1. Course Description

Consequent to the development of urbanization as a global mega trend and emerging phenomenon in the
developing world, it is adequate worth for development specialists to acquaint with the sciences of urban
and regional development planning. Development has also spatial dimension and they also need to have
an insight about spatial perspectives of it.

This course is organized in to two main parts. The first part introduces the basis of urban and regional
issues. In this section the basic concepts of urban and regional development, history and theories of
urbanization, urban and regional planning, and spatial structures will be discussed. The second part the
policy strategies and models related to urban and regional planning. it also attempts to review the
Ethiopian urban development policy and existing realities with the perspectives of theoretical models.

2. Learning Objectives

The course aims at expose students to the state of the art of urban/regional growth and development. Thus
the students will be able to,

 know the basic concepts and definitions of urban and regional development planning.
 describe, analyze and explain development process at regional and local levels.
 conceptualize spatial structures and their organizations.
 acquaint with pioneers and their works of urban and regional planning.
 introduce with local and regional development theories and models.
 assess and analyze the Ethiopian urban development policy.

3. Teaching Methods

Lectures, supporting selected readings, presentations and discussions of the readings and cases,
assignments and seminars on assignments will be used in the process.

4. Methods of Assessment, Attendance and Participation
Performance of participants will be assessed on the basis of assignments, essay and an exam.

Attendance and Participation 10% throughout

Quiz/Mid exam 15%

Term paper (Individual) 15%

Final Exam 60%

You are expected to show up in class on time and to participate in class discussions.
