ZONING- to divide into or assign to zones in a hospital or operating room complex in

accordance to cleanliness or level of sterilization maintained which number of bacteria

decreases from the outer to the inner zones of the OT department.

So there are
Four zones can be described in an Operating Theater complex, wherein this are based on
varying degrees of cleanliness or level of sterilization maintained., in which ang bac-
teriological count progressively diminishes from the outer to the inner zones (operating
area) and is maintained by a differential decreasing positive pressure ventilation gradi-ent
from the inner zone to the outer zone.
The four zones are:

• Sterile Zone or Restricted Zone

• Clean Zone or unrestricted zone
• Protective Zone
• Disposal zone
Now let’s define and describe each zones and what are the inclusions of these specific
zones in the operating room complex.
First, we have
The sterile zone
The sterile zone consists of the Operating rooms and clean preparation areas. In this zone,
the highest level of aseptic conditions needs to be maintained. The ventilation system
helps maintain air pressure gradient, minimizing airflow from the corridor to the OR. So
this includes:
• Sterile preparation area
• Scrub station
• Gowning area
• Gloving area
• Operating Room attire is mandatory in this area
Clean zone
The clean zone consists of the store areas, preoperative/holding room, recovery room, or
PACU and OR staff rooms. It surrounds the sterile area and connects it to the protective
area. Only staff wearing appropriate surgical wear should enter the clean area.

• Connects protective zone to aseptic zone and has other areas also like
• Stores & cleaner room
• Equipment store room
• Maintenance workshop
• Kitchenette (pantry)
• Firefighting device room
• Emergency exits
• Service room for staff
• Close circuit TV control area
Protective Zone
includes dressing rooms, reception, and waiting areas. The zone surrounds the clean zone
and forms a protective area between the clean zone of the OR and the rest of the hospital.

• Change rooms for all medical and paramedical staff with conveniences
• Transfer bay for patient, material & equipments
• Rooms for administrative staff
• Stores & records
• Pre & post-operative rooms
• I.C.U. and P.A.C.U.
• Sterile stores
Disposal Zone
includes the decontamination rooms and disposal corridors. The soiled instrument uses
linen. Operating debris is removed via the disposal zone.
So this includes, Doffing of PPE kit, handling of used surgical instruments and biomedical
waste disposal takes place in this area. The articles which require sterilization will be
sent to the CSSD department.
______________________________
So, implementing zoning in a hospital specifically the OR complex is very essential
Benefits of dividing Operation Theatre into zones are:
1. Minimize the risk of nosocomial infections
2. Minimize unnecessary movement of staff and patients to prevent contamination
3. Increase the efficiency of the operations theatre team
4. Minimize the risk of operating room hazards
5. All the articles and equipments are placed in the appropriate zones to ensure a
smooth workflow within Operation Theatre.
