Predicting Cricket Performance: Neural Networks in Athlete Forecasting for

International Competitions
This study explores the use of neural networks to predict individual athletes' performance in
international sports competitions, specifically cricket. Cricket is a popular game with mass
following in British Commonwealth Countries and other countries, and national teams visit
other countries for bilateral matches and play in World Cup tournaments. The researchers

14
classify cricketers into three categories: performer, moderate, and failure. Data on cumulative
player performance from 1985 onwards until the 2006–2007 season was collected.

The neural network models were progressively trained and tested using four sets of data. The
trained neural network models were then applied to generate a forecast of the cricketer's near-
term performance. Based on the ratings generated and by applying heuristic rules, the
researchers recommended cricketers to be included in the World Cup 2007.

The popularity of cricket has increased tremendously over the last decade due to the influx of
television and cable networks broadcasting cricket matches all over the world. The cricket
team's performance has become a symbol of national pride, and team selection assumes
utmost importance. To create a winning team, cricketing nations have different programs to
identify and nurture talented cricketers in their early years. However, only a few individuals
achieve greatness or are able to play continuously for a long period.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has started ranking cricketers and teams numerically
by assigning points to them based on various factors. However, these rankings have not been
used extensively to select cricketers. In this study, neural networks are used to address the
first issue of predicting individual cricketer's performance in the future.

The test environment is the recently concluded ICC World Cup played in West Indies. From
the ten full members of the ICC, eight countries were chosen from the ten full members. The
data on the cumulative performance of these chosen cricketers was collected until the 2006–
2007 season.

In the 2006–2007 season data, the researchers excluded the World Cup performance data and
used the World Cup as an avenue to measure the effectiveness of neural networks in
predicting cricketers' performance. They also obtained the World Cup probable list of
cricketers published by different countries. The neural networks were used to generate
performance predictions for the World Cup probable cricketers. Some recommendations were
made before the World Cup tournament and deposited with an independent party.

technical assists like Hawk-Eye has sought to support more precise decisions. This paper
summarises research on how Hawk-Eye functions—using video feeds, mathematically
reconstructing ball trajectories, making predictions, and a geometric technique called
triangulation to trace a ball’s path. It analyses the most vital use of Hawk-Eye in adjudicating
appeals for leg-before-wicket dismissals through the Decision Review System (DRS), aided
by an “uncertainty range” and “250cm rule” to account for margins of error. Beyond
officiating decisions, this review examines how Hawk-Eye’s visualisations of wagon wheels,
pitch maps, ball spin, and batters’ scoring zones have provided richer analyses to improve
strategy and commentary. In summary, this paper argues that while the Hawk-Eye technology
has had an overall positive impact, integrating more physics could enhance precision, avoid
disrupting the inherent essence of cricket, and sustain the benefit of doubt resting with the
umpires on the field.

Assessing Cracks in Cricket Pitches to Aid Game Strategy
This paper reviews a method to detect and assess cracks on cricket pitch surfaces using image
processing techniques. Cricket, as one of the world’s most beloved sports, is profoundly
shaped by the playing field. Variables in pitch composition can advantage batsmen or
bowlers, often in unpredictable ways as cracks develop during matches. By tracking crack
evolution, the proposed approach aims to equip teams with richer insight on ball movement.
The method handles pitch imaging through multi-camera capture, preprocessing via entropy
filtering and edge detection. Key data on crack contours and dimensions gets extracted,
alongside ball speed before and after surface impact. These datasets then connect in a
machine learning model, revealing correlations between crack features and ball velocity
changes. Initial testing shows the feasibility to quantitatively link cracks to recoil trends. Yet
further tuning and physical validation are warranted. In closing, this review spotlights an
innovative avenue to forecast ball behavior as environmental factors shift, using the arena
itself as informant. The approach could deepen strategic dexterity for players and spectacle
for viewers. But care merits in upholding gameplay artistry, avoiding over-automation.
Refinements sidestepping these concerns may yield an ethically sound, decision-aiding pitch
analysis tool.

