Geometrical properties of the structural element:

Width of the beam w = 250 mm

Depth of the beam d = 450 mm
Concrete cover = 30 mm
Depth of the tension steel from extreme compression fibre ds = (450 – 30) mm
= 420 mm
Depth of compression steel from extreme compression fibre dc = 30 mm
Thickness of slab = 150 mm
Number of rebars in tension zone of the beam = 4D16
Number of rebars in compression zone of the beam = 2D16
Shear ties (2 arms) = D8@200
Mechanical properties of structural element:
Concrete compressive strength fc’ = 30 MPa
Yield strength of steel fy = 400 MPa
Given data:
Moment due to dead load at SLS = 60 KN-m
Moment due to live load at SLS = 70 KN-m
Target bending moment resistance = (1.6 x 60) + (1.2 x 70) = 184 KN-m
Target shear resistance = 172 KN

Area of steel rebar in tension zone = 804.2477 mm2

Area of steel rebar in compression zone = 402.1239 mm2
Step 1: Check for strength limit criteria (without FRP)

For flexural moment:

Existing moment strength without FRP = φMn
Mn = Cc(d - dc) + Cs(d – dsc)
Cc = α1. fc’.β1.w.dn
𝐶𝑐 = (0.85) × (30) × (0.8285) × 250 × 𝑑𝑛 = (5281.6875 × 𝑑𝑛) 𝐾𝑁
Eqn. (1)
Cs = AscEsɛsc
400 ɛ𝑠𝑡(𝑑𝑛− 30)
𝐶𝑠 = (402.1239) × ( )× ( ) Eqn. (2)
ɛ𝑠𝑡 420 − 𝑑𝑛

Ts = Ast. fy = 804.2477 mm2 x 400 N/mm2 = 321699.08 KN

From equilibrium equation:

Ts = Cs + Cc

After putting the values from above equations,

𝑑𝑛 − 30
321699.08 = ( ) x 160849.56 + 5281.6875(dn)
420 − 𝑑𝑛

dn = 58.506 mm & 452.85 mm

452.85 mm is not possible, so dn = 58.506 mm

Mn = 309010.408 (420 – ((0.8285 x 58.506)/2)) + 12683.965 (420 - 30)

Mn = 127.242 KN-m
φMn = 0.9 x 127.242 = 114.52 KN-m
(1.1MDL + 0.75MLL) = (1.1 x 60 + 0.75 x 70) KN-m = 118.5 KN-m
Here, φMn < (1.1MDL + 0.75MLL)
Since the above check is not satisfied, strengthening of the structure with the
FRP is not allowed.
FOR SHEAR STRENGTHENING
NOTE: Since at this stage I was lacking the access of ACI 318, so the shear strength
contribution by concrete and transverse steel reinforcement are calculated as per AS 3600
(draft copy) and further FRP reinforcement is designed as per ACI 440.2R – 17.
Shear strength of a beam excluding transverse shear reinforcement (Vuc)

(fc’)1/2 = 5.47722 MPa < 8 MPa

bv = 250 mm
dv = maximum of 0.72 D or 0.9d = 378 mm

Assuming the size of the maximum aggregate particle is not less than 10 mm. As per clause
8.2.4.6,
Θv = 36o

𝐴𝑠𝑣.𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 41.0791 𝑚𝑚2 ≥ 43.75 𝑚𝑚2
𝐴𝑠𝑣.𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 43.75 𝑚𝑚2
𝐴𝑠𝑣 = 100.53096 𝑚𝑚2
Since 𝐴𝑠𝑣 > 𝐴𝑠𝑣.𝑚𝑖𝑛
𝐾𝑣 = 0.15

𝑉𝑢𝑐 = 0.15 × 250 × 378 × √30 = 77.639 𝐾𝑁

𝑉𝑢 = 𝑉𝑢𝑐 + 𝑉𝑢𝑠 = 193.868 𝐾𝑁

Current shear strength of beam section is less than 172 KN, i.e., the required shear target
strength so FRP reinforcement is required.
NOTE: From here the design is as per ACI 440.2R – 17.
