1. What is listening?

Listening in the context of communication refers to the


capacity to accurately perceive and evaluate the message.
All effective communication starts with attentive listening.
Understanding the message is made simple by attentive
listening.

2.1 Discriminative listening

It is defined as listening that is based on


the differentiation of sounds.
A person tries to comprehend the
intricacies of the sounds and the words
that they listen to.

Ex: An infant understands the tone, not words.


2.2 Analytical listening

It is the capacity to understand what is being


spoken by another individual.

Analytical listening's goal is to efficiently


identify logical connections in the
information as well as any potential gaps.
2.3 Empathic listening

It means being aware of, and


understanding, the speaker's feelings and
emotions, as well as the words.
This includes empathy and emotional
intelligence. Mentors and counsellors must
possess this skill.

Ex: “I can understand”


2.4 Comprehensive listening

It involves interpreting the words and


ideas of the speaker. It requires that
the listener understands the language
and vocabulary.

Ex- Lectures, Seminars, group


discussions
2.5 Appreciative listening

In this type of listening, a person appreciates others for


achieving the goal of meeting the need. For instance,
people use appreciative listening while listening to
favorite music, audiobooks, and poetry.