subjective human judgment. This review discusses harnessing AI techniques, including
predictive analytics and automated decision recommendations, to reduce errors and biases. Its
summaries research on training AI models on vast match data to predict intricacies like spin,
swing, and pitch conditions that influence trajectories. A systematic methodology is proposed
encompassing: data gathering and annotation, feature engineering, model development using
neural networks, system integration and testing, real-time decision support for umpires,
continuous retraining as the game evolves, and collaboration across stakeholders. While
results demonstrate AI’s potential for increased precision, ethical aspects around
transparency, fairness, and upholding gameplay artistry remain paramount. In closing,
thoughtfully integrating AI’s capacities into cricket’s adjudication process could enrich the

22
sport, but values of integrity and inclusion should steer development. Refining DRS through
an ethical AI partnership promises to enhance the game’s essence.

THE FUNCTION AND IMPACT OF MEDIA WITHIN THE WORLD OF CRICKET.

Evolution of Fan Engagement in Cricket Advertising:

This review talks about how cricket ads have changed, especially in how fans join in. In the
past, we watched on TV or at the stadium, but now we use phones and tablets. There's a cool
old ad from the 90s and a newer one from Uber Eats that reached lots of people.
Cricket is a big deal in India, especially during events like the World Cup. Companies spend
a bunch on ads. Before, fan engagement was about fans talking, but now it's more about
creating feelings. Social media, contests, emails, and cool websites help make these
connections.
Good fan engagement doesn't just show brands; it also makes people like the brand more,
finds good marketing chances, gives helpful data, reaches new places, and makes the brand
more noticeable. During cricket events, ads use fun stuff, target people in real-time, show up
everywhere, do tasks automatically, involve users, and partner with famous people.
In the future, things like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) might make
watching cricket even cooler. FIFA World Cup already uses AR, showing where things might
go.
To keep up with what fans like, companies can use tools like Web Engage. These tools make
sure fans get special experiences, ads reach fans in many ways, brands are seen a lot, data

30
helps make good choices, and things can change really quickly. This makes cricket ads more
interesting and fun for everyone.

Understanding How Fans and Cricket Teams Connect

This review talks about how fans connect with cricket teams and how important it is for
sponsors. Cricket has a lot of fans worldwide, and making these fans excited and engaged is
crucial for cricket organisations and sponsors. The review talks about what fan engagement
means, how it has changed over time, and why it matters for sponsors.
The paper says that when fans and teams have a real connection, it leads to better
partnerships, smart decisions based on fan data, and people seeing the brand in a more
positive way. Fan engagement helps sponsors reach fans all over the world, making their
brand more visible and bringing in more money for cricket.
The review paper also shares some cool ideas for engaging fans, like using social media,
creating fun experiences at live games, and teaming up with famous people. It mentions that
even though there are challenges, like fans having short attention spans and limited budgets
for some teams, keeping fans excited and involved is super important.
In the end, I would like to say that fan engagement isn't just a good idea – it's a must for
cricket to keep growing. It predicts that in the future, as things get more digital, fan
engagement will keep changing cricket and making it even more successful globally.

The Social Media Revolution in Cricket Consumption

This article explores how social media is making a big impact on how cricket fans follow the
game. In the past, people mainly listened to the official commentary, but now, with platforms
like Twitter and Facebook, things are different. The paper talks about how commentary has
changed over time, moving from radio to TV and now the internet. It looks at the numbers
from famous matches, like the one between India and Pakistan, showing how much fans
engage on social media.
The article talks about how fans are not relying as much on traditional commentary.
Examples like @cricBC on Twitter show that fans actively share their thoughts and create a
lively community online. There's a concern about the quality of regular commentary,

31
especially when ex-cricketers are paid for it. The article praises alternative commentary
options like Guerrilla Cricket and White Line Wireless for giving regular fans a chance to
join the conversation.
It says that the internet and social media have made cricket commentary more democratic,
giving fans a more immersive experience. Mainstream commentary, it notes, is slow to
change and not connecting well with the audience. Alternative commentary is becoming more
popular because it includes more people. In the age of social media, fans aren't just listening
– they're actively involved, shaping how everyone talks about their favourite sport.

