ABOUT THE Tim Gilles has authored and coauthored several textbooks. He is professor emeri-
tus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College
AUTHOR where he recently retired after teaching automotive for 38 years. Tim earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts from Long Beach State University and a
Master of Arts degree in Occupational Education from Chicago State University.
He has held the industry certifications of ASE Master Automotive Technician and
ASE Master Engine Machinist.
Tim has been active in professional associations for many years, as presi-
dent and board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT) and as a
board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of
Automotive Teachers (NACAT). He is a frequent seminar presenter at association
conferences. Tim was a longtime member of the California Community College
Chancellor’s Trade and Industry Advisory Committee. He is active in industry
associations, including AERA, ARC, and IATN, and served several terms as educa-
tion representative on the board of the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent
Automotive Professionals Association (IAPA).

összeütközésbe kerűl, mely valósággal tragikus, a mennyiben az
egyik oldalon a létezőnek szent és szükségszerű tekintélye, a
másikon pedig a haladás lelkesítő eszméje, az eleven cselekvésre
ösztönző, benső meggyőződés egyenlő joggal állanak szemközt. Ha
a hős, a haladó világszellem eszközének érezve magát, enged keble
teremtő sugallatának: vétkessé lesz a fönnálló világrend megsértése
által, melynek áldozatáúl is esik. A nagy vallásalapítók és
reformátorok, meggyőződésök vértanúi, a közszabadság
előharczosai, valamint az imperátorok is, kik életképtelen
respublikákon a történeti szükségszerűség törvényét végrehajtják, a
szellem bajnokai, kik áldozatúl esnek egy nagy fölfedezésnek: ezek
a hősei a históriai helyzettragédiának, mely azonban a népharczok,
udvari és állami események, bitorlások és forradalmak epikai
tömegképeivé sohasem fajúlhat, hanem a világszellemnek mindíg
egyes emberben megjelenését követeli. A történeti korszakok
összeütközése, mint ilyen, nem tragikus, hanem csak az egyén,
mely közte összezúzódik». Így Gottschall, ki példákúl Sokratest
és Mohamedet, Bresciai Arnoldot és Savonarolat, Husst és Luthert,
Columbust és Galileit, Julius Cæsart és Cromwellt idézi. A dolog
lényege abban fekszik, hogy a hős a haladás elvét a létezővel
kibékíthetetlennek tekinti s ilyenűl is képviseli, nagyobbára az
elbízott akarat kiválóságának s az egyoldalúság gyarlóságának
formájában.
A mondottakból önként következik, hogy a fönnállóban nem
kereshetjük s nem találhatjuk meg mindig az egyetemest. Csakis ott
és addig, a míg biztosítani képes a közjólétet, megelégedést,
nyugalmat; míg valóban a létezőhöz ragaszkodó közmeggyőződés,
s nem egyeseknek vagy osztályoknak önzö erőszakossága tartja
fönn. Világos, hogy a Gottschall által idézett példák egy része is
már ide tartozik. A mint a csakis gonosz hatalom áll szemközt, bár a
maradandóság jogos elvének hamis álarczában, az igazság
képviselőjével, kit talán időre-órára sikerűl elnémítania, külsőkép
megbuktatnia is: kettejök viszonyát már nem tekinthetjük tragikainak.
Itt merűl fel a kérdés, hogy vajjon Krisztus pályáját, szenvedését és
halálát lehetséges-e tragikai felfogás alá vonnunk vagy sem. A
legrégibb Krisztus-dráma a negyedik századból maradt ránk,
Khrisztosz paszkhón, a szenvedő Krisztus czímmel, s állítólagos
szerzője Nazianzi Gergely vagy Laodiceai Apollinaris. Az
előttünk folyó jeleneteknek tulajdonképeni központja: Mária. Az ő
gyötrődése és siralmai a fő dolog, melyekben fia elfogatásának,
elítéltetésének és halálának hírére kitör; maga Krisztus csak rövid
búcsúvételre jelenik meg. A cselekvény későbbi folyama a keresztfa
alá, azután a sziklasírhoz Arimathiai József kertjében, majd meg
Márk apostol anyjának házához vezet, hol a feltámadt Üdvözítő még
egyszer megjelenik. E nevezetes költemény sajátságos keveréke a
görög és alexandriai drámára utaló reminiscentiáknak, majdnem
idézeteknek, s az evangéliom szellemének és szavainak. Egy felől a
középkori egyházi színmű első példájának tekinthetjük, melyben ép
oly kevéssé kereshetünk tragikai felfogást, mint a misztériumokban.
De más felől mintegy csodálatos jövendőmondásnak tűnik fel az
ezer év múlva megszületendő új drámáról, melynek kiképződésére
nemcsak a keresztyén szellem, hanem az antik drámai felfogás is
kétségtelenűl hatott. Szent Gergely görög dialogjaiban az antik
művészetet, Euripides és Lykophron verseit, ép olyan formán
használja föl a keresztyén szellem a maga szolgálatára, mint a hogy
a római Jupiter-szobrot Szent Péter hires képévé formálta. A
nevezetes színmű czélja, bizonyos dogmatikus eszmék terjesztésén
kívül, csak a vallásos érzés erősítése. Így a középkor híres
misztériumai, vangelioi, miracle-playi, autoi s husvéti játékai mind
nem tragikai megrendítésre, hanem csak jámbor megindításra
törekszenek. Naiv felfogásukat nem a világrend rejtélyes
hatalmainak képzete, hanem az egyház tanainak betűje táplálja és
vezérli. Bár az újabb Krisztus-drámák, melyek közűl csak az olasz
Govean Felixét említjük meg, a műforma fejlettségének egészen
más fokán állanak, felfogás tekintetében nincs köztük és elődeik
között lényeges különbség. Hősüket megszólaltatják fülünk hallatára,
de az evangéliom szavaival; testi alakjában, a földön járva mutatják
be, de mennyei glóriájának teljes ragyogásában. Igazi tragédiát
Krisztusról még senki sem írt.
 Vajjon írhatna-e? Megvannak-e a tragikai felfogás feltételei a
tárgyban, megvannak-e világnézletünkben, bennünk, kiket a
költőnek meg kellene győznie tragikai eszméjének igazságáról?
Tisztán az eszthetikai vizsgálat körében maradva s csupán a biztos
történeti adatok tanúságát fogadva is el, bizonyosnak tarthatjuk,
hogy a Krisztussal szemben álló rend semmi módon nem tekinthető
az egyetemes képviselőjének. E rendet már nem a zsidóság őszinte
és benső ragaszkodása tarja fönn hagyományaihoz, mint inkább
vezetőinek őnző érdeke. A nép maga elégedetlen; nemzeti és
emberi megaláztatásában messiásra, szabadítóra vágyik. Ilyenűl
