Solving Problems with Polynomials

Sally has 21 coins in nickels Let x = number of nickels.
and dimes. Their total value 21 – x = number of dimes
is $1.75. How many of each 5x + 10 (21 – x) = 175
coin does she have? value of value of total value
nickels dimes in cents
5x + 210 – 10x = 175
210 – 5x = 175

5x = –35
x=7
There are 7 nickels and 14 dimes.

1. Tim bought some 25¢ and some 29¢ stamps. He paid $7.60 for 28 stamps. How many
of each type of stamp did he buy?

2. Tickets for the school concert were $3 and $2. If 245 tickets were sold for a total of $630,
how much of each kind were sold?

3. David has 11 coins, some quarters and some dimes. If the coins have a value of $1.55,
how many of each kind are there?

4. Subtract 6x 2 – 3xy + y 2 from 8x 2 + 5xy – y 2 .

5. From 6ab – 2ac + 5bc, take 10ab – 2bc + 3ac.

6. Subtract x 2 – y 2 – z 2 from the sum of 3x 2 + 2y 2 + z 2 and 4x 2 + 3y 2 – 5z 2 .

7. Find the perimeter of a rectangle if its length is (4c + 7) units and its width is (c – 3)
units.

8. Which has the greater area, a square with sides each (x + 2) units long or a rectangle
with length (x + 4) units and width x units?

9x – 2 = 3x + 4
6x – 2 = 4
6x = 6

1. 5 (x + 2) – 4 (x – 1) = 24

2. 2 (y – 5) – (y + 6) = –4

3. 2 (3n – 1) – (n + 6) = 7

4. 2 (2b + 7) + 2 (1 + 2b) = 20

5. (4x – 1) – (2x + 2) = x + 5

6. 2 (y + 1) + 3 (y – 1) = 9

7. (x + 1) (x + 5) = (x + 2) (x + 3)

8. –
4r + 3 (1 – 2r) = 3 (5 – 2r)

9. (y + 12) (y – 3) = y (y + 5) + 24

10. (2x – 3) (2x – 1) = (x – 2) (4x + 3)

11. (x – x 2 ) – (2x 2 + x – 1) = 5 + 2x – 3x 2

12. t (t – 2) + 2 (2t – 1) = t2 + 4

13. (w + 4) (w + 14) – w (w + 10) = 216

14. (2x + 1)2 – (2x – 1)2 = (x + 6)2 – x 2
