ASSESSMENT 3

40 Marks

This assessment consists of five (5) pages.


Instructions:

1) The aim of this assessment is to test your knowledge on the key learning outcomes of this
module.
2) You need to answer all the questions.
3) Assessments may be typed using Arial font size 12.
4) Although it is strongly suggested that you type your responses to this assessment, you may
submit handwritten assessments. Please write legibly so that it is possible to read your
assessment answers. Scan all the pages into one PDF document and submit it online.
5) Save your answer file as “MNO3704_Assessment_3_Studentnumber_Surname”.
6) Only PDF format submissions are accepted on the submissions portal. Ensure that only
one document is uploaded as the system only accepts one document and not individual page
submissions.
7) Ensure that you submit the correct assessment. Check to see that you attach your answers
to this assessment and not the question paper, a past assessment, an assessment from
another module, or any other documents in error.
8) You are not required to answer your assessment using this template. Should you elect to
type your own assessment or to submit a handwritten submission please ensure that you
number your answers correctly.
9) All submissions should be clear and legible. Ensure that scanned documents are not blurred.
10) It is important to include in-text citations and a list of references as part of the assessment,
even if you use the study guide and prescribed textbook. Each additional source that you
may be required to consult, should also be referenced. Each question therefore needs to be
referenced with the question. For example, provide the source for Question 1 with question
1 and so forth. You will be required to add this to your reference list at the end of your

assessment. Note that 2 marks will be deducted per question that has not been duly cited
or referenced.
11) Referencing should be done according to the Harvard referencing method. An example of
the Harvard Referencing method is included in the Additional Resources folder on myUnisa.
Failure to submit a reference list with this assessment will result in a deduction of 5 marks.
12) Do not copy directly from any source (including your study guide) as Unisa’s plagiarism policy
is applicable to this assessment. Plagiarism will not be allowed and may result in
disciplinary action if detected.
13) The use of AI/ChatGPT is not permitted to complete this assessment.
14) Take note of the mark allocation for each question. This will give you an indication of the
number of facts that should be discussed. Make sure that each question and sub-questions
are clearly numbered.
15) The assessments will be returned to you online once marked and finalised and the
assignments department will inform you of your results.
16) Please ensure that you have submitted a signed declaration.
17) Please ensure that your PDF document is NOT encrypted to a “secured” mode or password
protected or infected by any virus. Any documents that cannot be opened by markers will be
awarded a mark of 0%.

ASSESSMENT IS ALLOWED. Your lecturer may not accept any emailed assessments.

SECTION B: HOUSEHOLD WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES

Go to Google Scholar and download the prescribed article for this assignment: Viljoen,
J.M.M., Schenck, C.J., Volschenk, L., Blaauw, P.F. & Grobler, L. 2021. Household Waste
Management Practices and Challenges in a Rural Remote Town in the Hantam Municipality
in the Northern Cape, South Africa. Sustainability, 13(11), 5903. Read through the article and
use the information along with learning unit 8 in your study guide and the applicable chapters
in your prescribed book to answer the following questions. Remember to reference all the
sources you consult, even if it is the article, your study guide or your prescribed textbook.

Identify the challenges that are faced, by not only local government, but also households with
regards to waste management in South Africa with specific reference to the article.

Many of the respondents in the study have raised their concerns about dumping and landfill
sites in and around their communities. Explain the general conditions required for the safe
disposal of waste on a landfill. (Remember to reference the sources you consult).

Question 4 [10]

It is evident from the article that waste management in South Africa presents many challenges
in terms of the effects on the environment and on society as a whole. Despite the increased
awareness regarding the reduction of waste in communities, the degree of waste generation
has continued to grow. Make some recommendations to industry that can be taken into
account to promote waste minimisation. (Remember to reference the sources you consult).