jelenik meg Krisztus. Vele szemben a létezőnek, a fönnállónak
jogára való hivatkozás hamis volt és hamis marad minden időben.
Az ő reformja nem ütközött bele a közmeggyőződésbe, mely már
elvesztette a szilárd talajt lábai alól. Minden ingadozott: Jeruzsálem
a szőrszálhasogatások, viszályok, gyűlölködés és vallási lázongások
fészke. A nép nem találta jólétének, nyugalmának őreit, erkölcsi
meggyőződésének kifejezéseit azokban, a kik uralkodtak felette;
boldogúlására új eszméket, új formákat keresett. A tudományból,
mely a hitéletet táplálta, hiányzott az erkölcsi erő. A papság nem
állott a vallásos mozgalmak élén. Csakis a maga érdekeit
védelmezte, mint az előkelők, a farizeusok, e hitetlen és képmutató
arisztokraczia, mely Renan szerint az oltárról élt, de
haszontalanságnak tartotta azt. A papság nem ápolta és szolgálta a
zsidóságnak sem nemzeti, sem vallásos meggyőződését: egyszerű
eszközévé sűlyedt a római politikának, melylyel csak saját hasznát
igyekezett kiegyenlíteni. A Boéthuzim nevű hatalmas papi
nemesség, emelkedését Herodes szenvedélyének köszönte
Marianna iránt. Erkölcsi valójuk nem tagadta meg hatalmuk forrását:
világiasak és hitetlenek voltak, valódi epikureusok. A főpapi
méltóság Hanan családjának kezében volt. E családot általában
kevélység, vakmerőség, kegyetlenség és alattomos gonoszság
jellemezték. A döntő szót, mely Krisztust vesztébe taszította, Kaifás
mondta ki, az akkori főpap, az ádáz s titokban még mindig uralkodó
Hanan veje. Lerontja az isten templomát, hogy három nap múlva
újra felépítse azt: e nyilatkozat volt az elhatározó vád. A bősz
felindúlás, melylyel hangoztatták, abban leli magyarázatát, hogy a
templomban az ő gazdagságuk és tekintélyök forrását féltették.
Nekik az ő templomuk kellett s nem az új. Ime Krisztus ellenségei, a
kik megölték. A tragikus hős fölött diadalmaskodó egyetemesnek,
legalább bizonyos döntő tekintetben, mindig igaza van: az igazi
tragikai megnyugvás ebből fakad. Kereshetjük-e az egyetemesnek
képviseletét, védelmét, az igazság magvát a pártban, mely Krisztust
keresztre feszítette? Hatalmát a közmeggyőződésből merítette-e? A
keresztyén legenda által táplált érzésünk csak az önzést, a
pusztulásra megért sűlyedést, a nemezissel daczoló gonoszságot
látja oldalukon, tehát mind oly mozzanatokat, melyek ép őket állítják
szembe az egyetemessel. E felfogásnak ad kifejezést az egész
keresztyén művészet ama számtalan műalkotásban, melyekben
Krisztus elítéltetését s különösen megfeszíttetését ábrázolta. A
firenzei Capella Spagna falképétől kezdve, Tintorettonak
velenczei óriás freskóján át, egészen Munkácsy festményeiig: a
Krisztus vesztére törő alakok gonoszságát, az erkölcsi rútat bennök,
a testi rútságnak mily szakadatlan s mily változatos típusai fejezik ki!
De, a mint már megjegyeztük, a történeti vizsgálat is erősíti,
támogatja felfogásunkat, mely Krisztusban az emberiség erkölcsi
megváltóját, az egyetemesnek isteni képviselőjét látja, kinek halála
nem tragikai nemezis, hanem vérengző erőszakosság. E halál nem
is bukás. Nem bukása még az elsietésnek, a makacsságnak,
túlbizakodásnak és rajongásnak sem, mely a körűlményekkel nem
tud megalkudni. Ő nem alkudhatott meg; de nem is volt szüksége
megalkuvásra. Győzelme nem a kiegyenlítő, megérlelő, előkészítő
idő távolában, hanem úgy szólván azonnal bekövetkezett. Képéből
nem ment egyetlen vonás veszendőbe, valami olyas, a mitől a
halálnak az alapjában nagy törekvésű tragikai hősök alakját is meg
kell tisztítania. Mikor kivégeztetett, győzött egyszersmind; győzött
nem lelkének jobb fele, nem olynemű tökéletessége, mely addig
csak a föld gőzkörének homályában mutatkozhatott, hanem győzött
egészen, mindenestül, a mint volt. Szenvedésére és halálára a
tragikai érzések közűl csak szánalommal tekintünk, de ennek sem
azzal a tiszta nemével, melynek alapját Greguss nem helytelenűl
keresi bizonyos egyenlőségi érzetben, hanem inkább fájdalmas
csodálattal. A másik tragikai érzést, a félelmet, pedig egészen más
mozzanatok enyhítik meg, sőt nyomják el. Inkább a halál le-
legyőzetését látjuk általa és saját részességünket érezzük a
végtelenben. A legtisztább fenség érzete. Ha a gyászos kép
egészében érzünk is valami tragikait, ez, mint Zeising megjegyzi,
«csak másodrendű, alárendelt elem, mely a főjellem fenségét
tragikai környezetben mutatja s a cselekvény összhatását csupán
árnyékolja, de lényegesen nem módosítja».
Háttérben, távol marad a gondolat, hogy a nagynak is buknia kell,
hogy a legnagyobb földi nagyság is csak emberi nagyság, melyet
habár csak egy szemernyi gyarlósága veszedelembe sodorhat. Ily
mozzanatot, mely az igazi tragikumnak oly fontos tényezője,
találhatunk-e, vagy legalább csak homályosan érezhetünk-e az ő
alakján? Renan megkísérlette kutatását, s e tekintetben Krisztus
pályájának különösen egy pontjára irányozza figyelmünket: a
bethaniai csodára, Lázár feltámasztására. A jeruzsálemi tömeg
csodát kivánt tőle s ő nem tiltakozott ellene, hogy Bethániában
csoda történt. «E tisztátalan és rá nézve nyomasztó városban Jézus
nem volt önmagáé. Az ő lelkiismerete az emberek s nem az ő hibája
miatt elvesztett valamit eredeti tisztaságából. Kétségbeesve s
végletekig űzve, nem volt többé hatalmában önmagának. Küldetése
paracsolt neki s ő egészen önkénytelenűl engedelmeskedett.
Magáévá fogadta a csodákat». Ez lenne hát tragikumának sarka, a
gyarlóság mozzanata, melyen gyászos végzete megfordúlt. Renan
az okozatosságot sem téveszti szem elől: a bethaniai csoda,
szerinte, jelentékenyen befolyt Krisztus élete végének siettetésére. E
csoda hírére űlt össze ellene először a főpapi tanács. A tragikai
következtetés bármily finoman van is előadva, élesen és
kibékíthetetlenűl ütközik bele a keresztyén felfogásba, melynek
alapján állunk, érzünk és gondolkodunk. E felfogás Krisztust nem
tekintheti máskép, mint az egyetemesnek a maga teljességében való
képviselőjét, mely minden fogyatkozást, foltot, gyarlóságot kizár. Az
ő benne vetett hit által tartatunk meg; más szóval: az ő követése
biztosítja öszhangban, egyességben maradásunkat az istenivel, az
egyetemessel. Nincs bölcselet, mely e tételt kétségbevonhatná s
üdvösségünknek a Krisztusétól bármiben eltérő utat tudna mutatni.