Evolution of Media in Cricket

The development of cricket media has been an interesting journey spanning more than a
century, with Western countries realising its importance as early as 1867. This examination
explores the media's influence in defining the sport's ecology as well as its historical base.
Early Media Adventures:
Imagine a long time ago, in 1440, when cricket news first appeared in newspapers! These
newspapers were like messengers, telling everyone about club news, match scores, and even
which brands players liked. For example, in 1994/95, the Australia Cricket Board used
newspapers to handle corruption allegations during the Pakistan and Sri Lanka Tour.
Magazines, which are a bit like newspapers, also helped fans stay updated. Cricket Monthly,
cricket 365, Spin, and Cricket World Magazine became friends of cricket fans, sharing the
latest news from the cricket world.
Big signs called hoardings joined in, especially in busy places like Kolkata. They wanted to
get people excited about cricket events and brands, making a lot of noise in the crowd.

Broadcasting Through Airwaves:

Imagine the first-time cricket came on the radio in 1924 by ABC. It was like getting live
updates of ICC competitions for fans. Even now, stations like Talks-port 2, BBC Radio 5, and
98.3 keep sharing cricket news with fans.
Television, a big player, changed everything. Live broadcasts got fans excited, and remember
those cool Pepsi ads with Sachin Tendulkar and Shah Rukh Khan? They made cricket super
fun for everyone. During the World Cup 2003, cricketers joked around in Pepsi ads, making
the event even more special.
Sponsorship Magic:

32
Sponsorships took cricket to new heights, going beyond newspapers and TV. Brands like
Kookaburra, MRF, and GM became friends with cricket, not just promoting products but also
making people love the sport. It was a win-win, with fans enjoying cricket, and brands
making good profits.
In a nutshell, this review shows us how cricket and media have been buddies for a long time.
From old-school newspapers to today's radio, TV, and sponsorships, each part of this journey
has made cricket a global favourite. It's like cricket and media are two peas in a pod, growing
together and making the world love the game.

Changes in Indian Cricket Media Rights

This is about how things are shifting in Indian cricket media rights, especially with less
money coming in recently. Viacom18, owned by Reliance, got the rights for the Indian cricket
team's matches for Rs 67.8 crore per game. This is a big drop from 2018 when Disney Star
got the rights for Rs 6138.1 crore for five years.
Why did the money drop? Well, there aren't as many India matches happening, and people
aren't as excited about them. Also, the big players like Virat Kohli aren't playing in every
match. Disney Star, who used to make money from these matches, is now losing.
It is also said that, companies are being careful because they already spent a lot on IPL and
ICC rights, around $9 billion. The starting price for these rights was 25% less than before,
showing that how people watch cricket is changing.
The experts also say that the overall extra money companies are willing to pay for these
rights is way less compared to IPL. That's because there are fewer T20 matches, people aren't
that into bilateral matches, not many platforms are bidding, and advertising is tough.
Now, Jio Cinema, owned by Reliance, is expected to become even bigger in online streaming.
This could make things harder for other companies like Sony and Disney+Hotstar.
To sum it up, this review tells us that Indian cricket rights are going through some changes.
Less money is coming in, big players are losing interest, and online streaming is becoming
more important.

Transforming Fan Engagement in Sports Sponsorship

This involves how brands are changing the game in connecting with fans during big sports
events, focusing on the Indian Premier League (IPL). Fan engagement isn't just about

33
catching the buzz around a game; it's about smartly linking brands with fans, especially when
excitement is at its peak.
The recent pandemic made marketers get creative in connecting with audiences. With empty
stadiums, they had to figure out ways to bring the fan experience to millions watching from
home. Ideas like life-size cardboard cutouts, scoreboard takeovers, and tech-driven promos
aimed to keep fans engaged.
While getting attention before an event is still crucial, this review suggests that brands can
make a bigger impact by being part of the action during the event. Media sponsorship,
usually about building a brand, now opens doors for more interactive communication.
The IPL is a main example, with the 2021 edition getting an incredible 400 million views on
digital platforms. Brands are realising the goldmine of engaging fans during these events.
Real-time interaction not only strengthens the connection with fans but also makes the fan
experience better with tech twists.
Brands are now taking a more dynamic approach, moving from the usual promotions to using
technology for live interaction with fans during events. The perks? More engagement,
surprising fans, and adding extra excitement, creating stronger memories and connections.
The review uses case examples to illustrate this change, like the Sun-feast Dark Fantasy 'Fun
Inside' campaign, a cricket game for Snickers India, and a real-time predict-and-win game for
Kingfisher during the IPL. These examples reveal how tech is used to craft unique and
rewarding experiences for fans.

