ISO IntegRater™ Overview

Introduction
ISO IntegRater™ is an electronic delivery mechanism that increases the speed, accuracy,
and ease of loading ISO commercial lines advisory loss cost and rating factor data into
your rating and policy-issuance systems or actuarial spreadsheets.

Prospective updates will include rating data from approved filing circulars, which you
will be able to download through ISOnetSM. This product is designed to be used in
conjunction with the CLM.

Loss costs and rating factors contained in the text of the CLM or displayed in text in a
table are not always included. Please refer to the CLM for complete information on rules,
loss costs, and rating factors.

The ISOnet website provides a search utility allowing selection of the information you
need. You can select data by filing identification number and state; circular number;
release date and line(s) of business; or line of business and state, table number, and
implementation date range. ISO IntegRater uses a tab-delimited format that integrates
easily into Microsoft® Excel to deliver the information.

ISO IntegRater contains the latest approved rating information released in circulars as of
the following dates for each line of business:
• commercial general liability: June 2001
• commercial property: November 2001
• commercial package: December 2002
• businessowners: on or after July 2002 (Please note that only the new
businessowners 7/02 program is included. Loss costs and rating factors effective
prior to 7/02 are not included.)
• commercial auto: July 2002
• crime and fidelity: October 2005
• commercial inland marine: December 2005

We update ISO IntegRater by table. If a table displayed in the CLM has not been updated
since 1996, then the 1996 table would be in ISO IntegRater.

System requirements
ISO IntegRater is a data product, not a software application. Your choice in how you
process the data will determine your system requirements to a large extent. You will
decide:
• which application to use to process the data
• how your application will process the data
• with your initial order and with every Internet update, whether you want a single
file or multiple smaller files

1
We deliver the data as compressed ZIP files. You need WinZip software to unzip them.
You will get the same data with either the single or multiple delivery option. Your choice
will determine the size of the individual files you receive, which may affect your system
requirements.

The amount of data to which you will have access will grow over time. This amount will
increase as ISO IntegRater updates the rating information. When you store the data into
another format, such as Excel, the amount of space needed is much greater.

Product support
The ISO Help Desk provides customer support. The Help Desk is available to answer any
questions you may have regarding ISO IntegRater. Support is available Monday through
Friday from 7:00 a.m. to midnight Eastern time. The toll-free telephone number is 1-800-
888-4476.

Setting up your PC for TAB files

ISO IntegRater delivers files with tab-delimited values. The best way to view the
information is to import data into a database or a spreadsheet, such as Microsoft Excel or
Access. Microsoft Notepad, WordPad, or other word processing applications will not
open the files with the data formatted as text or with the data in columns. See below for
Microsoft Excel or Access instructions.

Opening TAB files in Microsoft Excel

You can set your system to always open TAB files using Microsoft Excel as follows:
1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. On the Menu bar, click Tools and select Folder Options.
3. Click the File Types tab.
4. If TAB file is listed in Registered file types, scroll down to select TAB File and
click Edit. Then click Edit on the Edit File Type screen. Skip to step 7.
5. If TAB file is not listed in Registered file types, click New.
6. Next to File Extension, enter TAB. Then click OK.
7. Click Change.
8. Click the “Select a program from a list” radio button then click OK.
9. Locate Microsoft Office Excel and click on it, making sure “to select Always use
the selected program to open this kind of file,” then click OK.
10. Click Close.
For help on any item, click the ? at the top of the dialog box and then click on the item.

2
Importing TAB files into Microsoft Access
ISO IntegRater delivers files with tab-delimited values. As stated above, one of the best
ways to view this information is to import the data into a database. If you decide to use
Microsoft Access, use the following instructions to import TAB files:
• If you want to create a new database, open Microsoft Access and click File, New
Database. Then select Blank Database and click OK.
• Select a folder on your hard drive where you would like to store your database.
Create a file name for your database (default name is db1.mdb). Then click
Create.
• Once the database is created, or after you have opened an existing database, click
External Data, Text File. Go to the location of the extracted TAB file and
highlight file (file can be set to open using Microsoft Excel as explained in the
“Opening TAB Files in Microsoft Excel” section). Click open and then click OK.

The Access Import Text Wizard contains five windows. The following describes the
contents of each window.