Szellemünk benne a tökéletesség képét látja, a fenséget
legmagasabb fokán s a legmagasztosabb gyönyörről, melyet ily kép
szemlélete nyújt, nem mondhat le. Ha nem őrzené is más,
megőrzené hitünk az emberiség erkölcsi tökéletesedésében,
melynek szüksége van az ő példájára. E példa mindörökre Krisztus
marad s e szükségérzet mindörökre távol fogja tartani az ő isteni
alakjától a gyarlóság képzetét.
Ezt a gyarlóságot pedig megtaláltuk s megtalálhatjuk mind
azokban a tragikai hősökben is, kik nemcsak erejökkel és
nagyságukkal vívják ki megdöbbenésünket, hanem valamely erkölcsi
eszméért lángoló lelkesedésökkel és feláldozásukkal, mély
részvétünktől kisérve, sietnek bukásuk felé. Gyarlóságuk abban áll,
hogy szétszakítják a mi összetartozik; részeiben képviselik azt, a mit
egészében kellene szolgálniok; egymással szembe állítanak oly
hatalmakat, melyek csak egymást áthatva és támogatva igazán
megtartók. Szólottunk a haladás és maradás egyoldalú képviselőiről,
kik rajongásukban vagy kegyeletökben nincsenek tekintettel a másik
elv jogára. A tragikum alapját e körben, melyet Vischer általában
erkölcsi összeütközésnek nevez, az képezi, hogy az egyetemesből
ellentétekűl vonatnak ki oly hatalmak, melyek egymást föltételezik s
melyeknek az eszme egységébe kell foglaltatniok. Ez egység maga
erkölcsi hatalom. Megsértése főként a mértékletesség és
egyoldalúság gyarlósága által, tragikai vétség még akkor is, ha nem
történik is épen oly tettel, mely a szó szoros értelmében s minden
körülmény között sérelmes lenne az erkölcsi törvényre. A történet
forradalmi korszakaiban, az állami és társadalmi intézmények
erőszakos átalakulásai közt, a hitélet rajongó küzdelmei során
feltünő tragikai jelenségek majdnem kivétel nélkül e körbe tartoznak.
Jogos hatalmakúl látjuk egymással szemközt Antigonéban az állami
törvényt és a vérszeretetet, az Oresteiában a fiúi tartozást a
meggyilkolt atya s a bűnös anya iránt, Julius Caesarban a
republikanus és monarchikus elvet, Romeo és Juliában a szerelmet
és a családi kötelességet, Bánk bánban a becsület védelmét és a
jobbágyi hűséget. Az egész franczia klasszikai drámának majd
valamennyi tragikai alkotása ebben a körben mozog; indítékuk az
összeütközés egyfelől a szenvedély, másfelől valamely pozitiv
kötelesség között. Corneillenél mindig az utóbbi győz, míg utódja
Racine rend szerint a szenvedélyt juttatja diadalra, azaz vezeti a
tragikai vétségig. Lope de Vegának is van egy híres tragédiája:
Sevilla csillaga, mely egy kiválóan tragikai erejű összeütközésbe
keveri hősét, Ortist; egy felől a jobbágyi hűség, más felől a barátság
és családi becsület. A spanyol fölfogás amazt juttatja győzelemre; de
e diadalból nem fakadhat üdv, csak romlás. Ortis, ki a buja király
parancsára megölte Bustost, barátját s menyasszonyának bátyját és
védelmezőjét a fölkent gonosztevő ellen, a mór harczokban találja
halálát, míg Estrella kolostorba vonúl.
A tragikumnak ezt a nemét, az erkölcsi összeütközését, becsűli
Vischer a legnagyobbra. De némi homályba, sőt tévedésbe esik
fogalmának úgy bölcseleti kimélyítése, mint túlságos kiterjesztése
által. Ide sorolja példáúl az egyénit, nemcsak mint egy általános
eszme hivatott képviselőjét, hanem oly törekvéseiben is, midőn
magát és csakis magát akarja az összesség ellenében
érvényesíteni. Az egyéniség joga is jog; de itt aztán jól meg kell
egymástól különböztetnünk azokat a hősöket, kik e jogért bizonyos
általánosságban, a köznek szemmeltartásával s egy erkölcsi eszme
páthoszával küzdenek, meg azokat, kik e küzdelemben csak
magukra gondolnak, csak a saját hatalmok általánosítására
törekszenek, szemben minden más egyéniséggel, az egyetemessel.
Ha a fogalmakban zavart nem akarunk okozni, úgy Macbethet és
Rikhárdot világosan távol kell tartanunk a tárgyalt formától, melyet
Vischer az elvek harczának jellemez. Szerinte az ide tartozó
jelenségeknél úgy tetszik, mintha már nem is személyek, hanem
tisztán elvek harczolnának egymással. Ezt sem lehet
megkülönböztető mozzanatúl elfogadnunk, mert hisz egy kissé
általánosítva a legtöbb tragikai összeütközésbe belemagyarázhatjuk
az elvi harczot.
Az ily összeütközések megoldása, a katasztrófa hátterében,
természetökből önként következik. Láttuk, hogy e jelenségekben fő
fontosságú az egyetemes egészének, uralkodó öszhangjának
megsértése. Ennek a harmoniának helyreállását, az egymás ellen
fordított jogos eszmék összebékűlését kell előidéznie a tragikai
végzetnek. Erre nézve pedig nem mindig elég magának a hősnek
bukása. Ha az ő makacs egyoldalúsága, melylyel eszméjét
képviselte, a vele szemben álló páthoszt hasonló egyoldalúságba
kergette, hasonló daczra ingerelte: a harmonia csak utánuk s csak
megegyezés által állhat helyre. A félszegségek elvesztik
érdességöket, a forrongó eszmék megtisztúlnak salakjoktól, a merev
fölfogások hajlani kezdenek és simulékonyabbakká lesznek, a
csapások és szenvedések meghozzák tanúlságukat, a fél igazságok
összeolvadnak egy egész igazsággá: s kész a megegyezés.
Antigone ellene szegűlt a törvénynek, mely a zaklatott haza
nyugalmának visszaszerzésére szükséges volt. Áthágta Kreonnak,
az államhatalom képviselőjének, tilalmát s eltemette testvérét,
egyedűl szíve sugallatára hallgatva. Az összeütközést, melyet
szenvedélyének egyoldalúsága hítt ki, makacsságával még jobban
elmérgesítette s halnia kellett. Kreonnak igaza volt irányában; de
neki sem volt teljes igaza. Jogát igenis mereven érvényesítette,
midőn a törvényt véres szigorral hajtotta végre a családi érzésnek, a
vérszeretetnek egy nemes fölindúlása ellen is. Ő sem gondol a
kiegyenlítés lehetőségére. Hæmon, az elitélt Antigonét mentve és
magasztalva, szemére veti atyjának, hogy a «joggal daczol».
Menyasszonyával együtt őt is meg fogja ölni. Ime, ugyanarra az
érzésre hivatkozik atyjában, melynek áldozata Antigone. Ha föl
tudná kelteni, bizonyára vele együtt ébredne az irgalom s meg lenne
mentve az egyetlen. Mindhiába. Kreon csak az itélet végrehajtása
után, Teiresias fenyegető jósszavaira rendűl meg. Gonosz sejtelem
által gyötörtetve, ingadozni kezd. A mit az egyik bűnöstől oly
makacson megtagadott, most megengedné a másiknak: maga
rendeli meg cselédjeinek Antigone eltemetését.

