CIRCULATORY
SYSTEM

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Explain how the Infer how one’s

respiratory system
Describe the parts lifestyle can affect
works to transport
and functions of the the functioning of
nutrients and other
circulatory system molecules to and respiratory and
from the different circulatory systems
parts of the body
THE HEART
One of the complex organs in the body
highly muscular
It pumps blood through involuntary contractions
of the cardiac muscles
PARTS OF THE HEART

Vena cava Pulmonary vein

Right atrium Left atrium

Right ventricle Left ventricle

Pulmonary artery Aorta

WHAT IS THE ROLE
OF THE HEART?
The heart is a pump and its role is to pump
blood around the body. The right side pumps
deoxygenated blood to the lungs. The left side
pumps oxygenated blood to the body.

The heart contains valves to prevent the

backflow of blood.
ACTIVITY

What makes your heart beat fast? Check (⁄) on the blank if the given situation causes
your heart to beat faster than normal.

___ you crossed a busy street ___ you forgot your ID

___ you took Math exams ___ you forgot your wallet
___ your campus crush sat beside you ___ you lost your cell phone
___ your teacher wants to meet you ___ you did not do your assignment
___ you lost your way home ___ you will donate blood
___ you went home late ___ you heard the ambulance coming
THE DOUBLE
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Mammals have a double circulatory system. This means

that blood travels through the heart twice in one
circulation of the body.
BLOOD VESSELS Blood vessels: -passageways that distribute blood
OF THE HEART throughout the body

3 types:

Artery- carries blood away from the heart and

generally transports oxygen-rich blood

Vein- carries blood to the heart and generally

transports oxygen-poor, carbon dioxide-rich blood

Capillaries- smallest blood vessels in your vascular

system. It transports blood, nutrients and oxygen to
cells in your organs and body systems.
PULMONARY CIRCULATION
This part of the cycle carries oxygen-depleted blood away
3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF
from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart.
CIRCULATION THAT OCCUR
REGULARLY IN THE BODY
SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION
IT carries oxygenated blood away from the heart and to
other parts of the body.

CORONARY CIRCULATION
Movement of the blood through the tissues of the heart.
provides the heart with oxygenated blood so it can function
properly.
VALVES IN
THE HEART

Pulmonary valve Mitral valve/

Bicuspid valve

Aortic valve
Tricuspid valve
BLOOD FLOW

1 - THE RIGHT SIDE

Deoxygenated blood passes through the vena
cava and into the right atrium.
BLOOD FLOW

2 - THE RIGHT SIDE

Blood moves from the right atrium to the right
ventricle, passing through the tricuspid valve.
BLOOD FLOW

3 - THE RIGHT SIDE

Blood is pumped from the right ventricle and
into the pulmonary artery through the
pulmonary valve. The pulmonary artery then
carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
BLOOD FLOW

1 - THE LEFT SIDE

Oxygenated blood leaves the lungs via the
pulmonary vein, which pumps the blood into the
left atrium.
BLOOD FLOW

2 - THE LEFT SIDE

The blood leaves the left atrium and passes
through the mitral valve into the left ventricle.
BLOOD FLOW

3 - THE LEFT SIDE

The blood is pumped from the left ventricle,
through the aortic valve and into the aorta.
From the aorta, the blood is pumped around the
rest of the body.

CIRCULATORY & LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

lymphatic system- a
subsystem of the circulatory
system in the vertebrate body
that consists of a complex
network of vessels, tissues,
and organs. The lymphatic
system helps maintain fluid
balance in the body by
collecting excess fluid and
particulate matter from
tissues and depositing them
in the bloodstream.
THE BLOOD

RBC -carry oxygen to the body cells

WBC -battles infection by attacking

bacteria or foreign particles that
enter the body

Platelets -assist the blood clotting process

called coagulation

THE BLOOD

Plasma is the liquid component of blood,

in which the red blood cells, white blood
cells, and platelets are suspended. It
constitutes more than half of the
blood's volume and consists mostly of
water that contains dissolved salts
(electrolytes) and proteins.

1. What are the common ailments of the circulatory system?

2. How do these ailments (cardiovascular diseases) be acquired
by an individual?

4. What are symptoms for every ailment?
5. How to prevent these ailments?

THE MECHANISM OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The following are the general functions of the cardiovascular system:

Transport: The cardiovascular system not only transports oxygen to the cells of the body but
also removes carbon dioxide and other waste products of metabolism. It also transports
nutrients from the digestive system and hormones from the endocrine system to the cells of the
body.

Protection: The cardiovascular system transports the cells of the immune system. These cells,
and their associated antibodies and chemical signals, help protect the body from infection.

Regulation: The cardiovascular system participates in the homeostasis of a variety of the

body’s conditions, including temperature, pH balance, and water and electrolyte levels
THE MECHANISM OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

The systemic circulation provides organs, tissues, and cells with blood so that
they get oxygen and other vital substances.

The pulmonary circulation is where the fresh oxygen we breathe in enters the
blood. At the same time, carbon dioxide is released from the blood.
QUESTIONS:
Why do arteries need to have thicker walls than veins and capillaries?

pressure since the heart
pumps blood throughout the
body directly through them.
