Subject : Additional Mathematics

Chapter : Sets
Subtopic : i ) Intersections of Sets
ii ) Union of Sets
iii ) Venn Diagrams
iv ) Problem Solving

(I) Intersections of Sets

Fact: The intersection of sets A and B, written as set A  B, is the set of elements which are
common to both sets A and B.

Example :
Find the intersection of each of the following pairs of sets.

P ={ integers between 2 and 6 }, Q ={ factors of 12 }

Exercise:

1. Given that x = { all letters in the english alphabets },

A={ h,i,s,t,o,r,y} and B={e,n,g,l,i,s,h }

List the elements of A  B. Hence , determine n(A  B).

[{i,s,h} ; 3]

1
(II) Union of Sets

Fact : The union of sets A and B, written as set A È B, is the set of all the elements belonging
to either of the sets.

Example :
Given that the

x = { 1, 2, 3, …, 9 },
A = { 2, 3, 4, 5 },
B = { 4, 5, 6, 7 } and
C = { 3, 5, 6, 9 }.

Determine each of the following sets

a) A È B
b) B È C
c) A È B È C

Exercises :

1. Determine the union of each of the following pairs of sets.

(a) P = {3,5,6} ; Q = {3,6,9} (b) A={multiples of 3 less than 15} ;
B={ odd number between 2 and 8}

[(a){3,5, 6,9} (b){3,5,6,7,9, 12}]

2
(III) Venn Diagram

Fact: The closed geometrical shapes that are used to represent set are called Venn diagrams.

Examples:
Shade the region in the following Venn diagrams which represents the intersection of the given
sets.

(a) A’  B (b) A  B ’

 

(c) A  B’

Exercises

1. In the Venn Diagram, shade (P  Q) R’.

P Q

2. In the Venn Diagram, shade A È (B  C).

3
A
3. In the Venn Diagram, shade C È (A  B’).

1. 2. 3.

B C

4. Given that the universal set  = { x : 30 < x < 42, x is an integer },

M = { x : x is a number in which the unit digit is greater than the tens digit } and
N = { x : x is a prime number },
(a) list the elements of the following sets.
(i) M =

(ii) N =

(iii) M  N =

(b) illustrate with a Venn diagram, the sets , M and N. Shade the set M  N.

4
5. The Venn Diagram below shows the universal set , set P, set Q, set R and Set S.

[a. {15} ; b. {11,23,28} c. {23,28} d. {11,12,13,15,19,20,21,22,25,27,29}

e. {12,13,15,19,20,21,22,25,27,29} f.{ 13, 15,20,22,25,27,29 } g.{11,23,25,28} h.{12,19,21}
i.{11,15,25}

5
6. The Venn diagram given shows the number of students who are members of Scouts Club (
P ), Taekwando ( T )and Dancing Club ( S ). The total number of students is 40. The number of
students who are member in Taekwando is 24.

(a) Find the value of x and y.

(b) Find the number of students who are member in one society only.
(c) Find the number of students who are member in Dancing Club.

[ (a) x=4, y =5 (b) 21 (C)19 ]

7. The diagram below shows a Venn diagram with the universal set  = {Year Five pupils}, set
M={Pupil who read a Malay language newspapers} and R={Pupils who read an English language
newspapers}. Given that n( M ) = 80, n( R ) = 104, n( M  R) = 12 and the number of pupils who
do not read either newspaper is 4, find the total number of Year Five pupils.

6
8. A and B are two sets and the number of elements in each set is shown in the Venn Diagram.
Given that n(A) = n(B), calculate

(a) the value of x

(b) n (A È B) and n(A  B’).

[a.8, b.51,24]

9. A, B and C are such that  = A È B È C. The Venn Diagram represents the number of elements
in each subsets.

(a) Given that n () = 50, find the value of x.

(b) Find n (B  C’) and n(A’  B).

(c) Find n( A B  C’)

[a.8 ; b.16,7 ; c.9]

7
10. In a community club, a group of 40 women take parts in at least one of the 3 activities:
cooking, singing and dancing. Given that

25 women who choose cooking, 8 also choose singing and dancing, 3 choose cooking only, 6
choose dancing but not singing. 15 women do not choose cooking, x choose both singing
dancing, 2x – 2 choose dancing, 5 choose only singing.

(a) Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate this information.

(b) Find the value of x.

(c) How many women choose cooking and singing but not dancing.

8
11. Each of a group of 20 students studies at least one of the 3 subjects Chemistry, Physics and
Biology. All those who studies physics also study Chemistry.

3 students study all 3 subjects

4 students study only Chemistry
8 students study Physics
14 students study Chemistry.

(a) Draw a Venn Diagram to illustrate this information.

(b) How many students study only Biology?

(c) How many students study Chemistry and Biology but not Physics?

9
12. People staying at a holiday hotel are able to take part in sailing, swimming and golf.

4 people take part in all 3 activities.

17 people take part in sailing and swimming but not golf.
21 people take part in swimming and golf but not sailing.
12 people take part in golf and sailing but not swimming.
42 people take part in sailing only.
X people take part in swimming only.
(x-2) people take part in golf only.
16 people do not take part in any of these activities.

(a) Show the number of people in each subset in the Venn diagram below.

(b) Given that 250 people are staying in the hotel, calculate

(i) x
(ii) the number of people who do not take part in swimming.
