1 Introduction
1.1 Borehole surveying
This user manual is a guide to the successful operation of your survey tool. The
user manual contains important information which is necessary for understanding
the operation principle, the characteristics and applications of use for your borehole
survey tool.
Borehole surveying is the measurement of a boreholes direction and inclination
under the surface to be able to calculate the boreholes trajectory. Boreholes can de-
viate considerably from the original plan, depending on factors like rock formations,
drilling parameters and length of the borehole.

Devico survey tools

Devico is producing survey tools that cover most applications for diamond core
drilling, including magnetic and non-magnetic survey tools. The survey tools are
easy to use and rugged electronic multishot survey tools.

DeviFlex
The DeviFlex is a non-magnetic borehole survey tool that is used inside the
drill string. The survey tool is not affected by magnetic disturbance and can
be used in all types of rock formations, in cased boreholes and in boreholes
adjecent to steel or other objects that locally alter the earth’s magnetic field.

The other survey tools Devico can offer are:

PeeWee
The PeeWee is a magnetic multishot survey tool ment for surveying in front
of the drill bit or in open holes. The survey tool is the most used survey tool
in rock formations where there is no magnetic disturbance.
DeviCore
The DeviCore is an electronic core orientation system for accurate orientation
of rock cores. The core orientation system has minimal impact on drilling time
and drilling procedures.

We are happy that you have purchased a Devico survey tool and we hope you will
be satisfied with the use and results you’ll get from it. All Devicos borehole survey
tools are using the same software, so the learning curve when changing from one sys-
tem to another is minimal. If you have any trouble, please do not hesitate to contact
the Devico support team! We can be contacted by e-mail at [email protected].

2 The DeviFlex kit

2.1 Overview
The DeviFlex kit consists of two main parts, the survey tool itself and a PDA that
is used to operate and present the borehole survey data. To start and stop the

5
DeviFlex survey tool, you connect the PDA and DeviFlex with the communication-
cable. The software program DeviSoft.Mobile should automatically detect that it is
connected to the survey tool and you are ready to start your survey.

2.2 The survey tool

The DeviFlex survey tool consist of a front shock absorber, a front extension rod,
a rear extension rod and a pumping unit with spear head. Depending on borehole
dimension, the DeviFlex also needs three centralizers.
The DeviFlex is a non-magnetic multishot survey tool. The electronic unit con-
sists strain gages, tri-axis accelerometer and a temperature sensor. They measure
the boreholes curvature and inclination, along with the tools internal temperature.
The sensor data obtained during a survey is stored in the internal memory of the
tool and can be downloaded when the tool is connected to the PDA.
The DeviFlex is designed to protect for water pressure up to 300 bars and it is
calibrated to be used in temperature between -5◦ C and 65◦ C.

2.3 PDA
The PDA that is used to operate the survey tool is Trimble Nomad. It is IP67 rated
and is impervious for water and dust. It has a rugged casing and runs Windows
Mobile 6.5. The PDA has DeviSoft.Mobile installed when it is shipped from Devico.
DeviSoft.Mobile will be explained in more details in section 4.2. More info about
the Nomad is available on Trimbles homepage: www.trimble.com

2.4 Battery
The DeviFlex is powered with a internal battery pack. The DeviFlex can run 400
hours continuously before the batteries need to be recharged. It is charged through
the communication port with the charger unit. The charger will go into trickle mode
when the battery is full, so it is recommended to charge the DeviFlex if you are not
sure how much battery that is left.
The voltage should be minimum 7,2 V when you start the survey. The voltage
can be checked with the Online menu on the PDA.

6
Figure 1: Overview of the DeviFlex survey tool
7
2.5 USB-modem
The USB-modem is used to connect and transfer the signals between the survey tool
and the PDA. The USB-modem unit consists of a type A USB-cable, a communi-
cation adapter for the survey tool and a serial to USB signal converter.

You should not restart the PDA with the USB modem connected. If you do so,
you will be asked to type in the drivers name which is ”ftdi ser.dll”, or alternatively
restart the PDA again without the USB-modem connected.

2.6 DeviSoft.Mobile
DeviSoft.Mobile is preinstalled on the PDA. If you for some reason need to reinstall
the program, all the necessary files can be found on the memory stick. The memory
stick does also have the installation files for DeviSoft PC software.

You should also from time to time have a look at Devicos webpages to see if
there are updated versions of DeviSoft.Mobile.