Cracking the Code of IPL Fan Excitement: Case study on Royal Challengers Bangalore

This talks further into the secrets of keeping cricket fans super excited during the Indian
Premier League (IPL), with a special focus on what Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has
been up to. We will explore how team performance, city size, and having famous people on
board can make fans go wild.
Imagine this, when a team wins a lot, it gets a ton of fans on Twitter – about 70% more, So,
winning matches is like a magic potion for getting more fans. Also, if the city and state where
the team is from have a lot of people, it means more fans too – around 43% and 51% more, to
be exact.
Now, let's talk about famous people. If a team has Bollywood stars or cricket legends
supporting them, it's like having a magnet for fans. There's an incredible 78% connection

34
between how popular these famous folks are and how many fans the team gets. So, teams
without a famous face might want to think about getting one.
Taking a closer look at RCB, we see that even though their brand value went up by 10.36%,
their fan excitement took a hit when the team didn't perform well. Poor performance equals
fewer searches and fewer excited fans. Checking out what people say in the news and on
Twitter about RCB players is also super important. If people are happy with the players, more
fans join in.

36
THE INTEGRATION OF AI WITHIN CRICKET’S MARKETING STRATEGIES.

Decoding Sponsorship and Ambush Marketing Dynamics

Sponsorship is like a business investment where companies support an activity to gain

commercial and marketing benefits. However, the rise of ambush marketing, often called
"parasite marketing," is causing ethical concerns. Critics argue that companies using ambush
marketing exploit rival sponsorships, which could harm the overall good of sports.
Ambushers create an impression of involvement without paying, focusing on their own
interests, which can harm the spirit of sports (Schmitz, 2005). A study in India on IPL
marketing shows that while sponsors benefit, too many ads can negatively affect what
consumers think, leading them to switch. Loyalty is not just about ads; it's also about fans'
connection to their favourite teams rather than brand ambassadors.
Some people see ambush marketing as a clever business move. It's considered a positive
force in the free market, showing the real limits of exclusivity that official sponsors can
expect. Ambushers, by participating in cost-effective marketing, help figure out the true
market value of sports sponsorship. The dynamic relationship between sponsorship and
ambush marketing brings challenges and opportunities, emphasising the need for a balanced
and ethical approach in sports marketing.

The Amazing Changes in How We Watch Sports: Exploring Immersive VR in India

Virtual Reality (VR) has transformed how we experience cricket, especially during the IPL
2018. Whether through VR headsets or handheld devices, users can now feel like they're right
in the stadium. This technology, mixing Augmented Reality (AR) effects with real-time
experiences, is reshaping the landscape of sports broadcasting, offering a more immersive
and interactive way to enjoy the game.
Impact on Cricket and Viewers
Cricket, a cultural phenomenon in India, has become a key focus for technological innovation
in sports viewing. With a massive 69% viewership in the Indian sports market, cricket holds
strategic importance for broadcasters. The adoption of VR aligns with the broader shift
towards online content consumption, marking a significant change from traditional
broadcasting. The success of VR experiences during IPL matches on platforms like Hotstar-

37
underscores the industry's anticipation of a tech-driven future, providing viewers with unique
and personalised ways to engage with live sports.
Empowering Viewers through Interactivity
Crucially, the concept of interactivity, explained by Kiosks, helps us understand the impact of
VR. High interactivity in VR enriches the viewer's experience with real-time responsiveness,
spatial independence, and sensory complexity. As cricket continues to be a cultural
touchstone, VR not only adapts to changing content dynamics but also lets viewers actively
participate in live-action sports, pushing the boundaries and transforming the viewer's role in
the sports spectacle.