Én is megyek, s megfordúlt szándokom szerint,

Magam oldom fel őt, kit megköték magam.
Mert látom legjobb megmaradni őseink
Bevett szokási mellett éltünk végeig.

De már késő. Antigone maga után vonta a sírba Hæmont és

Eurydikét, kik Kreon életét becsessé tették. Ő maga megtörten,
nyomorúltan éli túl őket.

Haj! gyászba borúlt körülöttem a lét

 Megölte a végzet e szív örömét.

Ez egymást fölidéző, egymásra visszavágó csapásokból

mindenesetre valamely kiegyezés sarjad: az egyén mérsékelni fogja
makacsságát a közhatalommal szemközt, ez pedig emberiesebb
lesz itéletmondásaiban. Julius Cæsart Rómának hanyatló ereje
monarchiai törekvésre izgatja s ennek esik áldozatáúl. De
republikánus ellenségeit, Brutust s a többieket is vesztökbe sodorja
merev egyoldalúságuk s makacs ragaszkodásuk oly
hagyományokhoz, melyek a kor viszonyainak nem felelnek meg
többé. A philippii győzelem után Octavian társaival «osztja meg a
nap dicsőségét». Cæsar azt hitte, már itt az idő, melyben nem kell
osztoznia senkivel. Az elhullottak sírján még egy triumvirátus
emelkedik s ez átmeneti forma érleli meg a monarchiát. Romeonak
és Juliának, mértéktelen szerelmökkel, el kellett pusztúlniok a
gyűlölködés légkörében, mely őket körűlvette. «Mindnyájan
bűnhödénk», mondja holttestök előtt a fejedelem, s megtörik és
eszére tér a gyűlölet.
Ha már az erkölcsi törvényt, mint ilyet, állítjuk előtérbe, az
erkölcsi összeütközések tragikai jelenségei végtelen változatosságot
fognak mutatni. A sérelem minősége, ereje, súlya rendkívül
különböző lehet. Olykor alig áll egyébből, mint hogy az egyén, a
rázúdúló csapások közt, a maga páthosza jogosságának érzetében,
legalább szóval fakad ki oly hatalom ellen, mely vétlen eltapossa őt,
de a melyet ennek daczára is tisztelnie kellene. Másutt tiszta
lelkesedésből, merő jószándékból oly ballépést követ el, mely egy
fölötte joggal uralkodó erkölcsi eszme szempontjából, de csakis
ebből, már igazi vétség. Innen eljuthatunk egész odáig, hol az
erkölcsi törvénynek, jóllehet igaz sőt nemes fölindúlás által sugallott,
de már minden körűlmények között beszámítás alá eső s
megtorlásra méltó sérelmével, valódi erkölcsi vétséggel, botlással,
bűnnel találkozunk.
Három nőalakot idézhetünk e fejlődés fokozatainak példázására:
Corneille Camilláját, Kisfaludy Károly Irénéjét s a magyar
népballada Fehér Annáját. Camilla a Horatiusok testvére, római
szűz, egy Curiatius jegyese. A fegyverszünet Róma és Alba között,
reményt ébreszt a szeretőkben, hogy nemsokára egymáséi
lehetnek, mikor a harcz újra kitör. Hazája sorsát mindegyik fél a
hármas testvérek, a Horatiusok és Curiatiusok, küzdelmére bízza. A
hazaszeretetnek győznie kell a rokoni és baráti köteléken. Camilla
bátyjai szembeszállanak vőlegényével s hazájának érdeke
kibékíthetetlen ellentétbe kerűl szerelmével. Mikor az első hírt veszi
két testvérének haláláról, örűl kedvese szabadúlásán, de gyászba
borítja véreinek eleste s Róma megaláztatása. Fordúl a koczka, az
utolsó Horatius leveri ellenfeleit. Camilla jajgat jegyeseért, kinek
véres fegyvereit hozza elibe bátyja, Kétségbeesésében megátkozza
Rómát, melyet boldogtalansága forrásának érez: lánggal pusztítsa el
a villám! Felbőszűlt testvére leszúrja az átkozódót; a ki hazáját
megtagadja, az családjából is kiszakította magát. – Iréne, a
Konstanczinápoly elfoglalásakor rabúl esett görög leány, elfogadja
Mohamed szultán szerelmét, hogy hitsorsosai és hazája sorsán
segítsen befolyásával. Hogy azonban szolgálhasson ezeknek,
voltakép meg kell tagadnia honát is, hitét is; eszményének csak tőlök
elfordúlva áldozhat. De teljes elfordúlása lehetetlen: régi vőlegényét,
a görög Leot, szereti s nem képes végkép megtagadni szerelmét.
Mohamednek azonban nem áldozat, hanem szerelem kell s
csalódásának gyötrelmében elhatározza Iréne vesztét. Ez két okból
következik: áldozatának sikeréből ép úgy, mint sikertelenségéből.
Sikeréből, a mennyiben a szultánra gyakorolt szelidítő befolyása
föltámasztja a harczias párt ellenzékét, mely czéljai akadályának
ledöntésére, Iréne megbuktatására, törekszik. De e bukás vállalata
sikertelenségéből, szubjektiv fogyatékosságából is foly. Nem tud
nagy és nemes czélja érdekében teljes győzelmet aratni valója fölött,
igazi «erőt venni a szomorú nagyságra», elszakadni régi emlékeitől s
magát mindenestől, testestől-lelkestől odaadni Mohamednek: a
szultán haragját ezzel ingerli föl s ezzel sietteti végzetét.

