Bed Shampooing

PREPARATION
∙ Prepare soap or shampoo
solution.
∙ Fill pitcher with water.

∙ Bring equipment to bedside and


arrange them conveniently on the
table.

PREPARATION OF PATIENT
1. Explain to patient what you are
going to do.

2. Close windows and screen bed.

3. Move bedside table away from head


of bed.

4. Remove pillows.

5. Have patient lie diagonally


across bed with head near the
edge of bed.

6. Place a bath towel or folded blanket


under patient’s neck.

7. Place a bath towel under


patient’s head.

8. Make rubber sheet into


improvised Kelly pad and place it
under patient’s head.

9. Place pail on chair lined with


paper and adjust through in
place.

10. Comb hair and massage scalp.


11. Protect ears with cotton balls and
eyes with wash cloth.

12. Pour water slowly and carefully on


scalp and hair.

13. Pour solution or shampoo


slowly and carefully on scalp
and massage gently.

14. Rinse hair with warm water and


repeat as often as
necessary.

15. Do final rinsing with cold water.

16. Squeeze out excess water from hair


and remove ear plug.

17. Pull rubber sheet, fold carefully and


place on the tray.

18. Rub hair with towel until hair is partly


dry.

19. Replace pillow protected with dry


towel.

20. Comb patient’s hair.

21. Straighten beddings and make


patient comfortable.

22. Tidy the unit.

AFTER CARE EQUIPMENT


1. Bring equipment to the utility
room. Clean and return to
proper places.
2. Wash and rinse patient’s comb and
return to bedside.

CHARTING
1. Time shampoo was given.
2. Reaction of patient.
