It often happens that a computer stops working or does not function

properly. Normally, the cause of the problem may not be obvious especially if
hardware and software are involved. This is where we apply troubleshooting.
This is the process of looking for the cause of the malfunction, identifying the
problem and the parts involved. This is like the diagnostic procedures done
when somebody falls ill. A correct diagnosis will lead to an effective plan of
action or repair strategy to make the computer system operational again.
However, a mistaken diagnosis could lead to a worse problem! So, one must be
careful and systematic.

The following are some tips for systematic troubleshooting:

1. Interview the user. It is important to ask questions so you could have

details such as when, where, and how the problem started.
2. Back up data before you make any changes to the system.
3. Perform a careful examination of the parts of the computer system. Have
your hypotheses and initial theory on the cause of the problem.
4. Test your theory. If it is not confirmed, form another theory, and check
it out. Repeat until you narrow down to the most probable cause.
5. After you know the source of the problem, plan what to do to fix the
problem and then fix it according to established procedures.
6. Verify if the problem is fixed and that the system works. Take any
preventive measures to make sure the problem does not happen again.
7. Note down or record your repair procedures and actions, outcomes, and
what you learned. These will be useful for future repair projects.

"If you take the attitude that you can understand and solve the problem,
no matter how deeply you have to dig, you probably will solve it." Perseverance
is important but remember to check manuals and professional advice.
