Study the past simple form below.

* We use past simple for:

(1) Finished or completed actions at a specific time in the past before now
In 1888, Dr. Pemberton sold the secret formula to a businessman named Asa
EXAMPLE
Candler, who later formed a corporation.

(2) An action which happened repeatedly again and again


EXAMPLE As more and more people drank Coca-Cola, sales began to increase.

(3) An action which lasted for some time in the past


EXAMPLE During it’s first year, Coca-Cola sold an average of 9 drinks a day.
* Some common time expressions we generally use with past simple are:

TIME EXPRESSIONS: - yesterday - last year, week, month, night etc.


- [time] + ago - in + year (1888, 2001, etc.)

* Regular verbs in the past simple end with -ed

EXAMPLE A pharmacist named John Pemberton created the recipe for Coca-Cola.

* Irregular verbs have different endings. Here are some examples:

sell - sold | take - took | cost - cost | have - had | drink - drank

* We use the subject + did not (didn’t) [+ verb] for the past simple in the negative form.
EXAMPLE One thing Dr. Pemberton didn’t sell was his secret recipe.

EXERCISE I Write the past simple for each verb. (10 irregular verbs / 5 regular verbs)

The inventor of Coca-Cola (be) a pharmacist. He (take)


some secret ingredients and (boil) them into a
syrup. After he (make) the syrup for a medicine, he (taste)
it. He (think) that the recipe was really tasty.
So, the pharmacist (sell) his recipe as a drink. He (name)

9 cents center per glass in the beginning. As more people (drink)
