INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
Attempt all the 8 questions in section A and any five questions in section B.
Any additional question (s) answered will not be marked.
Silent non – programmable electronic scientific calculators may be used.
Mathematical tables with a list of formulae and squared papers are to be provided.
All necessary calculations must be shown clearly on the answer sheet provided as the
rest of the answers, therefore no paper should be provided for rough work.
Begin each question on a fresh page of the sheet of the answer booklet.
Indicate the degree of accuracy at the end of each question attempted using Cal for
calculator or Tab for mathematical tables.
In numerical work, take acceleration due to gravity g to be = 9.8ms-2.

SECTION A: (40 marks)
Answer all questions in this section.

1. At a college course 75% of the students are male and 25% are female. It is further
known that 60% of the male students own a bike and 40% of the female students
own a bike. A student is selected at random.
Given that the student selected owns a bike, determine
the probability that the student is female (05 marks)

2. The price index of an article in 2000 based on 1998 was 130. The price index for
the article in 2005 based on 2000 was 80. Calculate the:
(a) price index of the particle in 2005 based on 1998.
(b) price of the article in 1998 if the price of the article was 45,000 in 2005. (05
marks)

3. Two events X and Y are such that P(Y )=0.7 , P( X)=0.4 and P ( Y / X )=0.3. Find the
probability that neither X nor Y occurs.(05 marks)

4.The probability that a student is awarded a distinction in the mathematics examination


is 0.15. In a randomly selected group of 15 students, what is the most likely
numberofstudents awarded a distinction (05 marks)

5. A sample consists of 15 numbers, 2,4,7,3,5,6,3,6,10,7,8,9,3,4,3.


Find:(i) the mean.
(ii) standard deviation of the sample. (05 marks)

6. At the end of the Big League, the goals scored by the teams forming the league
with their positions are shown below:

Calculate the rank correlation between the position and the goals scored.
Comment on your results. (05 marks)

7.The dimensions of a rectangle are 7.4c𝑚 and 6.25c𝑚,

(i)State the maximum possible error in each dimension

(ii)Find the range which the area of the rectangle lies.(05 marks)

8. A box of chalk has 12 pieces of which 3 are broken. If a random sample of 40


such boxes is taken, find the probability that between 9 and 13 boxes have broken
pieces of chalk. (05 marks)

SECTION B: (60 marks)


Answer any five questions from this section.
All questions carry equal marks.
9. (a) Given that and are mutually exclusive events and P(A) = 0.4 and P(B)=0.5,
find:
(i) P(AnB)
(ii) P(AnB')
(iii)P(A'nB')

(b) At a bus park, 60% of the buses are of Isuzu make, 25% are styer type and the rest
are of Tata make. Of the Isuzu type, 50% have radios, while for
the Styer and Tata types, only 5% and 1% have radio, respectively. If a bus
is selected at random from the park, determine the probability that:

(i)it has a radio

(ii) a Styer type is selected given that it has a radio. (12 marks )

10. (a) Given that a and b are estimated with corresponding errors ΔA and ΔB .

11. Eight candidates seeking admission to a university course sat for a written and
oral test. The scores were as shown in the table below.

(i). Draw a scatter diagram for this data
(ii). Draw a line of best fit on your scatter diagram
(iii). Use the line of best fit to estimate the value of Y when X=70.

12. The table below shows the number of red and green balls put in three identical
boxes A, B and C.

A box is chosen at random and two balls are then drawn from it successively without
replacement. If the random variable X is “the number of green balls drawn”,
a) draw a probability distribution table for X.

(b) calculate the mean and variance of X. (12marks)

13. The table below shows the prices of items per kg in the year 2001 and 2002.

14. The table below shows the distribution of the weights of a random sample of
mango seedlings.

15. (a) Events A and B are independent.


(i)Show that the events A and B' are also independent
(ii)Find 𝑃(𝐵 ) given that 𝑃(𝐴 ) = 0.4 and 𝑃(𝐴 𝑈 𝐵) = 0.8 ( 12marks)

16. Box A contains 7 yellow and 3 green oranges. Box B contains 4 yellow and 5
green oranges. An orange is randomly selected from A , and placed in B, and then
two oranges are randomly selected from B, one at a time without replacement,
and put in box A .
(a) Calculate the probability that the oranges transferred from A to B and back
to A are of the same colour. (04 marks)
(b) Draw a probability distribution table for the number of green oranges in
box A after the experiment. (02 marks)
(a) Find the mean and standard deviation of the number of oranges in box A
after the experiment. (06 marks)
