Learning Competency
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to differentiate imaginative writing from other
forms of writing (HUMSS_CW/MP11/12-Ia-b-1).

Recall
Writing is considered one of the macro skills a student must learn. It has
different forms:
● Imaginative writing, or creative writing, is the art of creating texts. It
attempts to inspire and entertain people. It may be literary or nonliterary.
An imaginative text that is literary may fall under one of the four literary
genres: poetry, fiction, drama, and creative nonfiction.
● Academic writing refers to the texts that are created in the academic
setting. Its purpose is to inform the readers about a certain issue, provide
them with an analysis that is based on evidence, and convince them to
believe something using strong, valid arguments. Examples of this type of
writing are research papers, theses, and dissertations.
● Professional writing, or business writing, refers to the form of writing
that serves as communication tools for the people inside a particular
agency, company, or organization. It may also be used to contact outside
entities on behalf of the organization. Examples of this type of writing are
business letters, memorandums, emails, and newsletters.
● Technical writing refers to a special type of expository writing that aims
to help its target audience to be cognizant of a concept or a process

related to the said fields. Examples of this type of writing include

instruction manuals, recipes, legal disclaimers, and safety procedures.

In order to be an effective writer, you need to follow the creative writing

process. This process has five steps:
● Step 1: Generate an idea. Come up with an idea using any of the
prewriting strategies that you know. These strategies include outlining,
free writing, and clustering.
● Step 2: Create a draft. A draft is the preliminary version of the text you
are creating. It might take some time to finish your draft but do not give
up.
● Step 3: Revise the draft. Revising is the act of making some changes to
the draft. This process is important for you to see if there are some
problems with regard to the accuracy of the content of the text you
created.
● Step 4: Proofread and edit the draft. Proofreading and editing are
closely associated with each other. The former is the act of carefully
checking for inconsistencies and errors the text might have in terms of
spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and formatting. The latter, on the
other hand, is the act of correcting writing issues such as grammar,
sentence construction, and content inconsistencies.
● Step 5: Publish the text. Publishing is the act of making your text ready
for public distribution. This is the ultimate goal of the writing process.
