Problem set 4
1. Millennials
1) In general millennials have high expectations. They want to work few hours and have
a big salary. They think that their job will adapt to them not that they will have to
adapt to their job, because they think that they could combine perfectly social and
professional life. Millennials also think that they could easily grow up in their position.
Therefore, they imagine that they could do everything they want to. Millennials will
have to realize what is the reality, and which are the demands of the market labour,
and they will have to adapt to this market. So, the expectations that they have won’t
be fulfilled. Brands to manage these expectations in the sort-term (when it will still be
older generations, so their interests will not be considered) could imply systems to
evaluate their workers in order to motivate them every day. In the long term, firms will
have to adapt to this generation if they want that those people work for the firm. The
companies will have to promise to this people a higher promotions and salaries.
2) Millennials have unrealistic expectations, so one of their advantages are that they are
very ambitious. So that will make them achieve what they want and be more
competitive. Moreover, millennials have born with technology, so they are prepared to
be more efficient in this area. They know more languages so they are prepared to
communicate and relation to national and international world. They also have good
academic career, they worked in team and they are multitasking. The most difficult
part would be the idea of having a schedule to always follow, and the loyalty that they
could have to their brand.
3) Not considering scores has two effects. On the one hand has a positive effect,
because it encouragesthe equality between players, they realize that the important
thing is to having fun instead of winning. On the other hand, has a negative effect
because it could promote that players relax and they don’t take the game as
seriously as they could take it, the competitiveness has less importance. Children
keep scoring themselves because they feel fulfilled when they are making better than
the others. In some sports competing brings to improve teamwork, for example
football or basket. In other sports like swimming, people improve their
mental-strength. Competitiveness teach to people to fight hard for their objectives, so
if in the longterm people don’t compete, they will suffer of ambition.
4) We can think that making bed has no importance in our daily live, but it really has.
Because by doing your bed you learn that every obligation needs and effort. And you
learn that you have to be responsible and constant in order to achieving your
objectives. You learn to have routines.
5) Talking about equalitarian polices, even if you are rich or poor, tall or short you must
do it, because if you put big effort on that you will receive big reward.
6) Millennials have gone to schools where they where used to get their work evaluated
every day. So, they need feedback, specially the positive one. About the negative
feedback brands must treat it with time, introducing them ways to improve. In this
aspect older people may not feel comfortable, therefore brands will have to deal with
this problem. Millennials also are so ambitious; therefore, brands will have to
introduce manners to evaluate how workers are doing in order to make them
constant people. Lastly, it will be very important the incentives that brands give to
people in the long term in order to control the high expectations they have.
2. Participatory structures
In this case what happen is that every person can decide by itself if they want to contribute
or they prefer not to do it. And I think that not always could be efficient because, even if in
some situations can work, like what it happens in SEMCO. I think that if we cooperate
always will appear the position of the free-rider, and in the long term it would be very difficult
to cooperate. However, I think that the decision of everyone is very important and every
individual should be involved in the biggest decisions of the company, but not in all of them.
3. Is it rational to vote?
The thing is that voting is not rational, because you don’t have any type of payoff when you
go to the box and you throw your ideas, you just feel fulfilled. Moreover your individual vote
is nothing comparing all the votes. It is almost impossible that you change something by
voting, the result will be the same. Moreover, voting is very costly, because you need to
spend a lot of time to get up-to-date and deciding which option is better. And at the end of
the day, we live in a country that politicians corrupt a lot. So you may vote the person who
steal your money.
