CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION

1. Introduction

Note-taking is a fundamental skill used to capture and organize information during

lectures,
meetings, or while reading. Effective note-taking involves actively listening,
summarizing key points, and using abbreviations or symbols to condense information.
Various techniques exist, including outlining, mind mapping, and the Cornell method,
each tailored to different learning styles and purposes. The goal is to create concise,
organized notes that aid comprehension, retention, and later review of the material

1.1.Objectives

1.1.2. Specific objectives

 To define Note-taking technique.

 To know the methods of Note-taking technique.
 How to use these methods

1.2. Methodology

 This assignment was compiled through bibliographical based on research.

CHAPTER II - THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2. Note-taking technique

According to Allen (2019). Note-Taking technique is a way to capture ideas in insights

so you can make better decisions. And effective note taking is about more than just
whiting down information. It's about creating system that allows you to easily find a
information you have captured. Allen recommends using a system of “buckets" or
categories to organize your notes, so you can easily find the information you need when
you need it.

According to Tony Buzan (n.d), note taking technique is the process of capturing,
distilling, and organizing information in a way that makes it easy to retrieve and use
later. It's about more than just jotting down notes - it's about developing a system that
allows. He recommend using a variety of tools and techniques to make note taking more
effective, such as mind mapping, outline, cornell method and using color-coding.

According to (Pauk, 1940) Note-taking technique refers to the practice of capturing and
summarizing key points, ideas or information during lectures, reading, discussions for
later reference or study.

2.1.Methods of Note-taking technique.

Some popular Note-taking techniques include:

1- Cornell method

2-Outlining method

3-Mind mapping

4-Charting method

5-Sentence method

6- SQ3R method

2.1.1. Cornell method

According to Walter Pauk (1950), Cornell method it's a systematic approach to note
taking that involves dividing the page into three sections: the cue column, the notes
column, and the summary section. As I mentioned, this method is great for organizing
and reviewing notes.

2.1.2. Outline method

According to Mortimer Adler (1940), outline method is a note taking technique that
was first developed by Mortimer. This method involves creating an outline of the
information being presented, with main ideas and sub-points. It's a good method for
organizing and structuring your notes and it can also help you identify key concepts.
When using this method, it's helpful to use symbols, abbreviations, and other notations
to make your notes easier to read and understand.

2.1.3. Mind mapping method

According toTony Buzan(n.d) ,mind mapping method he explain how to use mind
mapping to enhance memory, learning, creativity, and productivity. They also provide
examples of how to create mind maps for different purposes, such as planning, problem
solving, and brainstorming. The book also includes a number of case studies of people
who have used mind mapping to achieve success in various fields.

2.1.4. Charting method

Charting method involves creating charts to organize and summarize information. The
chart can be used to compare and contrast information, highlight key points, and show
relationships between concepts. This method can be especially helpful for visual
learners. Henry C. Browning, (1970).

2.1.5. Sentence method

According to Ray Stangl (1960), sentence method it’s a technique that involves writing
down key points in the form of sentences, rather than short notes or bullet points. This
method can be especially helpful for those who struggle with summarizing information
or making connections between ideas.
7

2.1.6. SQ3R method

SQ3R method is a popular and effective study technique designed to help students
better understand and retain information from textbook or other reading materials. The
acronym “SQ3R” stand for survey, question, read, recall and review. The first step is to
survey the material by reading the headings, sub-headings, and any other summaries
provided. The next step is to ask yourself questions about the material, such as "What
do I already know about this topic?" and "What do I want to learn from this material?"
The third step is to read the material, taking notes as you go. The fourth step is to recite
or summarize. Francis P. Robinso (1940).

3. When note-taking techniques are used?

According to Walter. P (2013), Note-taking techniques are used in various situations

such as:

1. Academic Setting: During lectures, seminars, and classroom discussions to capture

important points, concepts, and ideas presented by instructors.

2. Meetings and Conferences: To record discussions, decisions, action items, and key
takeaways from business meetings, conferences, and workshops.

3. Research and Reading: While conducting research or reading scholarly articles,

books, or reports to summarize key findings, arguments, and references for future use.

4. Creative Projects: For brainstorming sessions, idea generation, and outlining plans for
creative projects such as writing, designing, or problem-solving.

5. Self-Study and Learning: When studying independently from textbooks, online

courses, or tutorials to organize information, clarify concepts, and reinforce learning.

6. Professional Development: To document insights, reflections, and lessons learned

from training sessions, workshops, or personal development activities.

7. Task Management: As a tool for task lists, reminders, and tracking progress on
projects, assignments, or goals.

Overall, note-taking is a versatile technique that can be applied in various contexts to

enhance comprehension, retention, and productivity.
8

3.1. The importance of Note-taking technique

Notes taking technique is a crucial skill for effective learning and information retention.
Note by hand, comparing to typing, leads to better comprehension and retention of
material. (Mueller & Oppenhimer, 2014).

. Additionally, note - taking encourage active with the contract, ending in deeper
understanding and critical thinking. (Kiewra, 2002).

Moreover, notes serve as personalized study resources, allowing learners to review and
reinforce key concepts, aiding long-term memory. Overall employing effective Note-
taking techniques enhances learning outcomes and academic success (Kiewra, 2002).

Taking notes helps you to concentrate and listen effectively. Selecting what to notes
down increases your understanding. Notes create a resource for exam preparation. Notes
taken in classes often contain information that cannot be found elsewhere.

3.2. Objective of Note-taking technique

The objective of notes taking technique is to efficiently capture, organize, and retain
information for later reference or use. Notes-taking enhances comprehension, aids in
memory, and facilitate the review and synthesis of information. Note-taking servers to
select, compress, and encode information, thus contributing to better understanding and
retention of the material (Piolat.A, 2005).

CHAPTER - III

4. Conclusion

By the end of the assignment we concluded that note-taking techniques play a crucial
role in
various aspects of academic, professional, and personal life. They help enhance
learning,
Improve organization, facilitate review, and promote better retention of information.
Whether
Used in lectures, meetings, research, or brainstorming sessions, effective note-taking
Techniques enable individuals to capture, organize, and understand information more
efficiently.
Therefore, incorporating and mastering note-taking methods is essential for maximizing
Productivity, comprehension, and success in different endeavors.
