are open to all people.
 Thus, it is the responsibility of the government to take specific steps to ensure
equality of all because only then our society can develop in true sense.

2. What happens when people act on their prejudices or stereotypes?

 Stereotypes stop us from looking at each person as a unique individual with

his/her own special qualities and skills that are different from others.
 They fit large number of people into only one pattern or type.
 It affects all of us as they prevent us from doing certain things that we might
otherwise be good at.

3. Write a short note on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

 Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is considered as the ‘Father of the Indian Constitution’ and
is also the best-known leader of the Dalits.
 Dr. B.R Ambedkar fought for the rights of the Dalit community.
 He encouraged Dalits to send their children to school.
 He urged the Dalits to take on different kinds of government jobs to move out
of the caste system.
 He led many efforts of Dalits to gain entry into temples.

Points

 Preamble is the first page of the Constitution that clearly states that all Indians are
entitled to equality of status and opportunity.
 The government refers to Dalits as scheduled castes (SC).
 India is a secular country where people of different religions and faiths have the
freedom to practice and follow their religion.
 Constitution is a document that laid out the rules by which the nation would
function.
