Assignment – EVS – HU 204

(Submit on or before 12th June 2024)

1. Write a short note on the components of the ecosystem. 4

2. What is Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). 3
Hint : Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a process used to evaluate the
environmental effects of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-
related socio-economic, cultural, and human-health impacts, both beneficial and
adverse. The primary goal of an EIA is to ensure that decision-makers consider
environmental impacts before approving a project.
Here are the key aspects of an EIA:
Purpose and Objectives:
To predict environmental impacts at an early stage in project planning and design.
To find ways to reduce adverse impacts.
To shape projects to suit the local environment.
To present the predictions and options to decision-makers.
3. Write a short note on Acid Rain 5
4. What do you mean by Eutrophication? Explain in details. 4
5. Describe 4R principle with daily life examples. 4
6. Write a short not on Composting 4
7. Calculate the intensity of 100 db Sound ( reference intensity 10-12 w/m2). 4
8. Differentiate Sulphurous and photochemical smog 4
9. Describe the 5 days BOD test 5
10.Describe the Incineration & Land filling process for solid waste disposal. 5
11.Write a short note on Hazardous solid waste management 5
12.Write a short note on Green house effect, global warming 5
13.Explain the causes and effects of Ozone layer depletion.
14.The BOD5 of a sample of waste water is 325mg/l. The initial amount of DO is 20mg/l
and the test requires a decrease in DO at-least 4mg/l with at-least 3mg/l of DO is
remaining at the end of the 5 days. Now calculate the range of dilution factor. 3
Hint : BOD5 = (DOi- DOf) / P
15.In a 5 days test, the DO level drops by 1mg/l of seeded distilled water. A 300 ml of
BOD bottle filled with 21ml of waste water and the rest with seeded distilled water,
shows a drop of 6mg/l DO in the same period. Calculate the BOD5 of the waste. 4

(𝐷𝑂𝑖−𝐷𝑂𝑓)−(𝐵𝑖−𝐵𝑓)(1−𝑃)
Hint : BOD5 = = [6-1(1-21/300)) / (21/300)] mg/lit
𝑃

= 85.3mg/l
16.Differentiate BOD and COD 3
17.Write a short note on Resources 3
18. Describe surface water treatment in brief along with schematic diagram 4
Steps in Surface Water Treatment:
Intake: Water is drawn from the surface water source through an intake structure that screens out large debris like sticks,
leaves, and trash.
Coagulation: Chemicals (coagulants) are added to the water to destabilize and aggregate smaller particles into larger
particles called flocs. Common coagulants include aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride.
Flocculation: The water is slowly mixed in flocculation basins to encourage the formation of larger flocs from the smaller
particles.
Sedimentation: The water flows into sedimentation basins where the flocs settle to the bottom by gravity. This process
removes a significant portion of the suspended solids.
Filtration: The water passes through filters made of sand, gravel, and sometimes activated carbon. These filters remove
smaller particles that did not settle during sedimentation.
Disinfection: To kill any remaining pathogens, disinfectants such as chlorine, chloramine, or UV light are added to the
water. This step ensures the water is safe to drink.
Storage: The treated water is stored in reservoirs or tanks before it is distributed to consumers.
Distribution: The treated water is pumped through a network of pipes to homes, businesses, and other end users.

19.Write a short note on Pond and Grassland eco system. 5

20.What is Aquifers ? 3
21.Explain why hard water cannot be used in the boiler. 2
22.Proof the final expression of Exponential growth model 3
23.The increase in population from 1 million to 10 million took 200 years. For
exponential growth at constant rate , find out the growth rate(in percentage) 4
24.Classify noise & mention two major effects of noise pollution 4
25.What are the differences between food chain & food web 3
26.Justify the positive impact of green house gases on the earth’s surface. 3
27.A work area is composed of 95 dB sound level for 1 hr., 80 dB for 3hrs and 75 dB for
4hrs. Maximum permissible limits for 95 dB is 2 hrs per day, for 80 db is 16 hrs per day
and infinite time for 75 dB. Predict whether the work area is suitable for health or not.5
28.A 10 mL of sewage water mixed with enough water to fill a 300 mL bottle has an initial
DO of 9.0 mg/L. To help assure an accurate test, it is desirable to have at least a 2.0
mg/L drop in DO during the five day run, and the final DO should be at least 2.0 mg/L.
For what range of BOD5 would this dilution produce the desired result?
29.What are the essential characteristics of hazardous waste? 5
30.What do you mean by integrated solid waste management? Explain with the flow chart
diagram. 5
31.Describe the characteristics of musical sound. What are the differences of musical sound
and noise? 5
32.Write a short note on characteristics of Logistic Growth Model plots 5
33.Write a short note on Handling and disposal of hazardous wastes 5
34.A water sample on analysis was found to contain Mg(HCO3)2 = 7.5ppm. Calculate the
total hardness. Mol. Wt. Mg(HCO3)2 = 146 5
1000 ml of 1N Mg(HCO3)2 soln.≡ 50 g of CaCO3
73gm of Mg(HCO3)2 ≡ 50 g of CaCO3
7.5 mg Mg(HCO3)2 ≡ 5.14mg of CaCO3
Hardness due to presence of Mg(HCO3)2 = 5.14ppm