Szelíd remény, hová, hová tünél?

Haszontalan sohajtlak; elhagyál,
S magam feláldozása egy hiú
Álom’ s csak ájtatos kivánat
Volt, csalfa vélemény szülöttje.
A fejlődés a nemezisig, egészen természetes. Egy erkölcsi eszmét
megtagadni s szolgálni egyszerre, szolgálni épen az által, hogy
megtagadjuk: nem lehet. Épen annak a hatalomnak szempontjából,
melynek titkon áldozni akart, követett el Iréne erkölcsi vétséget,
midőn hazája leigázójának, vallása legfélelmesebb ellenségének
nejévé lett. – A szegény Fehér Annát, kinek történetét Greguss a
legszebb magyar balladának tartja, testvéri szeretete csalja bűnre.
Oly tettre viszi, mely minden körűlmények között sérelmes lenne az
erkölcsi törvényre, erősebben sérelmes, semhogy a nemezist a jó
szándék, melyből elkövettetett, kiengesztelhetné. Azt a gondolatot
fejezi ki, hogy a rossz még jó czélból sem szabad. Bátyja, Fehér
Laczi, ló-lopásért Göncz városa tömlöczébe kerűl. Anna
kegyelemkérni keresi föl a hadnagyot s aranynyal kinálja. De ez más
föltételt szab: kiadja a betyárt, ha a szép leány egy éjjel vele hál. A
szűz lelki tusáját megható egyszerűséggel beszéli el a ballada.
Mitsem felel; elindúl némán fölkeresni bátyját, csak azért, hogy
látásából erőt merítsen. Elmondja a rostély-ablaknál, mit végzett a
hadnagygyal. A rab vissza akarja tartani s elriasztja; de a szegény
leány megadással tér vissza: föláldozni magát. A hadnagy
megcsalja, áldozata hiábavaló: még föl sem kel a bűn ágyáról, mikor
bátyját kivégzik. Tragikai végzete, mely nyomon követte vétségét,
teljes: gyalázatával sem érhette el czélját. A kiért elkövette bűnét, az
szégyenletes halállal veszett; maga semmivé téve, nyomorúltan
maradt. Szenvedése egy iszonyú átokban tör ki. Fehér Annával
rokon Szigligeti Nadányinéja, ki hogy elfogott férje életét
megmentse, föláldozza magát a buja fejedelemnek. Ép oly kevéssé
ér vele czélt, mint amaz, sőt semmivé teszi vele magát is, férjét is.
Gyalázatán felbőszűlve, Nadányi orgyilkossá sűlyed. Az országot
megszabadítja zsarnokától; de elidegeníti magától barátait s az új
fejedelmet is, ki meggyilkoltatja.
Az ő tragikai vétségök mind a jóakaratban találja forrását;
páthoszuk, mely veszedelmökké lesz, egy-egy nemes erkölcsi
eszme hevűlete. Egy lépéssel tovább haladva, oly jelenségekkel
találkozunk, kiknek ballépése még nem rosszakaratból, nem
ridegebb fajta önzésből, hanem csak meggondolatlanságból,
könnyelműségből, a léleknek valamely kisebb fogyatkozásából ered.
Amazok oly komolynak és uralkodónak éreztek bizonyos erkölcsi
kötelességet, hogy egy másikat készek voltak megszegni miatta.
Ezek nem érzik elég komolynak azt sem, melyet betölthetnének;
mentségök fogy s vétségök, bármily csekély forrásból fakad,
súlyosodik. Egy, magában talán jelentéktelen tettel fölzaklatják az
egyetemest. A tett, a megzavart világnak okozatosságában, előre
nem látott, nem is sejtett következéseket von maga után. Az egyén
már ezekben nem akarja a maga cselekedetét ismerni; de mikor
mintegy általa megindítva rá visszazúdúlnak, kénytelen felelni értök.
Bánk is azt kiáltja Melinda holtteste előtt:

Nem ezt akartam én, nem ezt.

