1.1 INTRODUCTION
Organizational studies are the examination of how individuals construct organizational
structures, processes, and practices and how these, in turn, shape social relations and create
institutions that ultimately influence people. Organization is the structure or mechanism that

CHAPTER 2
INDUSTRY PROFILE

2
2. INDUSTRY PROFILE

2.1 HISTORY OF THE INDUSTRY

Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon with improved strength and fracture resistance compared
to other forms of iron. Many other elements may be present or added. Stainless steels, which
are resistant to corrosion and oxidation, typically need an additional 11% chromium. Because
of its high tensile strength and low cost, steel is used in buildings, infrastructure, tools, ships,
trains, cars, bicycles, machines, electrical appliances, furniture, and weapons.

Iron is the base metal of steel. Depending on the temperature, it can take two crystalline forms
(allotropic forms): body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic. The interaction of the allotropes
of iron with the alloying elements, primarily carbon, gives steel and cast iron their range of
unique properties. In pure iron, the crystal structure has relatively little resistance to the iron
atoms slipping past one another, and so pure iron is quite ductile, or soft and easily formed. In
steel, small amounts of carbon, other elements, and inclusions within the iron act as hardening
agents that prevent the movement of dislocations.

The carbon in typical steel alloys may contribute up to 2.14% of its weight. Varying the amount
of carbon and many other alloying elements, as well as controlling their chemical and physical
makeup in the final steel (either as solute elements, or as precipitated phases), impedes the
movement of the dislocations that make pure iron ductile, and thus controls and enhances its
qualities. These qualities include the hardness, quenching behaviour, need
for annealing, tempering behaviour, yield strength, and tensile strength of the resulting steel.
The increase in steel's strength compared to pure iron is possible only by reducing iron's
ductility.

Steel was produced in bloomery furnaces for thousands of years, but its large-scale, industrial
use began only after more efficient production methods were devised in the 17th century, with
the introduction of the blast furnace and production of crucible steel. This was followed by
the Bessemer process in England in the mid-19th century, and then by the open-hearth furnace.
With the invention of the Bessemer process, a new era of mass-produced steel began. Mild
steel replaced wrought iron. The German states saw major steel prowess over Europe in the
19th century.

3
Further refinements in the process, such as basic oxygen steelmaking (BOS), largely replaced
earlier methods by further lowering the cost of production and increasing the quality of the
final product. Today, steel is one of the most commonly manufactured materials in the world,
with more than 1.6 billion tons produced annually. Modern steel is generally identified by
various grades defined by assorted standards organisations. The modern steel industry is one
of the largest manufacturing industries in the world, but also one of the most energy
and greenhouse gas emission intense industries, contributing 8% of global emissions.
However, steel is also very reusable: it is one of the world's most-recycled materials, with
a recycling rate of over 60% globally.

useful commodity or service. In general production means transforming inputs into an output
with value added the production department of the company is associated with the production
of quality products. Manufacturing of iron rods starts from identification of raw materials that
is steel or billets. The raw materials used are first tested for the chemical composition.
percentage of carbon, manganese, phosphorous and sculpture are checked and it’s ensured that
the chemical composition of ingots or billets come with specific limits.

The quality assured steel ingots are then charged into the re -heating furnace with the help of
pusher, the re-heating furnace is oil fixed. The ingots or billets are then heated to a
temperature of 1200c then these are subjected to different sections of cross section reduction
namely first second and third stages.
13
450 HP AC motor is used in this mill manufacturing unit. This unit is mainly divided into
two:

• Melting unit
• Re rolling unit

4.3.1 MELTING UNIT

The stored iron scraps with sufficient ferro additives are charged into the induction furnace.
Melting the charge is done by gradually increasing the power to temperature range of 1600
degree Celsius. primary stage from furnace and manually to the slag box.

After reaching the required level of molten metal liquid in the furnace.it is poured to the
ingots mould placed on the plate through tarnish hydraulically. Remove or separate the solid
ingots by gas cutting and stacking for dispatching.

ELEMENTS OF MELTING UNIT

• Furnace
• Gas Cooler
• Water Separator
• Dust Setting Tank
• Slurry Water pump
• Widened Secondary Hood
• Charging Ramp
• Primary Bag Filter
• Secondary Bag Filter
• Air Compressor 25 HP

4.3.2 RE ROLLING UNIT

The mild steel ingots are reached at the oil fired re heating furnace to increase the
temperature of the ingots at 1200 Celsius. Then they are passes through various processes of
the re rolling mill. The rolling mills stand for the reducing the cross-section reduction of the
heated ingots to the sizes of 8mm to 20mm diameter rod as required.

Then the rolled bars are passed through TMT process for strengthening and sending them to
the cooling bed then the rods are at the required length, bent and stacked for dispatching as
finished goods, in this re rolling mill third stage of cross section reduction is done.

14
ELEMENTS OF RE-ROLLING UNIT
• Reheating furnace
• Gas cooler
• Bags filter
• On line monitor
• Air compressor 25 HP
• Stack 36mm high
• Vent unary separator

4.3.3 PROCEDURE OF TMT (THERMO MECHANICAL TREATMENT)

It is the online heat treatment off in two successive phases. The billets ingots pass through a
21-stage processing and come out in a form of re in forcing bars. Being the first stage in TMT
process, these bars pass through a fully automated quenching box and are turbo cooled.as a
result, the outer layer of the bars solidifiers into marten site.

In the stage that itself temperature the heat from the inner layers of the bars surfaces up. Due
to this outer crust becomes more strengthened and these bars allowed cooling the temperature
in the cooling beds, at this stage the inner core of bars become ductile ferrite pearliest. This is
the reason it become popularized in the countries.