Reinstallation procedure:
Close the DeviSoft.Mobile program on the PDA. Go to Start → Settings →
System → Remove Programs and uninstall DeviSoft.Mobile.
Go to Start → Programs → File Explorer → Program Files → Devi-
Soft.Mobile → Data and delete or remove the files in this folder.
Connect the PDA to the computer with the USB cable and open the Devi-
Soft.Mobile installation file. Follow the instructions on the screen.

3 Borehole surveying technique
3.1 Overview
There are several techniques to measure the deviation of boreholes, and what pro-
cedure that is best for you depends on what sort of borehole you have.
In general we want for all boreholes to place the survey tool at a given depth,
called a survey station. At that survey station we want to take a measurement,
often called a survey shoot, to get the curvature and inclination. The curvature and
inclination, together with the depth is used to calculate the borehole trajectory.
In the next sections, different types of boreholes have been described with rec-
ommended techniques of surveying.

3.2 Inclined and horizontal boreholes

Inclined and horizontal boreholes are surveyed by pumping down the DeviFlex until
it lands at the landing ring or at the back of the innertube. Remember to attach
the overshot unit to the DeviFlex before you start to pump down the tool if you are
using a pump-in type of the overshot because the DeviFlex pumping unit will not
let the water pass unless the spear head is pulled up. The DeviFlex should be pulled
out 4 by 4 meter with the wire, and the drill string should be rotated 90 degree pr
survey station.

3.3 Vertical boreholes

For information about DeviFlex surveys in vertical boreholes, please download the
user manual from www.devico.com.

3.4 Upward boreholes

For slightly upward boreholes it is recommended to fasten the DeviFlex in the bot-
tom of the drill string with the DeviFlex vertical sighter. The vertical sighter is
replacing the normal pumping gasket. With the vertical sighter the DeviFlex is
fastened in the drill string and you can run the DeviFlex into the borehole with the
drill rods. Please be aware that water pressure might push the DeviFlex out of the
drill string, so stay away from any dangerous position.

9
For steeper boreholes, a solution is to modify the front shock absorber on the
DeviFlex. Take off the bull nose (but not shock absorber spring) and instead put
a head assembly with latching unit and landing ring in front. When the DeviFlex
is pumped in it latches in the core barrel, and the borehole can safely be surveyed
while pulling out the rods. Devico does not offer the equipment necessary to do this.

4 Operation of the survey tool

4.1 Preparation before a survey
Before you go out in the field to do a survey, test the survey tool. Do a dummy
survey so you know that the survey tool is working. Make sure that the PDA is
fully charged, that the DeviFlex is fully charged and that the O-rings and threads
are greased and clean.

4.2 Start the survey

Connect the PDA to the survey tool with the communication-cable. The connection
port for the com. cable is under the sleeve at the top of the DeviFlex.
When you turn the PDA on, you should see the program DeviSoft.Mobile di-
rectly. If you do not see the program, go to Windows Start menu → Devi-
Soft.Mobile and open the program.
When the program is open, the header should show that the PDA is connected
to the DeviFlex tool. If not, the header will tell you ”No tool connected”. If you are
not able to get contact with the survey tool, please see the Trouble shooting section
(6.1) in this user guide on how to solve this problem.

10
To start a survey, press the Survey button. In this window you can choose:
Survey name
The hole name will come up as the same hole name as you used last time. The
name can be changed by pressing the button next to the text field and type
in a new name.
Start delay
If you choose delayed start, the survey tool will start running, but it will not
start to log any stations before the delayed start time has passed. This option
can be used in situation where it will take some time before the survey tool is
at the right place, i.e. you have a long horizontal borehole where the pump-in
time is noticeable.
Time interval
The survey interval decides how often the survey tool is taking a reading. The
maximum survey time will depend on the survey interval time. Survey interval
time of 5 sec will give 2 hours and 40 minutes effective survey time. Survey
interval time of 30 seconds will give you a survey time of 16 hours.
Oriented rods
Oriented rods is used under special circumstances when you want to measure
vertical boreholes with magnetic disturbance, i.e. short boreholes with casing.
The 0-toolface mark has to be aimed against a known direction, and the survey
tool must be lowered down in the borehole with special rods to avoid rotation.
Press the Start button and the survey tool and the PDA is getting synchronized.
After a few seconds, a message will tell you that it is safe to disconnect the survey
tool from the PDA. Close the protection sleeve before you put the DeviFlex in the
borehole. See section 3 for different ways of setting up the survey tool.