De a tragikai egyén akarata csak megindítja s nem vezeti végig a

dolgok folyását.
Alig magyarázhatnók e jelenséget alkalmasabb példán, mint
Arany Tetemre hivásán. Kund Abigél szép szeretője, titkos arája
Bárczi Benőnek. A levente heves és féktelen természetű: apja fia.
Közte s Abigél közt nem vala gát, mert szerették egymást; de a lány
mégis csak «titkos arája» volt. Elválaszthatta őket valamely külső
akadály, talán Benő atyjának akarata, mely a tetemre hivás
jeleneteiben oly félelmesen erőszakosnak mutatkozik. Ez az akadály
is izgathatta Benőt; legalább abban akart újra meg újra bizonyossá
lenni, hogy a leány szereti őt. Igenre únszolta, új szerelmi
vallomásra. Abigél kaczér vonakodással felelt. Az ifjú lázas
hevületében öngyilkossággal fenyegetőzött, mire kedvese enyelegve
tőrt adott neki: nosza hát! A boldogtalan csakugyan megöli magát,
szeretője pedig ravatalánál megőrűl. Vajjon miben áll Abigél vétsége;
hogy függ össze e játszi tréfálkozással nemezise? Benőének vallotta
magát; de mégsem akart azzal a tartaléktalan, odaadó és mély
szerelemmel, szívvel-szóval az övé lenni, a miben e szenvedélyes,
erőszakos s a viszonyok által is zaklatott természet
megnyugodhatott volna. Szeretője volt; de a nélkül, hogy kedvese
valóját igazán magába fogadta s ahhoz simúlni igyekezett volna.
Még megismerni sem igyekezett eléggé; tréfára vette szörnyű
fenyegetését, melynek beváltásáról természete kezeskedett.
Kedvese halálának képzete, mely egy vészes kitöréssel eléje
idéztetett, nem vette el kedvét a tréfától. Vagy ne lett volna
kedvesévé, vagy ha érdemesnek találta szerelmére, fogadta volna el
minden következését s szerette volna úgy, hogy e szerelem ifjára
nézve legalább a megnyugvás forrása legyen. De ő nem ismerte azt,
a kit neki lett volna kötelessége a világon legjobban ismernie; s
játékot űzött azzal, a mivel nem lett volna szabad, épen Bárczi Benő
irányában nem, tréfálnia. Azt hiszszük, Greguss téved e ballada
magyarázatában s egészen ki van zárva a fölfogás, melyet ő
fejteget, hogy Abigélt szűzi szemérme tartóztatta a vallomástól, s
Bárczi Benő az első nyilatkozatra sürgette. Ezt az első nyilatkozatot
bizonyára nem volt kötelessége kiejteni; de ha egyszer kiejtette, a
másodikat már igen. Ő Benőnek «szép szeretője, titkos arája» volt.
Mint ilyen, kaczérkodott vele. Vallomása:

Bárczi Benőt én meg nem ölte

Tanum az ég s minden seregi!
Hanem a tőrt én adtam neki, –

e vallomás csak külsőképen igaz, csak annyiban, hogy nem akarta

megölni. De a gyilkosság nem vezet-e vissza az ő vétségére? Az
ifjúnak a boldogságukra talán ellenséges körűlmények között csak a
hit volt biztos támasza kedvese szerelmében; mikor a leány ezt is
ingatagnak mutatta, lelke végkép elvesztette egyensúlyát s megölte
magát. Pusztúlása Abigél lelkét terheli a tragikai okozatosság
kapcsolatánál fogva. A költő is vétkesnek akarja mutatni: a holttest
vérzik. Az egyetemes világosan ellene fordúl s a ravatalnál,
tiltakozása daczára, leveri felelőssége. Megőrűlése nemcsak
fájdalmából, hanem lelki vádjából is következik. Dalában, melylyel a
nyilt útcza során lefut, ki is ejti a szót, mely mindent megmagyaráz,
vétségét is, lélekállapotát is.
Ezek az alakok, kik rosszat tesznek nem ugyan jó, de nem is
rossz szándékból, elvezetnek bennünket végre azokhoz, kik a
szenvedély oktalanságával vagy épen öntudatos vakmerőséggel
sértik meg az erkölcsi törvényt, mely az embert ember ellen, a
kicsinyt a nagy ellen, a védtelent a hatalmas ellen, az igazat a
gonosz ellen ótalmazza. Ők már nem az egyetemes egységét
bontva tévednek, mint azok, kik egy ebben foglaltató eszmét
képviselve törnek egy más, szintén jogosúlt s amazzal organikusan
összefüggő hatalom ellen. Vétségök a legenyhébb esetben sem
jóakaratból, hanem tévedésből folyik s határozott bűnben nyilvánúl.
A sértett eszme nem képez egységet a sértő törekvéssel, csak ez
utóbbi van benső összeköttetésben a föltámadó egyén
kiválóságával. Innen nevezi Vischer e formát az egyszerű vétség
tragikumának. Az akarat erkölcsi értékére nézve azonban, mely e
jelenségekben uralkodik, itt is nevezetes különbség van. Ha csak
Othellót vetjük össze Macbethtel, világos lesz előttünk az egész
fokozat, mely a gonosz fenségeig, az erkölcsi törvénynek az egyéni
erő nevében s alapján való tagadásaig halad. Az uralkodó páthoszt
itt tisztán az egyéni táplálja s az tűzi ki czélját. Ily forrásból fakadva,
s ily irányban törekedve, sokszor démoni hatalommá emelkedik. «A
jog, melyen e természetek állanak, mondja Bayer, csak épen az ő
erős akaratuk, erejök felsősége, értelmök sastekintete; nem más az,
mint a ragadozó állat joga prédájára, melyet a természet adott meg
neki hatalmas karmaival, vas izmaival s ugrásának erejével és
biztosságával. Fejöket félelmes, de csodálatraméltó nagyság fénye
övezi.» Az erkölcsi törvény mintha rájok nézve nem léteznék. Ha
titkos intései föl-fölhangzanak is lelkökben, rá sem gondolnak, hogy
elhatározásaikkal és tetteikkel, egészében vagy csak részeiben is,
képviseljék. Ez rájok nézve, természeti határoztatásuknál fogva,
lehetetlen. Czéljokat, melynek semmi általános igazolása nem lehet,
csakis magukra, egyéni különösségökre támaszkodva képviselik s
az akarat hajlíthatatlan erélyével törnek feléje és buknak el. A
jellemnek ez önállóságát Hegel csak ott találja, a hol az istenen-
kivüli, a sajátlagosan emberi teljes érvényre juthat.
E formának talán legvilágosabb, legzavartalanabb képét Macbeth
nyújtja. Benne tisztán az egyén támad föl az egyetemes ellen s sérti
meg az erkölcsi törvény összes hatalmait. Minden jogot lábbal tapod
s ártatlanok vére csepeg kezéről. Föltámadása is magából, egyedűl
magából indúl ki. Föltámadásában nem hivatkozik még erejére sem,
mely kétségkívül különb a Duncanénál, s ha sorsa más viszonyok
között hívja trónra, derekasabban meg tudta volna védelmezni ezt.
Csak nagyravágyását említi, mely ellenállhatatlanúl ragadja a
királygyilkosságra.

Nincs semmi sarkantyúm, e szándokot

Sürgetni: mint a nagyravágy.

