1.0 INTERNSHIP FOR THE FIVE-YEAR INTEGRATED LL.B. PROGRAMME
LL.B. internship training tries to provide a highly organised practical exposure to the aspiring graduates of
legal profession. This will definitely expose the students to different practical aspects of legal career in
courts, administrative offices, legislative secretariats, lawyer's chambers, quasi-judicial establishments,
police and correctional institutions, government law offices, legal aid centres, corporate establishments and
other acceptable institutions approved for internship by the University and Bar Council of India. Internship
enhances the capabilities of students the collection and assimilation of knowledge, sharpening analytical
skills, critical writing and soft skills. It equips the students to practice professional ethics and extend public
service initiatives in personal as well as professional life.
As per the Bar Council of India Rules on Legal Education, 2008 the following are the guidelines on
Internship - Each student shall have completed minimum of 20 weeks internship during the entire period
of legal studies under NGO, Trial and Appellate 2 Advocates, Judiciary, Legal Regulatory authorities,
Legislatures and Parliament, Other Legal Functionaries, Market Institutions, Law Firms, Companies, Local
Self Government and other such bodies where law is practiced either in action or in dispute resolution or in
management. Provided that internship in any year cannot be for a continuous period of more than Four
weeks and all students shall at least gone through once in the entire academic period with Trial and
Appellate Advocates. Each student shall keep internship diary and the same shall be evaluated by the Guide
in Internship and also a Core Faculty member. (Rule 26)
District-wise list of Senior Lawyers willing to guide students under internship: The State Bar Councils
shall be required to prepare a list of suggested Senior Advocates District-wise with at least ten years
experience who are willing to take under internship students during the vacation period. The Bar Council
of Rules of Legal Education, 2008 35 India shall then publish the list of senior lawyers willing to guide
students under internship in the web-site as well as make the list available with the Institutions. (Rule 26)
Formal Dress Code during internship: Students placed under internship or in moot court exercise shall
have formal dress of legal professional in pupilage as follows: (For all) White/Black trouser, white shirt,
black tie, black coat, black shoe and black socks. When students have problems of getting the entire formal
dress for any reason, they have to have a white trouser, full sleeve shirt to be tucked in and covered shoe.
(Optional for Girl students) Black printed sharee, with white full sleeve blouse and covered black shoe or
Lawyer's Suit with black covered shoe. The Organization or Advocate under whom the internee is placed
is required to follow suitable dress code. (Rule 27)
The 2020 syllabus of the University of Kerala for BA LLB students elaborates on internships as follows:
Internship- Each student shall have completed a minimum of 20 weeks internship during the entire period
of legal studies with NGOs, Trial and Appellate Advocates, Judiciary. Legal Regulatory Authorities,
Legislative Bodies, Bank, Stock Exchanges, Law firms, Companies, Local Self Govenment and such other
bodies. Provided that internship in any particular year should not exceed a continuous period of more than
four week and all students shall undergo internship at least once during the entire period of studies with trial
and appellate advocates. Each student shall keep an internship diary which shall be certified and evaluated
by the person or authority with whom the student has interned and the same shall be submitted to the Faculty
in charge for his evaluation. Each student shall keep internship diary and the same shall be evaluated by the
Guide in Internship and also a Core Faculty member.
The 2018 syllabus of the University of Kerala forBA LLBstudents elaborates that the following places can
be considered for internship and the nature of documents that they have to collect from the places of
internship:
Co-operative societies (ii) Police Station (ii) Local Government Institutions (iv) Quazi Judicial institutions
(v) Statutory commissions /Committees (vi) Industrial / labour institutions etc. Attendance certificates and
status report shall be recorded.
1.3 SCHEDULE FOR INTERNSHIPS
Students are required to undergo internship during summer holidays (minimum 4 weeks in one
summer holiday session). The students are required to complete the Court work and Chamber work
for internship during the summer holidays prior to the final semester/year in the course period.
14 INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
Internshipprogramme for the law students at GLCTare conducted based on the guidelines provided
by the Bar Council of India and the University of Kerala. Each student will be allotted a guide for
doing the internship. Guides for the internship are allotted to the students for a period of five years
throughout the course at GLCT. The guide provides necessary direction and guidance to the student
for choosing the organisation to do internship. obtaining the consent from the internship organisation
to do internship and also for the conduct of internship. The guide ensures that the student fulfils all
other necessary internship requirements appropriately as mentioned in the guidelines of the Bar
Council of India and University of Kerala and thereby receives the certificate of completion of
internship from the concerned organisation. The guide ensures that the internship diary is maintained
regularly and accurately by the student. The guide shall also maintain the necessary documentations
relating to the internship of the concerned students under their guidance appropriately.
The internship list and internship details of the students are to be maintained by the respective guides
for future reference and both a hard and soft copy of the details shall be given in an organised
manner, to the concerned class teacher at the end of every semester. Accordingly, the class teacher
shall maintain the student internship list of their concerned batch and both a hard and soft copy of
the same shall be submitted to the faculty in charge of the Centre for Internship and Placement at
the end of every semester without fail. The complete details of the internship programme thus
received shall be documented and kept as a record by the Centre for Internship and Placement for
future reference.