11
4.3 During the survey
When the survey tool has synchronized with the PDA, a message box appears on
the screen. It is now safe to disconnect the survey tool from the PDA. Confirm by
pressing OK.
You choose the correct Start depth by tapping the Depth button. Any Start
depth bigger than the Interval will change the survey direction to Out. Survey
direction can be changed in the survey Menu.
The DeviFlex can use survey interval from 1 meter to maximum 4 meter. You
change survey interval by tapping the Interval button.

During the survey, press Mark when the survey tool is exactly at the position
you want to measure. The Mark button will change from red to green. If you press
mark at the wrong place, press Menu and Undo the last survey station.
The DeviFlex must be rotated approximately 90 degree pr station to get optimal
results.
When you have finished the survey, press Stop.

4.4 Download the survey data

When you are finished with the borehole survey, press Stop and pull out the survey
tool. Connect the PDA to the survey tool with the com. cable. Wait until you see
that the survey tool has connected. The ”Load” button will change from disabled
to enabled when it connects. Press Load and wait until the downloading process
has finished.
All the marked survey stations will be transferred to DeviSoft.Mobile. The sur-
vey depth from the PDA will be combined with the appropriate readings from the
DeviFlex, and based on those data, the borehole trajectory will be calculated.

12
4.5 What are the results telling me?
In the result window, you will find several columns with different headers. You can
scroll sideways by using the sideways scrollbar, and up or down by using the vertical
scrollbar.

Depth
The depth value should correspond with the depth of the top of the DeviFlex

13
when you pressed the mark button. The depth should be as accurate as
possible. On how to actually measure the depth, see section 3.1.
Azimuth
Azimuth is measured by strain gouges inside the DeviFlex. The strain gouges
are measuring the bend of the survey tool, which, when the DeviFlex is cen-
tralized inside the drill string, gives the curvature of the borehole. For each
survey station, the DeviFlex will add a curvature to the right or to the left
when the mark button is pressed. When the survey is finish it will calculate
the full trajectory based on all the curvature measurments. If no start direc-
tion is given, it will assume that the borehole starts towards North (Azimuth
0◦ ).
Inclination
Inclination is the angle between the horizontal plane and the direction of the
survey tool. Devico survey tools are using +90◦ as vertical up, 0◦ is horizontal
and -90◦ is vertical down.
Sum.Inclination
The sum.inc. is the inclination calculated from the strain gauges. The first
sum.inclination will always be the same as the Inclination, but then it will
change according to the values from the strain gauges, and not the accelerom-
eters. The sum. inc. is used as a quality parameter for the azimuth. A good
survey will have inclination values and sum.inc values that is close to each
other.
Northing, Easting and Elevation
Northing, easting and elevation is the coordinates of the borehole and is cal-
culated from the depth, azimuth and inclination values. DeviSoft.Mobile is
using a minimum curvature method to calculate the coordinates. To get the
actual borehole trajectory, collar coordinates need to be typed in, see section
4.7.
Gravity Toolface
The gravity toolface value tells you which way the survey tools high side/low
side was facing in the borehole. If the gravity toolface is 0◦ , it means that
the black dot in the front of the survey tool is pointing upwards. The gravity
toolface has a range from 0◦ to 360◦ . A survey tool that is in an absolute
vertical borehole will not have any high side/low side, which means the gravity
toolface will be arbitrary.
Gravity vector
Gravity vector refers to the gravity of the earth, and is approximately 9,81
m/s2 . This value can be used to check if the survey tool was moved when
the survey station was measured. If the survey tool was accelerated in any
direction during the shot, this value will differ from 9,81 m/s2 and you should
consider if you can trust all the values for this station.
Battery
It shows the voltage of the battery at the time when the survey shot was taken.

14
Temperature
It shows the survey tools internal temperature at the time when the survey
shot was taken.

4.6 Quality control

A automatic quality control can be used to check if the gravity vector is within
accepted limits. All survey stations that are marked with green have been accepted,
and all survey stations that are coloured red have one or more parameters outside
the set limits.
The quality control can be toggled in/off by pressing the Quality button, and
check / uncheck the Grav.vec check box. The default settings can be changed in the
Main menu by going to Utility → Quality Control.

4.7 Start coordinates and start coordinates

Collar coordinates or start coordinates are needed to calculate the correct borehole
trajectory. In open air, the start coordinates can be found using a accurate GPS.
Inside mines and tunnels, land surveying equipment is needed to find the start coor-
dinates of the borehole. The start coordinates should be three numbers telling you
the Northing, Easting and Elevation of the collar of the borehole and the numbers
must be given in either meter or feet in the coordinate system you are working in.
The DeviFlex does not give the start direction of the borehole. A start direction
can be found by using land surveying equipment at the surface, or use a known
direction down in the borehole and back calculate that direction with the help of
the DeviFlex survey up to the surface. A known azimuth is necessary to calculate
correct borehole coordinates.