Evolution of Sports Broadcasting in the Cable & Satellite Era

This review highlights the major shifts in how sports are shown on Indian television,
especially cricket, moving from Doordarshan's control in the 1980s to Star Network
dominating in the cable and satellite era. Cricket's economic importance, seen in the huge IPL
media rights deal, has greatly influenced how broadcasting works. When the media landscape
opened up during liberalisation, Star Network and others challenged Doordarshan's
monopoly. The essay emphasizes how initiatives like the "Digital India" campaign and
Reliance Jio's affordable internet have transformed access.
The growth of Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms, driven by Reliance Jio's success, has
transformed how we watch live sports, creating both challenges and opportunities for
traditional TV companies. Using the Critical Political Economy (CPE) framework, the
analysis explores how TV conglomerates adapt to this changing landscape, considering the
interplay between the government and businesses. Despite the rise of streaming services,
media conglomerates, like Hotstar, still dominate.
The literature delves into the complex relationships between the internet, government
involvement, and corporate power, showing how the Indian government supports Reliance
Jio for internet expansion while safeguarding against Silicon Valley's influence. Despite
protective measures, media giants stay influential, using strategies like branding and mergers
for success in the streaming business. The review concludes by emphasising the intricate
politics in the Communication's Political Economy, where talk often doesn't match the real
changes in media.

Impact of Advertising Elements on Attitude Change Among Cricket Fans: A
Comprehensive Review

This literature review delves into the evolving behavior of individuals towards
advertisements, shedding light on the challenges faced by the advertising industry in
capturing and retaining viewers' attention. The surge in ad-blocking features and the
preference for ad-free experiences on digital platforms underscore the shift in consumer
power, allowing them greater control over content consumption.
Interestingly, the realm of sports, particularly events like the Indian Premier League (IPL),
has witnessed a unique dynamic. Despite the proliferation of brand ads, sponsorships, and ad
exposure, fans exhibit a tolerance for these elements, making the sporting spectacle an
exception. However, this tolerance doesn't translate into a genuine interest in ads, considering
the dwindling attention spans of contemporary viewers.
The review further dissects the impact of ad types, distinguishing between conventional TV
commercials and virtual ads. The placement and timing of ads during a live match emerge as
pivotal factors influencing viewer engagement. The study emphasizes the importance of ad
duration, frequency, and celebrity endorsements in shaping the viewer experience.
The conceptual frameworks presented in the literature underline the multifaceted dimensions
influencing attitudes towards advertising. Elements such as entertainment, informativeness,
irritation, credibility, and demographic relevance play pivotal roles. The review concludes by
emphasising the potential of advertisements to enhance user experience by delivering
entertaining and informative content, albeit with the challenge of balancing visibility without
causing viewer irritation.

39
brands to not only promote but deeply connect with their target audience, leveraging the
immense popularity of cricket in nations like India, Pakistan, Australia, and England.
Changing Dynamics of Cricket Season Marketing:
The dynamics of brand engagement during cricket seasons have evolved significantly. Real-
time engagement, including live tweeting, quick updates, and interactive social campaigns, is
now standard. The focus has shifted to fan-centric content, such as emotional advertisements,
relatable memes, and videos, creating personal connections with cricket enthusiasts.
Innovative activations during events like the IPL enable brands to create memorable
experiences.

Youth Cricket Participation and Retention: Insights from a New Zealand Study

The study conducted by Gaskin and Garland (2007) delves into the intricate dynamics of
youth cricket participation in New Zealand, addressing the perennial challenge of recruiting
and retaining young players. With a nationwide survey encompassing 858 participants, the
authors elucidate six fundamental motives driving involvement in cricket, namely team spirit,
competition, mastery, extrinsic rewards, fitness, and the joy of being active. Significantly,
team dynamics, competition, and mastery emerged as robust predictors of the propensity to
continue playing. Despite the exploration of various initiatives, the study reveals a lack of
substantial impact on the current engagement of players. Intriguingly, discontinued players
were more likely to cite the allure of alternative sports or activities as reasons for cessation.
However, initiatives such as social competitions, improved equipment, affordability, and
interactions with top players emerged as influential factors for lapsed players to reconsider
participation.