Window 1: Access Import Text Wizard allows users to indicate the format,
delimited or fixed-width, that correctly describes the imported data. ISO
IntegRater delivers the data in a tab-delimited format.
• Select Delimited.
• Click Next.

Window 2: When indicated that the imported file is delimited, the second window
displayed by the Wizard asks the user to provide more information about the
setup of the imported field:
• Specify the type of delimiter
• Specify whether the first row contains a header
• Specify whether a text qualifier is used in the input file
• In Choose the delimiter that separates your field select TAB.
• Click on the box in front of First Row Contains Field Names so a check
mark is displayed.
• Next to Text qualifier indicate none.
• Click Next.

Window 3: Access Import Text Wizard allows users to specify information about
each field. ISO IntegRater requires the information when creating the table.
Specifically, the application needs to know:
• the data type of each field
• whether the field is to be indexed
• whether any fields are skipped when the table is created

When dealing with tables, the Import Wizard assumes all the data in a single
column pertains to a single attribute associated with every row in the given table.
Based on that assumption, the Import Wizard guesses at the characteristics of the
fields.
3
We designed the ISO IntegRater data file so that any of the placeholder columns
can hold different types of classification information. It can cause the Import
Wizard to guess incorrectly about field characteristics.

Because you may be importing data from multiple CLM tables at one time, we
recommend you specify that the placeholder keys and Data 1 are text fields to
avoid problems with data types. In addition, we recommend you not rely on the
Wizard to add indexes.
• Click on the Advanced button and change the values in the Data type
column for Keys 1–10 and Data 1 to text. Change the values in the
Indexed column to No.
• Click OK.
• Click Next.

Window 4: Access Import Text Wizard allows users to define a primary key for
the table.
• Choose one of the three selections.
• Click Next.

Window 5: Access Import Text Wizard allows you to select a table name for the
imported data.
• In Import to Table, type in the name of your table.
• Click Finish.

Web Page Format

Links to the Alert Subscription, "Open Files in Excel", My Downloads, and Online Help,
appear in a column on the left margin.

My Downloads displays all of your successful data requests for the day and their status. ISO
IntegRater creates a download link for all completed requests that generate data.

Downloading and opening ISO IntegRater data

You will obtain your updates through ISOnet. When you see an approval circular with
data you need to use, or if you just need to look up loss costs or relativities, you will
logon to ISOnet. (See the ISOnet IntegRater Search and Delivery Section for more
information.)
Upon performing a search on the ISO IntegRater search screen, the system will analyze
how much of the data matches your search criteria and how much of the requested data
you are entitled to download.

Immediately following your search, you will be informed:

• if there is no matching data
• if you are not entitled to all of the matching data
• if the search was successful and:
o if you are entitled to all of the data
o if you are entitled to only some of the matching data

4
In cases where ISO IntegRater returns data, the My Downloads page appears. The My
Downloads page will contain a queue of all successful searches you submitted that day.
Each successful search displays the search criteria, the time of the search, and the status.
A Download link appears after the search displays status.

While on the My Downloads page, you can download any data available. You may
download your results one at a time or wait until multiple searches are complete and
download several sets of results at once.

The My Downloads page will refresh every minute. To get the latest status more
frequently, you can click a refresh button displayed on the page or the refresh button on
your toolbar.

To return to the search page from the My Downloads page, you can click the new search
button, click on the link to home, or click on a link to edit any of the previously submitted
search criteria.

Requests for large amounts of data may take longer because there will be a limit on the
resources devoted to a single request within a period of time.

You can submit multiple requests at one time and you will not have to wait for each
request to finish before proceeding to the next request. You can move on while a request
is still in progress and then download all of the data returned.

