CHAPTER TWO: INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY
2.1 Introduction to IT industry
IT refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware, software,
the Internet, or the people that work with these technologies. Information technology is the
study, design, development, implement, support or management of computer based
information system particularly software's application and computer hardware. It also details
technology based workflow processes that expand the capacity of an organization to deliver
goods and services that generate revenue. These days we are living in the information age
where IT becomes part daily life.
Information Technology (IT) is the application of computer and telecommunication equipment
to store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the context of a business or other
enterprise. The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and computer networks,
but it also encompasses other information distribution technologies such as televisions and
telephones. Several industries are associated with Information Technology (IT), including
computer hardware, software, electronics, semiconductors, internet and e-commerce. IT
industry is the collection of firms providing the different products and services digitally. It
workers can specialize in fields like software development, application management, hardware
or desktop support, server or storage administrator and network architectures etc. common type
so of IT careers are: Chief information Office, Chief Technology Officers , IT Directors,
System Administrator, Application Manager, Development etc.
Based on the storage and processing technologies employed, it is possible to distinguish four
distinct phase of IT development: pre-mechanical, mechanical, electromechanical and
electronic. This article focuses on the most recent period (electronic), which began in about
1940.
2.2 History of IT in Nepal
The history of IT and computers in Nepal dates back to not more than a couple of decades.
However, the growth of Information Technology here has been rapid. The major leap towards
the advancement in this field started when the first computer IBM 1401, a second-generation
mainframe computer was used in the 1971 census, although an electronic calculator called
“Facid” was used before in the 1961 census. Again, another second-generation mainframe
computer ICL 2950/10 was used for the 1981 census. The credit for introducing internet among
the people mainly goes to the private sector. Although the internet was initially limited only to
email services, in 1995, a company Mercantile Communications finally started the internet
services in the country. In 1998, Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), a
telecommunications regulatory body, was formed as per the Telecommunications Act 1997.
NTA holds the power to issue license to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Nepal.
Nepal indeed had come a long way in IT. There are several Nepali IT professionals working
across the globe. IT has become an inevitable need in all spheres of life in this land. Meanwhile,
the number of internet users has increased by considerable amount. While it was just about
0.2% of the total population in the year 2000 who had access to internet, it increased to about
82.79% by the year 2020 according to NTA. As a developing country, Nepal has availed of the
opportunities rapidly developed various sectors such as education, health, agriculture, tourism,
trade, among others, using information technology. Also for the development, are to be
maintaining by government by also involvement and investment on this field has to be
increased. Currently there are many companies established during past decades but due to lack
of effective regulating body from government and the political instability, of the country most
of the companies are on the stage of collapse. Also there are some companies that became
success to establish their renowned name in Nepal IT market.
Small market like Nepal it becomes a challenges job for IT Company to exist in the competitive

CHAPTER FOUR: ANALYSIS OF ACTIVITIES
4.1 Brief Description of Activities Done
During the internship period I was assigned to do various task. Some of the task can be
described as below:
4.1.1 Installing and Configuring Banking Applications
Initially, I was assigned for installing banking software that were used by different branches of
SBL. Banking software is enterprise software that is used by the SBL to provide and manage
the financial products they provide. Within SBL, Flexcube software typically refers to core
banking software and all its interfaces that allows them to connect to other modular software
and to the interbank networks. During the internship period I was visited in different branches
of SBL to install the banking applications on branch PCs. Different software were install on
branch PCs such as Oracle Flexcube, Connect IPS, Meroshare, Mbanking etc.
Once installation was done, different configuration should done to effectively run the software
to serve the customer and banking functions by branch staff. Configuration is necessary for
compatible system.
For configuration banking software different task need to be done such as network
configuration, browser configuration, domain setup, IP address verify.

Figure 4.12Flexcube Work Space

4.1.2 Installing and updating software
Rather than banking software, several others software also use in bank. They are MS Office,
antivirus, adobe acrobat, remote control software and operating systems etc. Branch staff does
not have authority to install, update and uninstall the software on the bank PCs. So it is also the
responsibility of IT department to install and update all the software that are used by branches.
To gain the productivity it is necessary to timely update the system and software.
4.1.2.1 Installation of Operating System
An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the
computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows
you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's
language. As a IT intern in SBL, I had install operating system (i.e window 10) on multiple
computer using bootable USB drive. Steps during installation are:
 Connect the USB flash drive to a new PC.
 Turn on the PC and press the key that opens the boot-device selection menu for the
computer, such as the Esc/F10/F12 keys. Select the option that boots the PC from the
USB flash drive.

Figure 4.23Window Setup Page

 Windows Setup starts. Follow the instructions to install Windows.
 Remove the USB flash drive.
4.1.2.2 Install Antivirus
Antivirus installation is another important aspect. Currently “KASPERSKY” antivirus is being
installed in every computer within the network and the updates to the software are downloaded
from one of the main servers of the IT department.
4.1.1.3 Remote Control Software
Remote-control software is programming in a central or server computer that is used to control
other computers (or their users) at a distance, either under the control of an administrator or at
the request of the user. In bank these software are used to remotely access the PCs to solve
specific problems occurring in different branch. Some of the remote control software that are
used at bank are :
4.1.1.3.1 AnyDesk
Connect to a computer remotely, be it from the other end of the office or halfway around the
world. AnyDesk ensures secure and reliable remote desktop connections for IT professionals
and on-the-go individuals alike.