A sarkantyú czéljához vezette; trónra jutott, de csakhamar új

gonosztett szüksége áll eléje. A jelen az övé; de a jövő Banquo
maradékainak van igérve. Hatalma nem teljes, hiányzik belőle
valami: a jövő birtoka. Gyilkosokat küld a menekvő Banquora és
Fleancere. Hát értök szennyezte volna be szívét, miattok gyilkolta
volna meg a kegyes Duncant,

Értök csupán! és lelkem örök javát

Azért adám kezébe a gonosznak,
Hogy trónra őket ültessem: a Banquo
Magvát tegyem királyokká! Pokol!

Következnek Macduff «csibéi» s a többiek. Hatalma már teljes lenne,

de nem biztos. Elégületlenség, lázongások, ellenségek fenyegetik és
teszik bizonytalanná. Macbeth egész hentessé sülyed, hogy
vérengzéseivel elnyomjon s megtoroljon minden ellenállást.
Valamennyi elhatárzása, tette, bűne csak magából indúl ki s a maga
érdekére vonatkozik. Mindig ő, és újra ő, egészen addig, míg
semmivé lesz.
Az ily hősök pályájára vonatkozólag tesz Bayer egy fínom és
eszméltető megjegyzést. Az intézmények, melyek gátúl állanak
előttük, gyakorta olyanoknak látszanak, melyek nem alapúlnak
valamely magasabb, objektiv jogrendben, hanem csak puszta
megegyezésen, sőt néha hagyományos előítéleteken. Ily esetekben
a világ korlátoltságát gonoszságuk igazolásaúl tekintik, mely
nemcsak képesíti, hanem mintegy föl is jogosítja őket megillető
helyöknek kiküzdésére. Edmund és Rikhárd példáit hozza föl.
Edmund Lear királyban fattyúgyerek. A társadalom előitélete
nehezedik rá születése miatt. Mindenütt érzi mellőztetését, de érzi
külső és belső fegyverzetének erejét is, melylyel testvérét
kijátszhatja és leverheti s a világot elhallgattathatja. Igaztalansággal
látja magát szemben, melyet, úgy hiszi, csak igaztalansággal
győzhet le.

