1) What is an element/compound/mixture?
The basic building block of an element and a compound is the atom. In a compound,
atoms of different elements are chemically bonded together.
Elements, compounds, and mixtures can exist in all states of matter: solid, liquid, and
gas.
When elements form compounds, the properties of the compound are different from
the properties of its constituent elements. This is because when elements combine to
form a compound, some individual properties of the elements are lost and the newly
formed compound has new properties.
Elements are pure substances made up of only one type of atom. Compounds are
substances made up of two or more different types of atoms chemically bonded
together. Mixtures are combinations of two or more substances that are not
chemically bonded together.
The properties of a compound are different from its constituents because when
elements combine to form a compound, some individual properties of the elements
are lost. The newly formed compound has new properties because chemical reactions
involve the rearrangement of atoms, not their destruction.
Separation techniques for mixtures are applied in various real-life scenarios such as in
the food industry for separating different food particles, in wastewater treatment to
separate solid waste from water, in laboratories for separating different components of
a sample, etc.
6) In what ways can the components of a mixture be identified based on their physical
properties?
The components of a mixture can be identified based on their physical properties such
as their state (solid, liquid, gas), boiling point, melting point, density, solubility in
water or other solvents, magnetic properties, etc.
Additional Research:
1. Elements are listed in the periodic table, which I also studied, and as of 2023, 118
elements have been discovered.
