Speech to Persuade Working Outline

Introduction

I. I want you to think about the shirt you're wearing today.

II. Do you know who made these clothes?

III. Do you know how much that person was paid? Do you know what country it was made in?

IV. If youre anything like me, the answer is most likely no.

V. And This is the nature of the fashion industry-there is lack of connection between our clothes

and those who made it, all thanks to fast fashion.

VI. Fast fashion, with its cheap prices and constantly changing trends, has become a normalized.

VII. However, the true cost of these clothes extends far beyond the price tag. The 20 dollars I paid

for this shirt is nothing compared to the price the planet and the people who made it had to

pay.

VIII. Today, I will be explaining what fast fashion is, its effects on the planet, and on the people,

and why you should boycott fast fashion brands.

Body

I. So, what is fast fashion?

A. It is a business model that involves quickly producing and selling trendy, inexpensive

clothing items.
B. In other words, it’s basically when clothes are poorly made, widely purchased, rarely

worn, and quickly thrown away, and then we go out to buy more only to repeat this

cycle.

1. The goal of fast fashion companies is to encourage you to spend more money

on more clothes that you use for less time, so they can make more money of

course.

II. That’s how fast fashion effects the companies, but how does it affect the planet?

A. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world; estimated to come

second only to the oil industry.

1. The production of synthetic fibers like polyester, which is used extensively in

fast fashion, relies heavily on fossil fuels.

2. Additionally, the dyeing and finishing processes involve toxic chemicals that

often end up in our rivers and oceans, and even our local water systems,

poisoning aquatic life and poisoning us by contaminating our water sources.

III. The human cost of fast fashion is equally troubling.

A. The industry thrives on the exploitation of workers in developing countries, who

often work in unsafe conditions for extremely low wages.

B. Factories are notorious for poor working environments, including long hours, lack of

proper safety measures, and minimal labor rights.

1. This combination leads to an unstable system that will eventually collapse.

2. And it did, literally. The Rana Plaza Factory collapse in Bangladesh killed

over 1,100 garmet workers; majority of them women and children, already

enduring inhumane working conditions.

C. By supporting fast fashion, we are complicit in perpetuating this cycle of exploitation

and suffering.

Conclusion

I. Before I conclude this speech, let me share some alternatives to fast fashion.

II. First, you can purchase clothes from fair trade and ethical brands.
III. A common argument is that ethical brands are more expensive, but when you consider the

cost-per-wear-value of items, slow fashion items have a lower cost per wear value than fast

fashion in the long run. But if youre not paying the price for fast fashion, someone else will.

Are you comfortable with that?

IV. Second, a more affordable optino that im a big fan of shopping and donating to thrift stores is

a great way to give clothes a new life. Buy only what you need, repair, and upcycle garments.

V. Finally, the free market has shown that where there is demand, supply is created. And this

demand comes from our desires and taking actions.

VI. By changing our buying habits, we influence the industry towards sustainability.

VII. In conclusion, it's time for us to take a stand against the detrimental practices of the fast

fashion industry.

VIII. Every purchase we make is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.

I. So, let us choose to vote no to fast fashion, vote to reduce our environmental footprint, and

vote for fair and humane working conditions with our purchases.