You won’t see any actual search results or data on the screen in ISOnet. There will be a
link to download the zipped files to your PC. The download link will contain the
following files:
• Control report file: Provides the date, time, search criteria, and number
of records for the download
• Table definition file: Lists number, name, country, and line of business for each
type of table ISO IntegRater delivers, as well as explanations of content in the
key columns of the data files; also indicates if the table format is in common use
• Data file(s): Contains loss costs and rating factors

Download guidelines
For ease of use, we recommend the following guidelines for using the ISOnet download
feature:
• Create an ISOnet folder on your computer to use as your download destination.
You may find it useful to create subfolders within your ISOnet folder to help you
separate individual downloads.
• Enter the applicable search information in the ISOnet search screen then click on
the Search button.
• To download ISO IntegRater data, use the My Downloads screen. The primary
information on the page is a list of all of your successful data requests on a single
day. Preliminary messages published immediately after a search is submitted also
appear.
5
• In the list of searches, each successful search will include the time of the search,
the search criteria, and the status. The status will be “in progress” or “complete.”
As each search completes, the status will change accordingly and a download
link will appear.
• When you click on a download link:
o The File Download panel will be displayed.
o Select Save this program to disk and click OK.
o The Save As panel will be displayed.
o Select the drive, directory, and file name for receiving the document and
click on Save to download.

We deliver the data as compressed ZIP files. You need to obtain software to unzip the
files.

File names
The default file names for the zipped files include the following information:
• line of business
• file type: ZIP file
• date and time the file is downloaded

An example of a default file name: GL_ZIPFILE_020108123322PM.zip.

ISO IntegRater delivers the data and table definitions files as TAB files. The control
report is a TXT file.

The default file names for the unzipped files (one file delivery) include the following
information:
• line of business
• type of information: data, table definition, or control report
• date and time the file is downloaded

An example of a default file name: GL_Data_020108123322PM.tab or

GL_Control_Report_020108123322PM.txt.

The default file names for unzipped TAB data files* (multiple files delivery) include the
following information:
• line of business
• state
• table number
• effective date
• date and time the file is downloaded

An example of a default file name: GL_NY_56-B-2_1-1-08_020108123322PM.tab.

*Multiple-file delivery will also produce a control report and table definition file in
single-file delivery format.

6
You may choose to retain those file names or rename the files for easier reference.
However, we suggest choosing unique names to avoid inadvertently overwriting a file
previously received.

Viewing and extracting data from zipped files

The data downloaded from ISO IntegRater is in Zip format. You need to obtain software
to unzip the files.

When you use third-party software to view the data before it is extracted, we recommend
you choose a method that will open the TAB files with the associated application of your
choice. Furthermore, if you plan to use Excel to view the TAB file data, we recommend
you associate the TAB files with the utility we have provided, “OpenFilesInExcel.” By
doing so, the formatting we provided will be preserved.

When you extract the data files from the zipped file, you can choose where you’d like to
place the extracted files.

Alternate method for opening files

If you did not set up your PC to always open the TAB files with a specific application as
described above, you may choose to open the ISO IntegRater TAB files as follows:
1. In Windows Explorer, go to the location of the extracted TAB files from above.
2. Double-click on the TAB file you wish to open.
3. If prompted, choose the program you want to use to open the file (Microsoft
Excel, Notepad, or WordPad).
4. If you want a specific program to always open the TAB files from Windows
Explorer, check Always use this program to open this file. However, you
should refer to the “Setting Up PC for TAB Files” section above for further
details.
5. Click OK.

Tip: Large files – Attempting to download large files from ISOnet may result in long
wait times and possible disconnects. For example, trying to download an experience
review filing series for all states would generate a large amount of data. We suggest you
download only as much as you can work on in one morning or afternoon. If you need a
large database download, we can arrange to send you a CD. However, the CD cannot be
customized; it will contain all the data to which you are entitled.

ISO IntegRater record layouts

Here is an example of how ISO IntegRater organizes the data it delivers via ISOnet and
on CD. As stated in Section 1, a file downloaded to your PC will contain three files: a
control report file, a table definition file, and a data file. The following section will
illustrate the control report, data file, and table definition file for a single record in the
OCC(LC) table in relation to the same table in the Commercial Lines Manual.

7
Below is a copy of how the loss cost table OCC (LC) would look in the CLM. We
revised the table for demonstration purposes; it displays only one record.

Please note that the use of a dash or hyphen as a value in a key field in a row of data
indicates that the particular key field definition (attribute) doesn’t apply to that particular
row of data in the table.

Manipulating the data

File format and information
The ISO IntegRater file layout will include 13 initial generic keys contained
in all ISO IntegRater files you receive, and two final data keys (statistical
codes and rating information) will appear for every line of business.
Between the generic keys and the data keys, placeholder keys contain all
other relevant data specific to each table. The number of placeholder keys
will vary by line of business and will reflect the maximum number of keys
needed for any table in that line of business. A table definition file will
define those fields.

