Introduction
How to Complete the Exercises in this Guide
This guide offers a series of exercises that will teach you how to build a functional Appian
application, step by step. Use this guide to support your learning throughout the Appian
Developer online learning path.

To understand specific Appian concepts and features, we recommend that you first take our
online courses (access our curriculum at academy.appian.com) and then complete the
associated step-by-step exercises before moving to the next course in the path.

What Will I Build?


You will build the Step-by-Step Acme Auto (SA) application. This application automates the
process of registering a new vehicle in the fleet for the fictional company Acme Automobile, Inc.
The application is designed for three personas: registrars, supervisors, and mechanics.
Registrars use the SA application to add new vehicles to the fleet, supervisors review and
approve new vehicles, and all three employee groups can request maintenance and keep
records for each maintenance project. You will build the design objects and assemble them into
a user-friendly site that registrars, supervisors, and mechanics will use to add and approve
vehicles and to access fleet-related reports.

You will build most objects in this exercise. However, there will be some selected data and
objects that come from the existing Acme Automobile Reference Application (AA). You can also
use the Acme Auto Solution Application (AS) as a reference tool. Review this application to see
how specific objects or fields are configured, or test the app to see how the features work from
a business user’s perspective. You can find these apps in Appian Community Edition. You will
learn how to access an environment in this first step-by-step exercise.

How Can I Practice?


You should practice using Appian Community Edition. This free, community Appian resource
comes with the pre-built AS application that you can reference while building your own version.

Appian Version
Appian Community Edition is on the latest Appian version. If you are following Step-by-Step
exercises from a previous Appian version, download the latest version from academy.appian.com.

Naming Conventions
When you register for Appian Community Edition, you gain access to a workspace, which is your
personal area within the community environment. When your workspace has been assigned,
you will receive a confirmation email with a workspace ID.

Use this workspace ID when creating new applications and objects. Otherwise, you could run
into naming conflicts with objects created by other users. Pre-loaded apps in your workspace

also include the workspace ID. In the example below, the application prefix for the Acme Auto
Solution app is W0000AS. So, the workspace identifier is W0000, which would be included in
any new app’s prefix.

App Catalog
The App Catalog contains the most recent versions of pre-built apps available in Appian
Community Edition. To go to the App Catalog, on Community Edition Home, click BROWSE
APP CATALOG.

To determine if you have the latest versions of the AA and AS apps, select the app in the list
and review the last updated date. If this date is later than when you registered for Appian
Community Edition, you should deploy a new version. If you recently received your workspace,
you likely have the latest versions.

Save Often
Appian does not automatically save updates, so save your objects frequently.

Exercise 1: Welcome to the Appian Developer


Learning Path
Access Appian Community Edition
The exercises are developed for Appian Community Edition. Once you register, you will have
access to your own Appian workspace. The workspace comes with preloaded objects that you
will need as you complete these steps.

Follow the steps below to register:

1. Go to Appian Community Edition.

2. Sign in with your Appian Community credentials.

3. Select a region, then complete the onboarding questions and acknowledgement. When
your workspace has been assigned, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

Keep in mind that this is a community environment not suitable for production workloads or
sensitive information.
