CCC 430-431
Jesus means in Hebrew: "God saves." At the annunciation, the angel Gabriel
gave him the name Jesus as his proper name, which expresses both his identity
and his mission.18 Since God alone can forgive sins, it is God who, in Jesus his
eternal Son made man, "will save his people from their sins".19 in Jesus, God
recapitulates all of his history of salvation on behalf of men.

In the history of salvation God was not content to deliver Israel "out of the
house of bondage"20 by bringing them out of Egypt. He also saves them from
their sin. Because sin is always an offence against God, only he can forgive it.21
For this reason Israel, becoming more and more aware of the universality of sin,
will no longer be able to seek salvation except by invoking the name of the
Redeemer God.

CCC 73
God has revealed himself fully by sending his own Son, in whom he has
established his covenant for ever. the Son is his Father's definitive Word; so
there will be no further Revelation after him.

Integrating God’s Message in my life
 The teacher will discuss the passage to deepen the lesson.
 The teacher will stimulate questions that will make the students realize
the plan of God fulfilled in Christ.
 Everyone looks up to particular people as sources of inspiration.
 The holy men and women demonstrate to us by their lives that Jesus is
real and that everyone who aspires to follow in his footsteps can receive
the salvation that He brought about via His death on the Cross.
 The Old Testament contained a promise about salvation from sin, which
God, being a loyal God, keeps. Through Mary and Joseph, two holy
people, he fulfilled his promise of salvation. The tale found in the Gospel
of St. Matthew tells of the fulfillment of this promise: a young woman
named Mary gets engaged to a man the scripture describes as a righteous
man named Joseph.

The Covenants Fulfilled in Jesus

 Adam and Eve
 Abraham
 Noah and his Family
 Moses
 David

The New Covenant of Love

 God created humankind out of love and for love and it is also because of
love that He saved them. This love of God manifested in His gift of
salvation becomes visible in the person of His Son, Jesus.
 Jesus, by His words and actions concretely shows what love is, what it
means. in His teachings, He proclaims a radical kind of love-one that is
not limited within the circle of one's family, relatives, and friends but
extends even to one's enemies. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus
advocates forgiveness and a response of love to acts of aggression. He
tells His audience
 ,"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a
tooth.' But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When
6
someone strikes you on [your] right cheek, turn the other one to him as
well.
 If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your
cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with
him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your
back on one who wants to borrow(Mt 5:38-42)."Jesus also preaches about
a love that forgives not only once but "seventy seven-times (Mt 18-32)."
 Jesus also shows the love He preaches in His actions. He shows
compassion to the hungry, the sick, the rejected, and the possessed. He
forgives sinners and leads them to conversion. His greatest act of love for
His Father and for humankind is His death on the Cross. Though sinless,
 He carried the burden of humankind's sin and freed them from its
bondage. Indeed He is the Suffering Servant who offered His life as
expiation for our sins. It is by offering His life to save humankind that
Jesus fulfills God's promise of salvation made through the prophets.By
Jesus' teachings, works, and death on the Cross,
 He fulfills the new covenant of love-the covenant that brings about the
salvation of humankind. Through this new covenant, salvation becomes
real again, although in an unbloody way in the celebration of the Holy
Eucharist.
 We thank God, our Father, for fulfilling His promise of salvation in
Jesus. We thank Jesus for offering His life to save us from sin and for
continuing to save us through the sacraments, especially in the Holy
Eucharist.
 Through our frequent reception of Jesus' Body in the Eucharist, we shall
be able to witness to the salvation He brings and lead others to believe
that He indeed is the Savior promised by God, the Father.
