THE

MENSTRUAL CYCLE
MENSTRUAL CYCLE
▪ Average of a menstrual cycle may last up to 28 days, although the
length of each stage and the duration of the cycle itself may differ
between women.
▪ The following are the 4 phase of menstrual cycle:
1. Menstruation phase
2. Proliferation phase
3. Ovulation phase
4. Secretory phase
Menstruation phase
▪Menstruation is a process that occurs in most females
approximately once every month from puberty until menopause,
except during pregnancy. During menstruation, the uterine lining
breaks down, shedding blood and other material out of the
vagina.
▪This occurs as a result of sometimes painful contraction of smooth
muscles in the uterine wall, tearing the blood vessels and pushing
blood out of the uterus and into vagina, where it can exit the
body.
▪ Menstruation may last about 3 to 5 days
▪ MENARCHE – first period. Happens during 12 to 13 year
old or some girls may have it as early as 9 years old and
as late as 16.
▪ MENOPAUSE – last period. Happens during the age of
51 to 52 or some woman may reach up to 60 years old.
▪ During this period, the levels of
FSH in the blood slowly
increase as the anterior
pituitary gland releases it in
higher concentrations.
▪ The release of FSH helps to
develop Graafian follicles and
the immature egg in the ovary
to develop.
PROLIFERATION PHASE

▪ Occur approximately between days 6 and 14

after the period.
▪ The level of FSH rise during this stage which
cause one of the follicles in an ovary to mature.
▪ During this phase there is an increase in
estrogen, which is released by the developing
Graafian follicle.
▪ The increase in the level of estrogen stimulates
the thickening of the uterine lining.
OVULATION PHASE

▪Ovulation occurs on day 14.

▪During ovulation estrogen level is at its
peak, causing FSH to drop and the LH to
increase.
▪LH hormone helps to release mature
egg is release from the ovary. The
mature egg will travel out of the ovary
and into fallopian tube, then to the
uterus.
▪ From about 5 days leading up to ovulation, including the day of
ovulation is your fertile period.
▪ Once release from the ovary the egg cell can only survive up to
24 hours
▪ The graafian follicle in which the egg cell was released remains
in the ovary and transform into new structure called the corpus
luteum.
▪ Corpus luteum release the hormone progesterone.
SECRETORY PHASE

• Secretory phase is from days 14 to 28, and the

process may differ depending on whether or not an
egg cell has been fertilized.
• If the egg cell is fertilized, it forms zygote. The
zygote will develop to an embryo and implants in
the lining of the uterus, the corpus luteum
continues to produce progesterone, which
maintains the thickened lining of the uterus
• If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum
dies, progesterone levels drop, the uterus lining
sheds and the period begins again.
