Introduction:
Sleep is an essential aspect of human life that plays a crucial role in maintaining physical and mental
health. Adequate sleep duration is particularly important for students, as it impacts their cognitive
functioning and academic performance. Senior high school students, in particular, experience major
changes in their sleep patterns, which can significantly affect their academic outcomes. Despite the
importance of sleep for academic success, however, there is limited research specifically focused on the
impact of sleep duration on academic outcomes among senior high school students.
According to a study by Liu et al. (2021), sleep duration is associated with academic performance among
high school students. The study found that students who slept for 7-9 hours per night had better
academic performance scores than those who slept less than 7 hours or more than 9 hours. Similarly, a
study by Short et al. (2018) reported that students with adequate sleep duration had a higher
probability of achieving good academic performance.
Despite these findings, many senior high school students do not get enough sleep, and this can lead to
poor academic outcomes. The National Sleep Foundation recommends that teenagers between the ages
of 14 and 17 should get between 8-10 hours of sleep per night. However, a study by Yang et al. (2019)
revealed that a significant proportion of senior high school students get less than the recommended
amount of sleep, with an average sleep duration of around 6-7 hours per night. This discrepancy
between recommended and actual sleep duration raises concerns about the potential negative impact
on the academic performance of senior high school students.
Insufficient sleep can negatively affect cognitive processes essential for learning and academic
performance. Sleep deprivation has been associated with difficulties in attention, concentration,
memory, and problem-solving skills, all of which are crucial for academic success (Gruber et al., 2019).
Inadequate sleep can result in diminished cognitive abilities, decreased motivation, decreased learning
capacity, and impaired academic performance (Gupta et al., 2017).
The problem of inadequate sleep among senior high school students and its potential impact on it
performance warrants further investigation. Understanding the relationship between sleep duration and
academic outcomes among this particular age group is crucial for developing effective strategies and
interventions to promote healthy sleep habits and enhance academic success.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of sleep duration on the academic
performance of senior high school students. By examining the relationship between sleep duration and
academic performance, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the significance of sleep
duration for academic success among senior high school students. The study will use both quantitative
and qualitative research methods to collect data on sleep duration and academic performance. Using
statistical analysis, the study will determine if there is a significant correlation between sleep duration
and academic performance. Additionally, the study will explore the perspectives of senior high school
students on their sleep habits and the factors that contribute to inadequate sleep.
The findings of this study could have important implications for educators, policymakers, families, and
students themselves. If the study confirms the link between sleep duration and academic performance,
it could help promote the adoption of policies and practices aimed at promoting healthy sleep habits
among senior high school students. The study could also help inform the development of interventions
aimed at improving academic outcomes by targeting sleep-related factors.
