Ans. Tarapada was a fair skinned and smart young boy. His attractive smile and large eyes

was that of a religious person. All these qualities of outlook made him quite impressive. It
attracted Motilal Babu so much that he wanted to enjoy the boy’s company as his host and
asked him to have food with him (Motilal Babu).
2. Describe the boy Tarapada’s actions that indicate that he seemed wiser than his age.
How did his actions influence Annapurna?
Ans. Tarapada prepares some vegetables and gets the dish ready like a skilled cook. He takes
out a comb and a clean white garment and puts on his sacred thread in a gentle manner. He
could do everything with ease. All of his activities show him a bit different from the youngsters
of his age who often fails to have such a control over their conduct. These aspects of his
personality make him appear more mature than his age.
The way he conducts himself like a mature person has a positive impact on Annapurna. She is
surprised at his good behaviour and starts liking this boy with affection.
3. ‘Tarapada was Young, so his life-story was brief; but the boy was a complete original’.
In what sense the writer calls the boy Tarapada ‘a complete original’? why did family
and villagers give up hope for him?
Ans. Tarapada has been called ‘a complete original’, in the sense of being different and unique.
He is liked and loved by all more than other children of his age. There was no reason to force
him leave his village and run away. But Tarapada leaves his village and joins a touring jatra
troupe. He, unlike others, does not accept the affection and ties of love. His constant quest for
travel and a desire a to lead a life of a nomad without a thought for the past make him altogether
different from others i.e. ‘a complete original’. His quest for wandering made the family and
villagers give up hope for him.