Figure 4.3 Anydesk Workspace

4.1.1.3.2 Tight VNC viewer
VNC is a great client/server software package allowing remote network access to graphical
desktops. With VNC, you can access PCs from everywhere provided that PCs is connected to
the Internet.
Figure 4.45Tight VNC Homepage
4.1.3 Setting Up Peripherals
In bank intra networks there are hundreds of computer are used for providing banking services.
Many peripherals have to be set up in order to complement the computer within the bank
network. There are devices which are connected to the computer and it helps the computer
function. These devices contain both the input devices, which are used to give command to the
computer and the output devices, which help computer showing the result to the banking staff.
Some peripherals devices need to be configure in order to work properly as bank requirement.
Devices that need to be configure in bank are:
 Mouse
 Keyboard
 Printers
 Scanner
 Display devices
4.1.4 Monitoring and maintaining computer systems and networks.
Install, configure, and support an organization's local area network (LAN), wide area network
(WAN), and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. Monitor network to ensure
network availability to all system users and may perform necessary maintenance to support
network availability. Maintenance include several task. Some of them are:
 Backup data and information.
 Run antivirus and spyware and scans regularly.
 Clean up your software.
4.1.5 Providing technical support across the company.
The primary focus of technical support is to resolve a technical incident or problem in the bank.
These incidents are either perceived or actual deficiencies with the PCs, banking software,
Peripherals devices and Computer networks, that bank staff is seeking support for. The support
is required for following task:
 Determine what is not functioning properly
 Resolve the issue as quickly
 Maintain a friendly and supportive vibe
4.1.6 Computer Name and Window Domain Setting
Assigning computer name and domain in bank is highly recommended, because it allows other
computers to access your computer to access shared file or printer easily by using computer
name with in the bank. Window Domain is used to connect all the PCS with bank sever.
A Windows domain is a form of a computer network in which all user accounts, computers,
printers and other security principals, are registered with a central database located on one or
more clusters of central computers known as domain controllers. Authentication takes place on
domain controllers. Banking staff who uses computers within a bank domain (i.e sbl.com)
receives a unique user account that can then be assigned access to resources within the SBL
domain. The concept of Windows domain is in contrast with that of a workgroup in which each
computer maintains its own database of security principals. Steps use for setup computer name
and domain setting are as follows:
 Go to Start, right click Computer and click on Properties.
 System Properties window will appear, and you can see the configured computer name
and also workgroup. Just click Change settings to change those settings.
 System Properties window will appear. Select Computer Name tab and then click
Change
 Enter computer name and domain name (i.e sbl.com) in Computer Name/Domain
Changes window. Finally click OK.
Figure 4.56Computer Name/Domain Change
4.1.7 Mail Setup using POP3
Electronic mail (email or e-mail) is a method of exchanging mail between people using
electronic devices. There are multiple mail services such as Google Gmail, Microsoft Outlook.
SBL use Microsoft Outlook to access emails of banking staff, stakeholders of the bank.
Microsoft Outlook is a personal information manager software system from Microsoft,
available as a part of the Microsoft Office suite. SBL use business version of Microsoft outlook.
During internship I have learn to manually setup Microsoft Outlook using POP3 (Post Office
Protocol). Step for manually outlook setup are:
 Open Microsoft outlook.
 After welcome window appear, Click next.
 Click manually configure server settings. Click Next.
 Then click on POP or IMAP

 Click the Advanced tab, and change your settings accordingly. Then Click OK.
Figure 4.78Outlook E-mail Setting
 You should be returned to the Internet E-mail Settings window.
 Click the Next button. Click the Finish button.
4.1.8 Sharing the PC
Sometimes it is necessary to share files inside the bank or branches. Transferring files between
machines requires just a few changes to computer’s settings. So to do following step are
required:
 Right-click on the folder you want to share.
 Select Give Access to > Specific people.
 From there, you can choose specific users and their permission level (whether they can
read-only or read/write). After making your selection, click Share.
 If a user doesn’t appear on the list, type their name into the taskbar and hit Add. You
can also share with everyone.

CHAPTER FIVE: CONCLUSION
5.1 Conclusion
At the end, the internship period was very fruitful and provides the practical experience and
implementation of the theoretical knowledge that was during the class time and had opportunity
to develop the professional skills and self-confidence on the related interest field. I also had the
knowledge on installation and configuration of the banking software as well as installation of
various networking related devices. And also developed the self-motivation as well as self
confidence. The main achievement from the internship period is the confidence inside before
starting the profession on related field. Along with technical gain, I also had the knowledge on
handling the banking issues in a systematic and easy way. It was a wonderful experience to
work in Siddhartha Bank Limited with highly professional group of people. It was a great
opportunity to learn about the professional environment and develop a professional attitude.
The way one person helped the other and the whole department functioned together showed
how a group of professional work together to meet a desired goal. The importance of good
leadership among managers and discipline among the staffs is most for smooth functioning of
any organization or any department within it. Similarly, communication skill among all the
staffs is also a necessity for the growth of any organization. It will certainly go as a confidence
boosting factor in coming days.

5.2 Lesson Learnt

Coming to an organization and experiencing in-job atmosphere exposed me to real organization
which was way different than theoretical organization with which I was familiar with.
Everything, it be principles, guiding procedures, organizational culture, motivation, stress
handling, all were so different
