lesson. This aims to help you discover and
understand new concepts and skills.
What's New
This module will introduce you to the importance of Data Collection Activity. Have fun
while learning from this module so that after completing this, you would be able to:
Energized
Story Time!
3. What are the Chinese zodiacs that belongs to the first half?
Are you ready? You are tasked to answer the following questions before we
proceed with our lesson. Do not worry, we only want to know how knowledgeable you
are with the topics that we will be discussing in this module.
DIRECTION: Read and answer each item carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer
on a separate sheet of paper.

B. seventh decile
C. second quartile
D. None of the above.
A. Median
B. Decile

C. 22
D. 23
For numbers 6 to 10, refer to the table below.
A group of Grade 10 students were asked to write down all the Philippine National
Heroes that they know in 5 minutes. The following distribution contains the number of
heroes they were able to recall in 5 minutes. The Class Intervals contain the numbers of
heroes the students were able to recall. The Frequency is the number of students.
6. How may Grade 10 students were asked to recall our Philippine National Heroes?
A) 13
B) 15
C) 30

Activity 1
Follow the steps to find the different quartile values.
Eleven students recorded the number of laps of swimming they were able to do in a
twenty-five-meter pool. Below is the number of laps they did.
6, 8, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 6, 1, 9, 7
What Is It
If the data are arranged in ascending order, the second quartile, 𝑄 2, is the median
of the data set. This means that 50% of the numbers in the data set lie below 𝑄 2.
The first quartile, 𝑄 1 is the median of the lower half of the data set. This means
that 25% of the numbers in the data set lie below 𝑄 1.
The third quartile, 𝑄 3 is the median of the upper half of the data set. This means
that 75% of the numbers in the data set lie below 𝑄 3.
The quartiles can be interpreted in several ways. For 𝑄 1, we can claim that the pig,
dog, and rooster belong to the 25% of the group that arrived latest in the group. The pig,
dog, rooster, monkey, sheep, horse, snake, dragon, and rabbit belong to the 75% group
that arrived later than the rest of the group.
Since 𝑄 2 is equal to the median, the steps in finding for the median of the data set
is the same. To find 𝑄 1, we get the median of the lower half. To find 𝑄 3, we get the
median of the upper half. This is called the Tukey’s Method.
Examples:
Averina, a shoe store owner, wanted to compare the different brands of shoes. The
table below shows her record of the number of pairs of shoes bought from each of the
brands in one week. Find 𝑄 1, 𝑄 2, 𝑄 3.
Interpretation: In Q2, it means that 25% of the shoes lie below the brand E, while
50% of the shoes lie below the brand H and 75% of the shoes lie below brand G.
Another method of finding quartiles is the Mendenhall and Sincich Method. Given a
data set with n number of values, first, we arrange the data in ascending order. Next, we
find the position of 𝑄 1 ,L , in the data set:
Then round UP to the nearest integer. Finally, look for the value of the Lth value in
the data set.
To find the position of 𝑄 3, the U, in the data set use the formula:
Then round UP to the nearest integer. Then look for the value of the Uth value in the
data set.
How well did you answer Activity? Did you get the answers correctly? If not, no
worries! Just go over again our definition of independent and dependent events.
Example:
“A drawstring bag contains 14 red marbles and 12 blue marbles and 9 yellow marble.
The Quartile for Grouped Data
What Can I Do
In this part of the module, we will apply the concepts of solving word problems
involving quartile.
1.
2. Construct a Grouped Frequency Distribution of the data set. Below is the data set on
the number of push-ups performed by a group of students on the first day of the Push-
Up Challenge.
Calculate the following: Q2. Then, make a conclusion for the result.
Assessment
1. The following are the ages of 20 senior citizens with bachelor's degree.
60, 76, 85, 73, 60, 78, 80, 64, 64, 64, 71, 66, 77, 69, 80, 80, 81, 64, 90, 75
2. A group of grade 10 students took part in a sponsored race. The number of laps
completed is given in the table below.
1-5 2
6-10 9
11-15 15
16-20 20
21-25 17
26-30 25
31-35 2
36-40 1
