CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM
While Tamil Nadu State Council of Higher Education OANSCHE) came fonrard to inkoduce CBCS in
all the affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu in June 200E, St. Xavie/s College had already introduced CBCS as
early as June 2002 for UG courses and June 2003 for PG courses. The aim of the Choice Based Credit
System is to provide ample choice of subjects to students, based on the weighted credit point system. This
system offers the learners a chance to match their aptitude and interest with th€ subjects of their choice and
learn at their own pace. Thus St. Xavier's College gives every student an opportunity to study his/her respec{ive
course and pursue other courses from any other discipline simultaneously.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE RESTRUCTURED CURRICULUM
The academic programme fot the UG counre has t re followlng gan*al obJeclives :
1. To develop language skills in students through various pradical means and methods designed in the
curriculum
2. To sensitize the students to the social realities around them with a view to making them responsible
citizens and other-centred.
3. To develop the personality of the students to be able lo realize their potential and to interacl with the
society well.
4, To develop an in-depth knowledge in a selected area oftheir study.
5. To broaden the outlook of the student through interdisciplinary approach, to enable him/her to access
knowledge and use the same meaningfully.
6. To impart an education that promises an integrated growth of knowledge, skills and values and enable the
student to have confidence and positive outlook.
7. To sensitize them to social realities and prepare them to make this world a better place to live in by
participating well in the out reach programme (STAND)
STRUCTURE OF UG SYLLABUS UNDER CBCS
The UG syllabus under CBCS consists of five parts:

Part ll : English
Part lll : Core subjecis

Skill Based Eleclives
Environmental studies
Value Education
ln order to cater to the diverse needs of students, extra credit courses are conducted by the College.
ln the UG Course at least 6 Extra-Credit Courses (Self - Study / taught) will be ofiered by each
department; these are open to all the UG students. 1 Extra-Credit Course will be offered in each semester. 3
credits are allotted to 1 Extra-Credit Course. The duration of External Examination is 3 hours. The students
who choose the Extra-Credit Courses will register their names in the Office of the Controller of Examinations
before 31"1 July in the Odd Semester and 23'd December in the Even Semester.
Students are expected to enrich their knowledge and develop their skills by joining extra credit courses
outside the class hours. This facility enables the students to earn more credits.
1 From 201'1 Batch onwards minimum for a pass is 20/50 in the external examination and 40/100
in aggregate (internal + external), papers having both internal & external components for 50 marks
2 The papers having both Theory & Practical components, the minimum for a pass is 40/100 in
external Theory exams & 20/50 in external Practical exams and 80/200 for theory exams in
aggregate (internal + external) & 40i 100 for Practical exams in aggregate (internal + external).
5. For General English papers, the minimum for a pass is 16/40 in external theory exams & 4/10 in
external viva voce and 40/1 00 in aggregate (internal + external).

& the final results will be awarded to each student based on weighted credit point average system.