15
Collar info
Under Collar Info you have the possibility to add information about start
direction and collar coordinates for the borehole. When you press save, De-
viSoft.Mobile will use the values you have entered to calculate the borehole
trajectory you see in the result window.

4.8 Export survey data

To create a survey report, you can use the Export button. This will give you the
possibility to export the survey results to several file formats, where the Word-file
and the PDF-file are the most readable formats. Unless you change it, the file will
be stored with the name you gave it when you started the survey. The file will be
stored on the PDA memory. You have the possibility to change the name, as well
as change the storage directory.
If you choose text file the survey results will be saved as a plain text document
that should be easy to import in almost every system.
Devico has a program called DeviSoft that can import survey data from the PDA.
This program has a few more options, i.e. for changing depths and deleting stations,
and merging surveys together if that is needed. The program can be downloaded
from www.devico.no.
Well done so far! Please read the next section as well, so you can keep the
DeviFlex survey tool in good working conditions for a long time.

4.9 Change settings

To change from meter to feet or opposite - go to Utility → Units and change from
meter to feet there.

16
To change from Celsius to Fahrenheit - go to Utility → Units and change from
meter to feet there.
To change program language, close the program and go to Windows Start Menu
→ Settings → System → Regional settings and choose country. Currently
supported languages are English, French, Spanish, Turkish, Norwegian and Swedish.

5 DeviFlex assembling and maintenance

5.1 Overview
Your DeviFlex survey tool is a highly accurate deviation measurement instrument,
and it should be threated thereafter. In any case where you discover unexpected
results or product malfunction, you should look in this user manual, contact your
nearest Devico distributor for advice or ship the survey tool back to Devico AS for
maintenance.

Before each survey run

• Check that the PDA has enough battery capacity.

• Check that the survey tool has enough battery capacity.
• Check that the wheels are rolling easily.
• Check that the spring loaded centralizer house moves easily.

After each survey run

• Check that all O-rings are in good shape and put some grease on them.

17
• Check that the threads are in good shape, and not broken to avoid water
leakage into the tool.
• Check that there is no physical damage to the survey tool housing.

From time to time

• Charge the battery.

• Clean the communication port and cables if they are getting dirty.
• Do a quick calibration check, see section 5.6

Annually

• Send the tool back to your Devico distributor for a recalibration.

When your DeviFlex survey tool is not in use, it must be stored in a dry and
temperated environment away from direct sunlight.

5.2 DeviFlex assembling

Extension rods
Connect the front extension rod to the rear extension rod. Tight the extension
rods until the two dots are aligned. Use only the wrench found in the kit, and
grip the front extension rod in the designated area that is marked. Use a
spanner in the centralizer area for the rear extension rod.

Front shock absorber

Assemble the front shock absorber to the front extension rod. Check that the
landing ring is the right size for your drill rod setup. If not, see section 5.4,
on how to change it.

18
Pumping gasket
Assemble the pumping unit to the rear extension rod. Check that the pumping
seal is the right size for your drill rod setup. If not, see section 5.5, on how to
change it.

If it is limited space for running the DeviFlex down in the hole, it is a possibility
to first assemble the shock absorber to the front extension rod, then the pumping
unit to the rear extension rod. The front unit can be partly run down the drill rods
before you assemble the rear unit to it.

5.3 Centralizers
The DeviFlex has three centralizers. Each centralizer consists of a centralizer sleeve,
a damper unit and three wheels. Two of the wheels are mounted directly on the
centralizer sleeve, whilst the third wheel is mounted on the damper unit. The
damper is fixed to the centralizer by two bolts and is spring loaded to keep the
wheels pressed towards the inside of the drill rods or casing. Both the centralizer
sleeve and the centralizer wheels are changeable in order to fit to different inside
diameters.
The front centralizer and rear centralizer have green springs. The middle cen-
tralizer has blue springs.

Important

• The wheels should rotate easily

• The spring loaded centralizer house should move easily.

The wheels should be replaced if their outer diameter has changed. The springs
should be replaced if they are not pressing the wheels tight to the drill string.
After use the centralizers should be cleaned with water to remove mud and dust.
To change the spring loaded wheel, unscrew the two allen screws on the spring
loaded wheel container. Remove the wheel shaft and replace the wheel. A thin layer
of bearing grease should be added to the wheel shaft.

