1. GENERAL
1.1 Purpose
This datasheet, together with the referenced Specification for Piping Materials, describes the
minimum requirements for the manual and gear operated valves (Ball, Gate, Globe, Check, Butterfly
and Needle valves) to be used for Project.
2. DESIGN
2.1 General
Corrosion allowance for all valves with carbon steel bodies is 3mm.All valves with stainless steel
bodies have a corrosion margin of 0mm.
Valve pressure-temperature rating shall be in accordance with the applicable rating table for the
appropriate material group in ASME B16.34, and shall be full pressure rating design.
For Flanged end valves, Valve body welded with end flanges should not be used as much as
possible.
All material shall be new and the interior and exterior surface shall be free of dirt, sand, debris
and excessive rust.
If any impact testing or heat treatment is required for any of the materials as per ASTM / ASME
codes, VENDOR shall perform accordingly & shall meet the code requirements.
VENDOR shall be fully responsible to meet the design requirements indicated in this
specification, and guarantee the same.
1-1/2" and below valves should be forged; valves may be cast or forged for 2" and above.
All forgings shall be fine grain. Carbon steel used in the manufacture of bulk valves shall be
fully killed.
Soft seat and seals materials shall be suitable for the design conditions. Pressure-Temperature
rating chart or table for soft seats and seals shall be submitted by VENDOR.
Body seat rings of valves (gate, globe, needle, check and ball) shall be type seats. Soft seats
shall be fire safe design and performance tested per API 607, related test certificates and
reports shall be submitted by VENDOR.
Lifting lugs and valve supports should be provided for valves 8" and above. Lifting points on the
gear box or actuator shall never be used for lifting the actuated valve.

Project No.: CW2368055
Total Page:50
Uni-directional valves or valves with a preferred direction of flow shall have a flow direction
arrow cast or stamped on the body.
Trim materials, particularly stainless steels, should be carefully selected to prevent galling. Low
melting point alloys shall not be used.
Globe and gate valves shall have outside stem and yoke with bolted bonnets. Bonnets on check
valves shall be bolted.
All Valves having external threads on the Gear Operator, Gland, etc shall be provided with a
suitable thread protection device to protect the thread from the sand.
Valves with non-rising stem or valves with gear operators shall have position indicators, which
cannot be wrongly oriented, either on initial assembly or during subsequent dismantling and re-
assembly. These shall be clearly graduated and visible to show the open and closed position of
the fully assembled valve. The VENDOR shall include details of the proposed indicator at the bid
stage.
Stem design shall be blow out proof. The anti blowout stem configuration shall be capable of
withstanding the full internal pressure of the valve. Stem retention by means of threads is not
acceptable. The stem retainer ring or collar shall be integral with the stem.
Antistatic design - When valves are provided with soft seats, their design shall ensure electric
continuity between the obturator and the body, by means of an antistatic device.
For all metal to metal seated valves, the maximum hardness of the body seats, body back seats
and the closure (gate, wedge, disc, blade, etc.) seating surfaces shall be suitable for the required
service. There shall be minimum hardness differential of 50 BHN between body and closure
seating surfaces on stainless steel valves and 20 to 30 BHN for carbon steel valves.
Valves shall be designed to operate freely after the stem has remained in one position for an
extended period of service or till the next periodic maintenance.
Weld overlay on valve trims shall be performed as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and Welding
Procedures to be used shall be qualified in accordance with ASME Section IX.
Separate removable valve parts shall be positively secured against loosening. Spring tension pins
are prohibited for locking of internal valve components.

The ball and stem of all ball valves shall be of solid construction of the material specified. Fabricated
type ball (i.e. with welded in line) are not acceptable.
Ball valves shall be designed to seal in both directions, i.e. bi-directional, against all pressures up to
the maximum service pressure rating for the class unless specified otherwise in the material
requisition or the valve data sheet.
The design of valve seal / seat arrangement shall be such that the soft seal shall not displace or get
out of shape both under pressure and during the depressurization of the piping system.
The design of ball as either floating or trunnion depends on valve size and rating. Generally small
bore valves can be accepted as floating ball design. Table-2 below serves as a guide for the design
of ball as either floating or trunnion mounted design:
Class 150
½” to 2” 3” and larger
Class 300
Support Legs to be provided for valves 8" and above to facilitate the support beneath the valve.
The design of globe valves of size 1-1/2” and below shall be to API 602 and 2” & above shall be to
BS 1873, unless noted otherwise on the valve data sheets.
All globe valves shall be suitable for throttling duties. An arrow, to indicate the correct flow directions
shall be part of the body casting or forging or shall be embossed on the valve body.
Gear operated globe valves shall have operators of a design that will allow the valve to be set in
intermediate throttling positions for long periods without having to lash down the hand wheel.
The design of check valves of size 1-1/2” and below shall be to API 602 and 2” & above shall be to
API 594 unless noted otherwise on the valve data sheets.
The design, construction and material requirements shall be as specified or in the valve data sheet.
Dual plate check valves shall be of retainer less design. Flow direction of check valves shall be
marked on body with permanent arrow.
