elaboration. For example, a basic paragraph in an expository essay might include a topic sentence,
an idea about the topic, an example to support the idea, and a concluding sentence.

3. Definition
How would you describe definition as a mode of paragraph development?
It is the method of trying to understand the meanings of a word or an expression. It is also
knowing what concepts are associated with a word and what are not , what is it like, what are its
causes and effects, and what some examples of it are.

4. Process analysis

Persuasive paragraphs usually consist of a topic sentence, body sentences, and a closing sentence.
The topic sentence includes the writer's opinion, and the body sentences support that opinion.
Finally, the closing sentence restates the writer's opinion.

6. Description
Description: Provide specific details about what something looks, smells, tastes, sounds, or feels
like. Organize spatially, in order of appearance, or by topic. (See an example.) Process: Explain how
something works, step by step.

7. Example
The model paragraph uses illustration (giving examples) to prove its point.
 Decide on a controlling idea and create a topic sentence

 Give an example (or multiple examples)
 Explain the example(s)
 Complete the paragraph's idea or transition into the next paragraph.

In a classification paragraph, separate items are grouped into categories according to shared
characteristics. Depending on the subject, you may be asked to classify people, organisms, things,
or ideas. Topic sentence identifies what is to be classified and the categories used.

What is comparison and contrast in paragraph development?
Comparison in writing discusses elements that are similar, while contrast in writing discusses
elements that are different. A compare-and-contrast essay, then, analyzes two subjects by
comparing them, contrasting them, or both.

or more topics
2. Address Both Similarities and Differences

10.Cause/effect

Use cause and effect in paragraphs when you are tracking the development of one situation or
event out of another. Cause and effect is an analytical mode of paragraph development that
attempts to show how events are influenced by or caused by others--the linkage of causation.

What is an example of paragraph development by cause and effect?

The cause and effect text structure is used so commonly that you have probably written a
paragraph using it and not noticed. Example 1: Many people think that they can get sick by going
into cold weather improperly dressed; however, illnesses are not caused by temperature- they are
caused by germs.