Természet, istenem vagy: hódolok

Törvényednek. Mért kéne a szokás

E monologban, melylyel Edmund elénk lép, épen úgy föltárja

azonnal lelkét, mint Rikhárd a magáéban, tragédiája elején. Gloster
tragikumának ily irányú fejtegetésénél főleg a korabeli angol
közállapotokra fektet súlyt Bayer. A Yorkok között kétségkívül
Rikhárdnak van legigazabban királyi hivatása. De útjában állanak
bátyja Clarence, s Eduárd fiai: a törvényes örökösödés rendje. E
rend azonban nem uralkodik többé föltétlenűl Angliában. Lázadások,
bitorlók, trónkövetelők, a fehér és piros rózsa véres harczai közt,
gyökeresen fölforgatták és megrendítették. A nemzet rég
hozzászokott, hogy mindig a legvakmerőbbnek hódoljon. Ily
körűlmények között csoda-e, ha Rikhárd még egyszer megkisérli,
hogy érvényt szerezzen az uralkodásra termett erő természeti
jogának? E fejtegetésből ki van feledve egy nevezetes mozzanat,
mely pedig kiválóan alkalmas Bayer tételének támogatására. Ez
Rikhárd rútsága, idétlensége, kit «az eb is megugat, ha elbiczegni
lát.» Az emberek ugyan nem merik idegenkedésöket, természetes
ellenszenvöket leplezetlenűl kimutatni a hatalmas herczeg előtt; de
azért lépten-nyomon érezni kénytelen, hogy nem tartják, nem
tarthatják közéjök valónak. Királyi származása és fényes egyéni
tulajdonai daczára számkivetettje azoknak az örömöknek, melyek
széppé teszik a világot. Gúnynyal emlékszik meg felőlök s az életnek
ama szelídebb módjáról, melyben uralkodnak. A mulató körök, a
tánczzene, a fuvolának kéjelgő szava, a fürge pajkos nymphák
mosolya, melyekkel oly keserűen gúnyolódik, neki nem szólnak
igazán. Hiában is szólnának, sziszegi; utálja léha kéjét e napoknak s
magában az erőt akarja újra úrrá tenni a világon. Más helytt
részletesebben szólottunk róla, hogy mikép.
Jegyezzük még meg, hogy Bayer tétele azoknak a tragikai
alakoknak is, a kikre általában alkalmazható, sohasem vonatkozik
egész pályájára, csak mintegy támadására, kiindúlására. A kedvező,
majdnem csábító viszonyok bátorítják, segítik egy, őket talán
igaztalanúl sújtó szokás, hagyomány vagy előítélet elleni lázadásra.
Küzdelmök azonban csakhamar vad erőszakossággal csap át
általában az erkölcsi törvény, az egyetemes ellen irányúló harczba.
Macbeth és Rikhárd csakúgy gázolnak az ártatlanul kiontott vérben.
A kik nem tudtak ellenökben egy előítéletet tűrni, most az egész
világrendet magukra zúdítják. Egyébiránt általános eszme sohasem
táplálta igazán páthoszukat; tartalma mindig egyéniségök korlátlan
érvényesítésének vágya volt, mely eszmék hangoztatásában
voltakép csak ürügyet keresett. Utóbb is megesik, hogy pályájoknak
végzetes pontjain mintegy igazolni törekszenek magukat. Rikhárdot
a vizió után «tudatának ezerféle nyelve» mind gazembernek vádolja;
de ő siet megfelelni nekik hősi hivatásának fennen hangoztatásával.
A beszéd, melyet katonái előtt tart, nemcsak a csüggedő seregnek,
hanem a maga kételyeinek is szól. Macbethből is kitör a keserv
Dunsinannál, hogy rá nem várnak «az aggkor ékei: szeretet,
engedelmesség, hű tisztelet s igaz barátok»; úgyis hiába kisérlene
meg értök bármit: miért ne követné hát tovább rendületlenűl útját?
Ez igazolásra törekvéssel valósággal nincs más czéljok, mint hogy
bármily laza, bármily hamis megegyezésre jussanak
lelkiismeretökkel s aztán annál korlátlanabbúl, a belső akadálynak
legyőzésével törhessenek az egyetemes ellen. Lehetetlenségre
törnek: jogot szerezni a jogtalanságra. Egy ellenmondással több,
melyen el kell pusztúlniok. Az egyetemes mint természeti és erkölcsi
hatalom támad ellenök. Szenvedélyök a kétségbeesés őrjöngéseig,
az önmegsemmisítésig fokozódik, ama benső, természet-törvény
által meghatározott fejlődésen át, melyet Hegel oly mesterien
magyaráz eszthetikájának a romantikai műformáról szóló
fejezetében. Erkölcsi hatalmak pedig, a megsértett igazság,
szabadság, becsület, kegyelet, azokban, a kik hódolnak nekik, külső
ellenségeket állítanak a gonosz hősök elé s eltiporják őket.
Vesztök után nem ring tovább az eszméknek megindított
hullámzása, mint az erkölcsi összeütközés tragikumánál láttuk.
Egyezkedésre, békűlésre nincs szükség; haláluk után azonnal
helyreáll az egyetemest kifejező rend, melyet csak az ő létök zavart
meg. Az egyetemesnek ő belőlök nincs mit magába fogadnia; semmi
más dolga velök, mint hogy megbuktassa őket. Hősiségöknek marad
emléke; de egyéniségökkel együtt minden törekvésök is, mely
szorosan azt illette, veszendőbe megy.
Annál kevésbbé fogadhatunk el velök, magukkal, kiegyezést. Az
egyetemes, mely általok egész mivoltában, minden erkölcsi
eszméjében megsértetik, úgy hogy az erkölcsi törvénynek ők
egyenes tagadását képezik: nem kegyelmezhet nekik oly
mozzanatok miatt, melyek vagy merő külsőségek, vagy épen
hamisak. A mint a hős sohasem alkuszik vele szemben, hanem
ellene egész valóját mérlegbe veti, úgy kiengesztelésére egész
valójának föl kell áldoztatnia. Nemcsak meg nem nyugtató, hanem
valósággal lázító, érzésünkre nézve, Calderon egy híres autojának,
a Kereszt imádásának (La devocion de la cruz), alapgondolata. A
vallásos életnek egy külsősége van itt győztesen szembeállítva
annak lényegével, az erkölcsi rend egész hatalmával és
igazságosságával. Az ember elkövetheti a legiszonyúbb vétkeket:
ennek daczára egy külső, rá nézve teljesen értelmetlen vallásos
szokáshoz való ragaszkodás meg fogja menteni. Eusebio babonás
tiszteletet tanúsít a kereszt iránt. Atyja eltaszította magától anyját, ki
egy keresztfa alatt szűlte őt, lánytestvérével együtt, mindkettejök
testén egy kereszt anyajegyével. A lánykát az asszony magával
viszi, a fiút elhagyja. Eusebio felnő a kereszt tiszteletében, de nem
nagy dicsőségére. Erőszaktévő, rabló, gyilkos lesz belőle. Többek
között elcsábít egy apáczát; mielőtt azonban meggyalázná, egy
kereszt-jegyet pillant meg testén s megiramodik. Júlia, ki akaratban
már elkövette bűnt, a nélkül, hogy gyönyörét élvezte volna, utána
ered s nem térhet többé vissza a kolostorba. Fogadást tesz, hogy ha
az ég nem akarta befogadni, a poklot is el fogja rémíteni életével. A
vadonban bolyongva, rémtettet rémtettre halmoz. A rablókat
üldözőbe veszi népével Eusebio atyja, s a vad martalócz elesik a
küzködésben. Gyónni akarna; de mire a remete megérkezik,
meghal. Azonban egyszerre fölemelkedik halottaiból s bejelenti,
hogy «bár bűnei számosabbak a fövenynél, tisztelete a kereszt iránt
megmentette istennek trónja előtt». Júlia össze akarja gyűjteni a
szétszórt rablókat, mikor megtudja, hogy Eusebio testvére volt. Hálát
ad a keresztnek, mely a vérbűntől megmentette, s vezeklésre szánja
magát. De atyja le akarja szúrni. Végső kétségbeesésében átkarolja
a keresztet, segítségért folyamodik hozzá s kedveért azonnal meg is
történik a csoda. A feszület felszáll vele a magasba. Ki
nyugodhatnék bele e megoldásba? A kereszt Krisztus tanai
teljességének jelképe, a milyennek ugyancsak Calderonnál, a
Kereszt felmagasztalásában (La exaltacion de la cruz) találjuk, a hol
győzelme a pogány bálványimádás, erőszakosság, szentségtörés és
bűbájosság fölött, fölemeli lelkünket. Jelképe az isteni irgalomnak.
Jelentőségét az összeköttetés adja, melyet képvisel az isteni és
emberi közt, de nem az istentől elfordúlt, hanem az istenhez fordúló
emberi közt. Ha ez az összeköttetés merőben hiányzik, imádása
csak babona, melynek semmi köze az egyetemeshez, mely senkit
meg nem tarthat.

A természeti és erkölcsi törvény mint

sértett.

Az egyetemesben foglaltató természeti és erkölcsi törvény

viszonyáról már szóltunk, mielőtt külön-külön szemügyre vettük
volna őket. Az egyetemesről szóló fejtegetésünk záradékaúl
vizsgáljuk még ezt oly támadásokkal szemközt, melyek úgy
természeti mint erkölcsi mivoltában megsértik.
Az erkölcsi összeütközés tragikuma alá tartozó jelenségek
némelyikéről azt mondtuk, hogy tragikai vétségök az egyetemest
különösen mint egységest, mint egészet illeti. Sértik annyiban, a
mennyiben egységéből kiszakítanak bizonyos eszméket, hogy más,
szintannyira vagy még inkább jogosúlt eszmék ellen érvényesítsék.
Ők az egyetemes körének úgy szólván egész voltát illetik, míg azok,
a kikhez most fordulunk, az egyetemesnek egész körét sértik. Azok
megbontják egységét, ezek, mindenestűl megtagadva, szállanak
szembe vele. A fejlődés nevezetesebb fokozatai ezek: Antigone úgy
tesz eleget egy természeti és erkölcsi kötelességének, hogy megsért
vele egy másik erkölcsi hatalmat; Rikhárd, természeti adományaira
támaszkodva, de ezeket elégségeseknek is tartva czéljára, önzése
sugallatából tör általában az erkölcsi törvény ellen; Faust, Kain s az
ő körükbe tartozó hősök, úgy törnek a végtelenre, hogy az életnek
természeti és erkölcsi korlátait egyaránt lerontani igyekeznek. Az
egyetemesnek egész körét megsértik, mind a benne foglaltató
hatalmakat, a mennyiben a lét biztosító és megnyugtató törvényein,
