EXPT.

NO: 8 DATE:
CATHODE RAY OSCILLOSCOPE
Aim:
To study the front panel controls of the cathode ray oscilloscope and to use the
CRO
1. Measure the amplitude of a given DC voltage.
2. Measure the amplitude and frequency of the given AC voltage.
3. Measure the phase angle and frequency by Lissajous figures.
Apparatus:
D.C Regulated power supply, CRO,
Function Generators-1, Capacitor 1F,
Resistance 10K,

Circuit Diagram:-

Procedure:

Measurement of DC Voltage.

a. Set the CRO to read high frequency.

b. Align the horizontal trace with one of the horizontal lines.
c. Apply an unknown DC voltage to one of the channels keeping the CRO in DC
mode.
d. Measure the number of vertical divisions shifted by the beam from the reference
horizontal line.
e. Repeat the same for 4 to 5 unknown DC voltage values and note down the readings
in a tabular from in table-1 and find out the voltage.

Measurement of AC voltage

b. Keep the signal generator in 1 KHz.

c. Set the oscilloscope horizontal time base to read 1 KHz.
d. Now apply an unknown amplitude AC signal to one channel.
e. Measure the number of divisions between peak to peak of the AC signal and
tabulate the readings.
f. Note the vertical scale used corresponding to that.
g. Note the voltage of the unknown signal is obtained by multiplying the no.of
divisions by the vertical scale used.
h. Repeat the above by giving 4 to 5 unknown amplitudes of the AC signal from the
signal generator and tabulate the readings in table-2.

Measurement of frequency (time-period)

a. Apply a signal of unknown frequency from the signal generator to one of the
channels of CRO.
b. Set horizontal time base scale to observe at least 4 cycles of the signals.
c. Measure the no. of horizontal divisions between two successive peaks of the signal
on the CRO screen.
d. Note the time base scale used.
e. Now the time period (T) in seconds of the signal is obtained by multiplying the
horizontal divisions by the time base scale in seconds.
f. The frequency of the unknown signal, f=1/T Hz.
g. Repeat the above 4 to 5 unknown frequencies of the signal from the signal generator
and tabulate the readings in table-3.

Measurement of phase angle by Lissajous figures:

a. Design the RC network by using the formula Tan  =1/ CR for this use f=1 KHz,
C=1F and  =450 Find R.
b. Connect the circuit diagram as shown in fig1.
c. Keep the CRO in XY mode. Bring the spot of the CRO to centre of the screen with
zero signals on both the channels, and apply both the channels as shown in fig 1.
d. We will get an elliptical trace as shown in fig2.
e. Measure A and B
f. The phase difference between the applied two signals is measured as  =Sin-1(B/A).
g. Repeat the above with different resistance (R) values and compute the resulting
phase difference by tabulating the readings in table-4.

Result:

Cathode Ray Oscilloscope and all measurements are studied.