19
To change the fixed wheels, unscrew the allen screw. Remove the wheel shaft
using a 2mm allen key. Add some bearing grease on wheel shaft and assemble the
wheel.

5.4 Shock absorber

The bull nose and the landing ring form the front part of the DeviFlex. The bull
nose leads the tool while running in hole. The landing ring sets the instrument
to the landing shoulder of the wireline core barrel and avoids the instrument from
entering the core barrel.
The shock absorber minimizes the landing shock and movement shocks during a
survey run. It protects the tool from mechanical deformations and the electronics
from high dynamic loads when the DeviFlex lands on the landing shoulder. The bull
nose, the landing ring and shock absorber are forming a whole unit when mobilizing
or demobilizing the surveying tool.

20
Remember
To check that the landing ring is stopping in the landing shoulder of the drill
rig.

5.5 Spearhead and pumping gasket

The pumping gasket and the spearhead are mounted at the rear centralizer of the
survey tool. The pumping gasket gets the DeviFlex to the bottom of the hole by
pumping the tool in the drill string. It contains a changeable rubber packing element
that must be in accordance with the size of the drill rods.

21
5.6 Recalibration / Calibration check
Devico recommends an annual calibration control of the DeviFlex in Devicos cali-
bration facilities with normal use.
The recalibration interval is usually set by the quality assurance program in the
companies that own the instruments. The interval should be based on the use of
the instrument. The more the instrument is used and the rougher treatment it gets
the shorter calibration interval. If the DeviFlex has been subject to an especially
hard landing or other accidents, a immediate calibration control is recommended.

We recommend that you do a quick check of the calibration from time to time,
to verify that the DeviFlex survey tool is performing to the specifications. There is
one simple check that can be done.

Inclination check
When you are checking the inclination, it is best to start with an online-check.
Connect the PDA to the survey tool, press Utility→Online. Move the survey
tool to vertical position, 45◦ position, and horizontal position and make sure
the inclination arrow at the PDA screen follows your movement.

To check the calibration of the DeviFlex survey tool in more detail, put the survey
tool in a frame, take a measurement (Incl1), rotate the survey tool 180◦ around,
and take a new measurement (Incl2). The absolute value of the two inclination
measurement should be almost the same, that means only the plus/minus sign should
be different from each other. The difference of the absolute values should be equal
or less than the tool specifications.

6 Trouble shooting
6.1 Survey tool not connecting
If the the PDA does not connect to the PDA check that the PDA is using serial
communication. Go to Utility → Communication and make sure the connection
type is set to Serial. If not, choose Serial and press Connect.
Make sure the batteries both on the survey tool and in the PDA has enough
power. Check section 2.4 on how to change batteries and measure the voltage of the
batteries.
Check that all your cables are without damage, and that all connection points
are clean and free from mud and dust. This is especially important for the DeviFlex
com.port and the com adapter.
Try to reboot the PDA. Take a look in section 2.3 about the PDA and read how
you can reboot the PDA, section 6.3.

6.2 Inaccurate results
If you suspect that the survey results you have are inaccurate or wrong, you should
first check the gravity vector for variation over the depth. Gravity variation above
an average value ± 0.03 indicate movement of the tool inn the borehole and will
contribute to inaccurate results. The solution is to wait longer before you press the
Mark button, so that you are sure the survey tool will stabilize in the borehole.
If the results are totally wrong, you should do a calibration check, see section
5.6. If you are getting a negative answer to that test, the survey tool should be sent
back to your nearest distributor for a more detailed check.

6.3 PDA error messages

DeviSoft.Mobile has different error messages.

Cannot open project. Old version.

The DeviSoft.Mobile version you have has been updated, but there are still
some old files in the data folder that contains data files. You should close
the DeviSoft.Mobile program and open Start → File Explorer. Go to My
Device → Program Files → DeviSoft.Mobile → Data. You can delete
or copy the files here to another folder.

Communication error
This error is most likely because of a synchronizing error with the storage card.
Go to Storage Card → DeviSoft.Mobile → Data and delete or copy the
files here to another folder.

Casting exception
This error is most likely because some erroneous data has been transferred
from the survey tool to the PDA. Try to move the cable and clean the com-
munication port, and repeat what you were doing.

The stop command did not get a well formed response

The communication between the PDA and survey tool is not as good as it
should be. Try to move the cable and clean the communication port, and
repeat the procedure you were doing.

To reset the PDA, hold down the on/off button for 5 seconds. Make sure you
have pulled out the USB-cable if you need to restart the system. If the system is
totally frozen, you can also take out the batteries for 2 minutes. This will turn the
PDA off.