ISO or company column: The company column has been included so that you can
overlay the ISO loss costs or factors with your company rates or factors, change ISO in
that column to your company name, and use the same table layout in conjunction with
your rating or policy-issuance system. By doing so, you can maintain the original ISO
information, as well as your own company-specific information, in one database.
9
State column: We won’t use a value of MU (multistate) in the state column. Instead,
we’ll load individual state records for each state that has adopted the multistate factors or
loss costs as of that date. That will make your search criteria easier to write.

Each row will contain only one loss cost or rating factor.

Working with the data

After loading the data into Excel, you may choose to make adjustments or rearrange the
data. Here are some examples of company-specific modifications you may choose to
make:
• modify the headings and other information
• select only certain information from the table for a specific project or to load to a
specific system
• copy and paste the data into another spreadsheet for actuarial work
• add in your company multipliers
• develop a utility to load the data to another system
• alter your rating system to look like our database

10
ISOnet IntegRater search and delivery
ISOnet search screen
ISOnet uses a single screen for the submission of all data requests. Upon entering your
search information, a separate page named My Downloads will deliver the data.

You cannot view any data directly on ISOnet.

The four search options are:

• Option 1: Filing ID search
• Option 2: Circular number search
• Option 3: Release date search
• Option 4: Line of business search

In addition, you must choose whether you want to receive the data in one file or in
multiple files by table.

Option 1: Filing ID search

1. Option 1 searches are based on filing ID and jurisdiction(s).
2. Enter the ISO filing designation number in the format XX-YYYY-ID# or XX-
YY-ID#, where:
• XX should be the two-character line of business acronym. For example, GL
for General Liability or CA for Commercial Auto.
• YYYY or YY should be the four- or two-digit year. Prior to the year 2000,
filing designation numbers included a two-digit year.
• ID# should be entered exactly as it is shown on the filing or reference circular
(for example: GL-2000-BGL1; CA-99-BRLA1).

3. Select one state, multiple states, or the Select All option from the list. To select
more than one state, you should hold down the Ctrl key while selecting each one.
If you choose the All States option, you should not select any individual
jurisdictions.
The search lists all jurisdictions, even if not applicable to a line of business. If you
select the All States option, this will retrieve ISO data for all states applicable for
that line of business.
4. Select whether you want to download the information as one file or multiple files
(by table), and click Search.
5. Refer to “Downloading and opening ISO IntegRater data” in this user guide for
information on downloading, naming, and opening the file.
6. The search function will provide you with all rating data associated with that
particular filing ID and jurisdiction(s). If you do not receive the data but receive a
message instead, refer to the “Customer Notices and Error Messages” section for
an explanation.

11
Option 2: Circular number search
1. Option 2 searches are based on circular number.
2. Enter the circular number in the format LI-XX-YYYY-### or LI-XX-YY-###
where:
• XX is the two-character line of business acronym
(for example, GL for general liability and CA for commercial auto)
• YYYY or YY is the four- or two-digit year
(Prior to the year 1998, circular numbers included a two-digit year, for
example: LI-GL-2000-214 or LI-CF-97-166)
You may use only final disposition circular numbers found as links on Notice to
Manualholders in ISOnet Commercial Lines Manual Information in your circular
number searches. All other circular numbers will not retrieve any data.
3. Select whether you want to download the information as one file or multiple files
(by table), and click Search.
4. Refer to “Downloading and opening ISO IntegRater data” for information on
downloading, naming, and opening the file.
5. The search function will provide all rating data included in that particular circular.
If you do not receive the data but receive a message instead, refer to the
“Customer Notices and Error Messages” section for an explanation.

Option 3: Release date search

1. Option 3 searches are based on release date of rating data and line(s) of business.
2. For month, day, and year, click the down arrow and make the applicable
selection. Month and year selections are mandatory; the selection of a day value is
optional.
3. Use any date prior to today. If you retrieve data for today’s date, you may end up
with incomplete files.
4. Select one line of business, multiple lines of business, or the All Lines option
from the list. To select more than one line of business, you should hold down the
Ctrl key while selecting each one.
5. Select whether you want the information downloaded as one file or multiple files
(by table), and click Search.
6. Refer to “Downloading and opening ISO IntegRater data” for information on
downloading, naming, and opening the file.
7. The search function will provide all rating data that it added to the ISO database
on that date. If you do not receive the data but receive a message instead, refer to
“Customer Notices and Error Messages” for an explanation.

