Lesson Plan: Simple Present Tense

Professor: Rashell Hislop Class: ENGLISH I Level: A 1 Dates: July 7th

Class Duration: 135 Minutes ( 2 hours 15 minutes)

Lesson Plan: Simple Present Tense

Objectives:

 Understand the basic structure and use of the simple present tense (subject + base
verb)
 Practice forming and using affirmative sentences in the simple present for example
"I walk to school," "He reads books."
 Read a short, simple text about someone's daily routine.
 Answer basic comprehension questions (e.g., "What time does she wake up?").
 Listen to a short audio recording of someone describing their day.
 In pairs, practice asking and answering questions about the recording (e.g., "What
does he do in the afternoon?").
 Learn about daily routines (e.g., wake up, brush teeth, eat breakfast, go to
school/work, study, exercise, watch TV, go to bed)
 Understand time expressions (e.g., always, usually, sometimes, never, every day, on
weekends)

Sentences and Words to Know:

 "I wake up at 7 am."


 "She eats breakfast at 8 am."
 "They go to work at 9 am."
 "We exercise in the evening."
 "He watches TV at 8 pm."
 "She goes to bed at 10 pm."

Presentation (20 minutes):

 Explain the rules for forming the simple present tense (subject + base form of the
verb; for he/she/it add -s/es).
 Highlight common time expressions used with the simple present tense.
 Provide examples on the board and encourage students to form sentences.

Activity 1: Reading and writing(25minutes):

 Provide a short text about someone's daily routine.


 Example text: "John wakes up at 7 am. He eats breakfast at 8 am. He goes to work at
9 am. He exercises in the evening. He goes to bed at 10 pm."
 Students read the text and answer comprehension questions:
o What time does John wake up?
o What does he do at 8 am?
o When does he exercise?
 Students write a short paragraph about their own daily routines using the simple
present tense.
 Pair up students to share and correct each other's paragraphs.
 Walk around and provide feedback as needed.

Break (10 minutes)

Activity 2: Listening (20 minutes):

 Play an audio recording of someone talking about their daily routine.


 Students listen and complete a worksheet with questions about the audio.
o Example questions: What time does the person wake up? What do they do
after work?
 Play the recording twice and discuss the answers as a class.

Final Activity : Role play (45 minutes):


 Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening:
o Divide the class into small groups.
o Each group creates a short skit about daily routines, incorporating the simple
present tense.
o Students perform their skits in front of the class.
 Provide constructive feedback on their use of the simple present tense.

Wrap-up (15 minutes):

 Reflect on the use of the simple present tense.


 Answer any questions and provide additional practice resources if necessary.
