Some things to know before going into this pattern:
- This pattern is for personal use only. You may sell finished products made using this
pattern, as long as you credit Craftii Crochet (tag @craftiicrochet on social media) as the
pattern designer.
- The head/body, legs, arms, horns, and ears will be crocheted in the round. The muzzle
and tail will start from a chain foundation.
- The gluing in this pattern is optional.
- This pattern involves some frequent yarn changes.
- Keep in mind that your end results will all depend on the type of yarn and hook size you
use, as well as your tension.
Materials
- Yarn
o Hobbii Friends Cotton
o Colours: white, black, brown, grey
o Yarn weight: super fine (sock, fingering)
- Small amount of black thread for nostril embroidery
- Hook size: 2mm
- 3mm safety/craft eyes
- Darning needle
- Scissors
- Pins
- Polyester fiberfill
- Stitch marker
- Fabric glue
Finished Size
The size of your cow will depend on the weight of your yarn and the size of your hook. My cow
came out to approx. 2 inches tall and approx. 2 inches wide.
Terminology
This pattern uses US terminology.
Abbreviations
st = stitch
sts = stitches
mr = magic ring
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
inc = increase
dec = decrease
sl st = slip stitch
(12) = number of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round
R = row/round (ex: R5 = row/round 5)
Ears
Make 2.
Make one black ear and one white ear.
R1. 6sc into mr (6)
R2. (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
R3. sc in each st in the round (9)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Do not stuff the ears.
Press the ears flat and sew a st or two on one side of the flattened ear, to keep that side of the ear
pinched.
Legs
Make 2.
Use brown yarn.
R1. 6sc into mr (6)
R2. (sc, inc) x 3 (9)
R3. sc in each st in the round (9)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
We will be stuffing the legs later when sewing them onto the
body.
Arms
Make 2.
Start with brown yarn.
R1. 6sc into mr (6)
R2. sc in each st in the round (6)
Switch to white yarn.
R3. sc in each st in the round (6)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Stuffing is optional, but for reference, I did not stuff the arms
of my cow.
Sew the open end of each arm shut.
Horns
Make 2.
Use grey yarn.
R1. 3sc into mr (3)
R2. sc in each st in the round (3)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
No need to stuff the horns.
Muzzle
Use pink yarn.
Make a ch of 4.
R1. start in the second ch from the hook, 2sc, inc, now
continue down the other side of the ch, 2sc, inc (8)
R2. sc in each st in the round (8)
Sl st in the next st, then fasten off, leaving a long tail for
sewing.
We will be stuffing the muzzle later when sewing it onto the body.
Tail
Leave a long starting tail.
Use white yarn.
Make a ch of 3.
R1. start in the second ch from the hook, sl st into each st in
the row (2)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Tail Tuft
Cut a long strand of black yarn and weave it loosely through the end (the part of the tail without
the yarn tails attached) of the tail. Once you have weaved approx. 5 large loops at the end of the
tail, cut down the center of each loop. Take a separate strand of black yarn and tie it around all
the tuft strands to create a little bundle.
Finish by trimming your tail tuft to your desired length.
