Energy Efficiency Calculations Answers

1. Calculate the efficiency of the following devices.

Write each answer as a decimal to 2 decimal places.

a. A toaster with a total input energy of 800 J and a useful output energy of 520 J.
520
= 0.65
800
efficiency = 0.65

b. A washing machine with a total input energy of 1800 J and a useful output energy
of 810 J.
810
= 0.45
1800
efficiency = 0.45

2. Calculate the efficiency of the following devices.

Write each answer as a percentage.

a. A lamp with a total input energy of 1250 J and a useful output energy of 500 J.
500
= 0.4
1250
0.4 × 100 = 40%

efficiency = 40%

b. A microwave with a total input energy of 1200 J and a useful output energy of 600 J.
600
= 0.5
1200
0.5 × 100 = 50%

efficiency = 50%

c. A drill with a total input energy of 2 kJ and a useful output energy of 1400 J.
1 kilojoule = 1000 joules

2 kJ × 1000 = 2000 J
1400
= 0.7
2000
0.7 × 100 = 70%

efficiency = 70%

3. Over one hour, 720 000 J of energy is transferred to a games console. The energy
dissipated to the surroundings over the hour is 120 000 J.
Calculate the efficiency of the games console.
Write your answer as a decimal to 2 decimal places.

useful output energy = 720 000 – 120 000 = 600 000 J

600 000
= 0.83 (2 d.p.)
720 000
efficiency = 0.83

4. A vacuum cleaner has an efficiency of 0.35. While it is being used, 830 000 J of energy is
transferred to it.
Calculate the useful output energy of the vacuum cleaner.

0.35 × 830 000 = 290 500

useful output energy = 290 500 J

5. A TV has an efficiency of 0.42. While it is being used, 920 kJ of energy is transferred to it.
Calculate the amount of energy that is wasted during its use. Give your answer in joules.

920 kJ × 1000 = 920 000 J

useful output energy = 0.42 × 920 000 = 386 400

wasted energy = 920 000 − 386 400 = 533 600

or wasted energy = 0.58 × 920 000 = 533 600

wasted energy = 533 600 J

6. A lightbulb has an efficiency of 0.7. It transfers 504 J of energy as visible light.

Calculate the total input energy of the light bulb.
504
= 720
0.7
total input energy = 720 J