The last decade has seen exponential growth of social media, fundamentally changing firm-
customer interactions from one-to-many to more personalised one-to-one communication.
Social media has empowered customers to become active collaborators, compelling firms to
rethink and adjust their marketing strategies. The widespread availability of information and
affordability of search engines present new challenges for firms in effectively managing their
marketing and branding approaches. Social media has transformed customers into influential
contributors, actively participating in promoting products and services. This dynamic shift
necessitates reevaluating traditional marketing methods. Despite prior attempts to review
social media marketing literature, understanding remains fragmented with discrepancies
among researchers. This article aims to systematically review and integrate existing literature,
offering comprehensive insight into the role of social media in marketing. The proposed
framework categorises research into five themes based on value creation perspective: social
media as a promotion and selling outlet, a communication and branding channel, a

42
monitoring and intelligence source, a CRM and value cocreation platform, and a general
marketing and strategic tool.

CONCLUSION

The intricate relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the evolution of cricket has
become a focal point of extensive research and analysis. This comprehensive literature review
explores the multifaceted interplay between AI and cricket, unraveling numerous crucial
themes that are actively reshaping the landscape of this beloved sport. The exploration spans
diverse dimensions, encompassing performance optimization, predictive analytics, immersive
engagement, interactive participation, and integrated marketing.

A cornerstone of the advancements discussed in this review is the application of advanced

computer vision capabilities and pose estimation techniques. These cutting-edge technologies
play a pivotal role in quantifying subtle biomechanics nuances, particularly in areas such as
precise batting mechanics. Traditionally discernible only qualitatively by human experts,

43
these biomechanics intricacies are now decoded by AI systems, providing granular insights
that not only enhance batting techniques but also contribute to the refinement of bowling
strategies. The automated recognition of slight variations in player techniques emerges as a
valuable tool for coaches and captains, enabling them to optimise strategic planning and,
consequently, influence the outcome of matches.

The integration of historical GPS data, inertial sensor data, and other relevant inputs into
sophisticated machine learning algorithms has given rise to injury prediction modelling in
cricket. This groundbreaking approach facilitates evidence-based workload balancing, injury
likelihood forecasts, and personalised mitigation strategies.
The review underscores the pivotal role of AI in match outcome forecasting, emphasising the
application of techniques such as linear regression, neural networks, and random forests.
These methodologies are applied to extensive datasets spanning decades of matches, enabling
accurate predictions across different formats of the game. The predictive capability of AI
guides crucial decisions related to team selection, player purchases, in-game tactic
adjustments, and broadcasting priorities, thereby influencing the overall dynamics of cricket
strategy and management.

These technologies simulate lifelike experiences for fans, allowing them to virtually face
bowlers in simulated nets or walk alongside their favourite players on the field. Cricket's
governing bodies and broadcasters are increasingly recognising the potential of these
immersive technologies to retain tech-savvy audiences, particularly the millennial
demographic that seeks greater interactivity in their sports consumption. Partnerships with
gaming engines and metaverse platforms further extend the reach of cricket into the digital
realm, creating new revenue streams through the sale of virtual merchandise, NFT
collectibles, and interactive virtual stadiums.

The democratisation of sports commentary through social media emerges as another

significant aspect highlighted in the review. Traditional broadcasters now acknowledge and
incorporate fan perspectives shared on platforms like Twitter and Reddit. This shift in

44
dynamics has led to crowd-sourced innovations that humanise sports discourse, providing a
more inclusive and diverse narrative around cricket.

Lastly, the transformation in sponsor marketing playbook is discussed, where traditional

advertising has given way to real-time brand activations during pivotal moments in matches.
Utilising hashtags, emoji reactions, and creative contests, sponsors engage with fans in real-
time, incentivising organic evangelism and community building. This dynamic approach not
only enhances brand visibility but also aligns with the evolving preferences of modern sports
consumers.

In conclusion, this extensive analysis systematically synthesises the existing body of cricket
literature, revealing AI's multifaceted and increasingly pivotal role in shaping the future of
the sport. With substantial investments in innovation and careful ethical oversight, 21st-
century cricket is poised to be a thriving ecosystem that balances technological evolution
with traditional heritage. AI in cricket not only preserves the game's human creative artistry
but also takes it to unprecedented heights, unlocking untapped potential to solidify cricket as
a cherished sport for generations to come. The synthesis of AI and cricket represents a
synergistic partnership that enhances the sport's competitiveness, entertainment value, and
global appeal, setting the stage for a promising future where innovation and tradition coexist
seamlessly.