Tip: Updates to the ISO IntegRater database — We strive to update ISO IntegRater
with the newest information as quickly as possible. However, there may be a delay
between the date you receive a circular announcing approval of a filing and the
availability of that data in ISO IntegRater. If we have not yet distributed the loss costs
or rating factors, please try again in a couple of days. Likewise, if you selected Option
3 from the selection panel and receive no data, please try another date. Release dates
are independent of filing, circular, or effective dates.

12
Option 4: Line of business search
1. Option 4 searches are by line of business and jurisdiction.
2. For line of business and jurisdiction, click the down arrow and make the
applicable selection. You must make a selection for each; however, you may only
choose one line of business and one jurisdiction for each search.
3. The search lists all jurisdictions, even if not applicable to a line of business.
• You may also narrow your search with either or both of the following options:
• You may select one or multiple table numbers from the drop-down list. To
select more than one table, you should hold down the Ctrl key while selecting
each one. For names related to the table numbers, refer to the Commercial
Lines Manual.
• You may select the date and time period from the following: “As Of,” “On or
Before,” “On or After,” “Effective Date Equal to Specified Date,” or
“Expiration Date Equal to Specified Date.” For month, day, year, and range,
click the down arrow and make the applicable selection.
4. Select whether you want the information downloaded as one file or multiple files
(by table), and click Search.
5. Refer to “Downloading and opening ISO IntegRater data” for information on
downloading, naming, and opening the file.
6. The search function will provide all rating data associated with that particular line
of business and jurisdiction. In addition:
• If you select specific table(s), the rating data will include only those tables for
the jurisdiction and line of business selected.
• If you enter a date range, the search function will provide all rating data
associated with that particular line of business and jurisdiction for the date
range entered.
• If you enter specific table(s) and a date range, the rating data will include only
those tables based on the date range for the jurisdiction and line of business
selected.
• If you do not receive the data but receive a message instead, refer to
“Customer Notices and Error Messages” for an explanation.

Tip: Locating circular and filing numbers – You can use ISO IntegRater to locate
specific circular or filing numbers. If you know the state and approximate date when
the change occurred, you can parse the database and find the circular or filing number
you need.

13
My Downloads page

ISO IntegRater evaluates each request and puts requests that will generate data into a
queue for processing. Each request that generates data triggers the display of the My
Downloads page. If you are only partially entitled to all of the data requested, the partial
entitlement message will appear on the My Downloads page immediately after you
submit your request.

If your search criteria does not match any data in ISO IntegRater, or if you are not
entitled to any of the data you requested, you will not see the My Downloads page —
only a message describing the result of your request.

Using the My Downloads page

There are two ways to access the My Downloads page from the ISO IntegRater search
page: search for data or click on My Downloads in the left margin.

There are three ways to return to the ISO IntegRater search page from the My Downloads
page: click the New Search button, click on an Edit Search button next to a previous
search, or click on the home link in the left margin.

Clicking the Edit Search button causes the ISO IntegRater search page to return the
search criteria matching those listed for the selected search.

The My Downloads page refreshes automatically every minute. To get the latest status,
click the Refresh button on the My Downloads page or in your toolbar.

The results of searches will remain in the queue set up for each user until the end of the
day. That means the user can download once after each search or download many times
after many searches.

Customer notices and error messages

With customer notices and error messages we want to make a distinction between system
errors and conditions that affect only the content returned by specific searches. Our
technical staff investigates system errors. Our customer service staff and authors of ISO
IntegRater content investigate questions about returned content.

If you encounter any cases where the explanation in a customer notice does not match
what you believe to be accurate, please contact us and we will investigate.

We use error codes to help in the identification of the type of error diagnosed by the
system. We rely solely on the description in the error message to specify the type of error.

By taking that approach, we plan to generate a unique error code each time the system
diagnoses an error. That will establish the state of the system when the problem occurs.
