Course Title: : Mechanics of Structures

Lecture No: 29
Shear force and bending moment
Delivered by :Dr. Prashant Sunagar
Contents
Shear force and bending moment, shear force in beam, bending moment,
Sign convention, shear force and bending moment equation, SFD and BMD
with values for overhanging beams considering point loads and udl
Lecture Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of this lecture, student will be able to:

• Evaluate SF and BM at different points in overhanging beams
• Draw SFD and BMD for overhanging beams
Sign conventions

Shear Force

Bending Moment

Sagging Hogging
Problems on shear force and bending moment
Draw SFD and BMD for the overhanging beam shown in figure

Support reactions
Problems on shear force and bending moment
Portion AB
Fx = 3- 2x
FA = 3kN, FB = - 5 kN
Between A and B
Fx =0 =3- 2x
x = 1.5

MA = 0, MB = -4 kNm
Mmax occurs at D
MD= 3*1.5 *– 1.52 =2.25kNm
Portion BC
Fx = 3-8+9-2x =4-2(x-4)
FB = 4kN, FC = 0
MB = -4 kNm, MC = 0
Problems on shear force and bending moment

D is the point where SF changes sign

FD = 0 and Mmax occurs at D
Point E is called point of contra-
flexure
To obtain position of point of contra-
flexure
Equate Mx for portion AB = 0

=0
X = 3m
Point of contra flexure is the point where BM is zero after changing sign
Problems on shear force and bending moment
A beam of length 8m rests on supports 5m apart, the right hand end is
Overhanging by 2m and left hand end is overhanging by 1m. The beam
Carries two point loads of 4kN and 6kN at each end of the beam. The load of
4kN is at the extreme left of the beams, where as the load of 6kN is at the
extreme right of the beam. Draw SF and BM diagrams for the beam and find
The points of contraflexure. (Ans. 1.405m and 4.955m from the extreme left.)
Summary

• Finding reactions in overhanging beams are required to draw SFD

and BMD
• BM is maximum at a section where SF is zero after changing sign
• Point where BM is zero after changing its sign is called point of
contraflexure or point of inflection
