Humility – Assignment
Let’s Review:
What is Humility?
Freedom from pride or arrogance
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
— Proverbs 11:2
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less.” C. S. Lewis
“Humility, that low, sweet root, from which all heavenly virtues shoot.” -Thomas Moore
“For example, one study examined 105 small-to-medium-sized companies in the computer
software and hardware industry in the United Studies. The findings revealed that when a
humble CEO is at the helm of a firm, its top management team is more likely to collaborate
and share information, making the most of the firm’s talent.” https://hbr.org/2017/04/if-

Another study showed that a leader’s humility can be contagious: when leaders behave
humbly, followers emulate their modest attitude and behavior. A study of 161 teams found
that employees following humble leaders were themselves more likely to admit their
mistakes and limitations, share the spotlight by deflecting praise to others, and be open to
new ideas, advice, and feedback.
Jim Collins in his book Good to Great argues that “Seemingly ordinary men…Level 5 leaders
channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great
company. Its not that Level 5 leaders have no ego or self-interest. Indeed they are incredibly
ambitious – but their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not themselves.” “The
great irony is that the animus and personal ambition that often drive people to positions of
power stand at odds with the humility required of Level 5 leadership.”
They rely on their team to think together, to engage in honest dialogue to see deeper
understanding of problems.
They are more likely to gain support from others and therefore more likely to execute plans
well.
