ASPEN Hysys: Steps Involved

Property Environment:

 Add Components
 Specify Fluid Package (Thermodynamics)
 Include Reactions (kinetics, conversions, equilibrium)

Simulation Environment:

 Specify Material Streams (T, P, Flow rate, Compositions)

 Choose desired Reactor type (e.g. PFR, CSTR, Conversion, Equilibrium)
 Initiate Simulation for chosen reactor connected with specified material stream

Problem Statement 1: Dynamic Modeling

Water is being fed in a tank continuously as shown in figure. The

feed conditions and the tank size are given below.

Feed conditions:
Temperature: 25oC
Pressure: 10 bar
Flow rate: 100 kgmol/h

Design parameters (Tank):

Length (m): 2.00
Diameter (m): 1.00
 Carry out the mass balance across the tank to develop a
Initial liquid holdup: 20%
steady state and dynamic model using ASPEN-Hysys.
 Use process control tools to develop a dynamic model.
 Simulate the behavior of tank filling (i.e. height of liquid
level or liquid hold-up) with time.
 Show the plot depicting change in process variables (PV)
with time against set-point (SP).

Problem Statement 2: Dynamic Modeling
A feed containing water and methanol is being fed in a tank
continuously as shown in figure. The feed conditions and the tank
size are given below.

Feed conditions:
Temperature: 25oC
Pressure: 10 bar
Flow rate: 100 kgmol/h
Compositions (mol%):
Methanol: 0.8
Water: 0.2

Design parameters (Tank):  Carry out overall and component mass balance across the
Length (m): 2.00 tank to develop a steady state and dynamic model.
Diameter (m): 1.00  Use process control tools to develop a dynamic model.
 Simulate the behavior of tank filling (i.e. height of liquid
Controllers (PID type) to be simulated: level) with time.
 FIC, TIC, PIC for materials stream  Show the plot showing change in process variables (PV) with
 LIC for tank time against set-point (SP).

Problem Statement 3:- Split Controller for the Mixer

Feed Condition:
Cold stream:
Temperature: 25oC
Pressure: 500 kPa
Flow rate: 200 kg/hr
Hot stream:
Temperature: 90oC
Pressure: 500 kPa
Flow rate: 150 kg/hr

1. Create the Steady State simulation for the Mixer system.

2. Take 10kPa pressure drop across valves for dynamic process.
3. Run the Dynamic simulations using Ratio (feed-forward controller) to log the data for
various ratio of Hot and Cold water stream for the process.

Problem Statement 4:- Dynamic Water tank Filling

Feed Condition: Valve specifications: @ 60oC, 1 psi

Temperature: 25oC Cv for inlet: 75 US gallon/min
Pressure: 5 bar Cv for outlet: 55 US gallon/min
Flow rate: 5000 kg/hr Controller specifications:
Composition: Mass Fraction FIC LIC
Water (0.9)
SP 5000 kg/hr 50%
air (0.1)
0 kg/hr 0%
7000 kg/hr 100%
0.5 0.5
1 min 5 min

1. Create the Steady State simulation for the tank system.

2. Add Flow and Level Controllers to the steady state system.
3. Run the Dynamic simulations to log the data for Liquid percent level for tank and SP for
the LIC. (You can also do the same for the Flow Controller.)
