Advantages and Disadvantages of Total Patient Care Model

The total patient care delivery model is an intensive nursing care delivery system which happened to be
the oldest model of nursing care delivery. With the total patient care delivery model, one nurse provides
total nursing care to a patient during a shift.

Advantages:

1. Nurse-Patient relationships are built easily

With the total patient care delivery model, one nurse provides total nursing care to a patient
during a shift. Established rapport, strong bonds are formed between patient and the nurse.. The
nurse creates a personalized, whole person care plan. And relationships are built easily because
nurses provide one on one attention to each patient which is critical in maintaining a good
working relationship in order for total patient care to occur. Since the patient only interacts with
one nurse at a time, there’s a great deal of trust there.

2. It provides patient with continuous and holistic care

Total patient care model emphasizes the importance of providing comprehensive care. Nurse
takes responsibility of every aspect of patient’s care or needs like personal hygiene,
administering medication and of course emotional support. IT IS The provision of all of a
patient’s medical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs.

3. Clear responsibility and a clear shift schedule

Because the nurse work directly with the patient, family, physician, and other health care staff in
implementation a plan of care. The goal of this delivery system is to have one nurse give all care
to the same patient for the entire shift. Just one nurse takes care of all the needs for each
patient they’re assigned to until the end of their shift. When each member of the care team is
aware of the other members’ role and responsibilities, it helps to eliminate potential errors and
duplication of services.

4. Nurse gets to know what works and what doesn’t over time
Like I just mentioned, since the patient only interacts with one nurse at a time, the nurse gets to
know all the relevant information about the patient, and since total patient care tends to be
ongoing, they’ll get to know what works and what doesn’t over time.

Disadvantages:

1. When the nurse is inadequately trained or prepared to provide total care to the patients
Patients need properly trained nurses
SINCE THE NURSE GIVES ALL THE CARE, IKAW ANG BEDSIDE, MEDICATION AS WELL AS CHARGE
NURSE, YOU HAVE TO BE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND SKILLED TO PERFORM ALL THESE
RESPOSIBILITIES
2. High demand it places on the nurses
Nurses must interact with multiple groups of patients, BECAUSE NURSES ARE NOT ONLY
HANDLING 1 PATIENT PER SHIFT, THEY ARE DEALING OF NUMBER OF PATIENTS AND YOU ARE
DELIVERING A TOTAL NURSING CARE, they may be overwhelmed by the workload

3. The staff-to-patient ratio may affect the effectiveness of care

If the patient load gets too high, nurses can’t be as effective, and the total patient care model is
not ideal. May not be practical ESPECIALLY in a labor shortage.

The primary nursing care model has a significant impact on the role of nurses in patient
care. Here are some ways in which the primary nursing care model impacts the role of
nurses:
1. Increased responsibility: Under the primary nursing care model, a named nurse is
responsible for the patient's care throughout their hospital stay. This means that
nurses have increased responsibility for their patients' care
1
.
2. Improved knowledge of patients: The primary nursing care model allows nurses
to have excellent knowledge about patients and families, which can help them
plan and coordinate care from admission to discharge
2
.
3. Better management of health situations: With the primary nursing care model,
nurses can better manage health situations, which can lead to improved patient
outcomes
2
.
4. Improved patient outcomes: The primary nursing care model has been associated
with improved patient outcomes, including nursing-sensitive outcomes
2

5
.
5. Increased job satisfaction: Nurses who work under the primary nursing care
model have reported increased job satisfaction
4
.
6. Autonomy in the primary nurse role: The primary nursing care model allows for
autonomy in the primary nurse role, which can lead to improved patient
outcomes
3
.
Overall, the primary nursing care model can have a positive impact on the role of nurses
in patient care. It can lead to increased responsibility, improved knowledge of patients,
better management of health situations, improved patient outcomes, increased job
satisfaction, and autonomy in the primary nurse role.

throughout their hospital stay, developing an individualized care plan, improving
communication, and better coordinating care.

the primary nursing care model emphasizes continuity of care, individualized care
planning, and the relationship between the nurse and patient. On the other hand, the total
patient care model focuses on providing one-on-one care, personalized care plans, and a
high level of care overseen by a registered nurse. Both models aim to deliver patient-
centered care but differ in terms of the level of responsibility and the approach to care
delivery.
