Periscope

Hook:

Do any of you ever run into a situation where something you’re looking for is just in the most
inconvenient difficult to see spaces? Maybe you’re looking for your favorite snack on the very top shelf,
or you’re trying to see if your pencil rolled under the couch? Regardless of what it was its always so
incredibly frustrating and so that's why today we’re going to take a look at how we can use physics and
optics to help us in these very situations

Background Information:

- Periscope - looking device that allows you to see at elevated levels

Materials:

Cardboard rolls or sheets

2 Mirrors for each

Scissors/exacto knives

Glue

tape

Safety Considerations:

In this activity it may be best to use somewhat dangerous materials like hot glue and Exacto knives. Tese
should be handled with caution and potentially by the instructors
Mirrors may be sharp or can break so they should be handled with caution

Procedure/Script:

1. Start off with a discussion about optics

a. What are something we already use to change the way we see things
i. Think binoculars or telescope
b. How do mirrors change the way things work
2. Hand out the mirrors and start playing around with using them to see different parts of the room
a. Stand in one place not moving and ask the campers if they can find a way to position the
mirrors so that you in your current position can see a certain object in the room that
otherwise you cant see
b. How should they position the mirrors if they needed to see something above their
height?
3. Cut the ends cardboard roll on a 45 angle then reattach them with either glue or tape rotating
them so that the tube takes on a “Z” formations
4. Insert the mirrors so they are in a 45 degree angle
5. Split the class into two, and have each group make a cipher for the other group to decode, have
them write 5 five messages for the other group to decode and also provide them with a key.
6. The instructors will then take these messages and put them up high so they need to use the
periscope to see ad decode them
7. First group to finish wins

Accessibility:
List at least three ways to appeal to 3 different types of learners (as seen in the handout) for multiple
means of expression, engagement, and representation.

Visual/Spatial:
- Offer written instructions
- Show diagram of how a periscope typically works

Auditory:
- Give clear directions
- Explain concepts out loud while demonstrating

Interpersonal:
- Have the campers work together to figure out solutions and problem solve
