SCIENCE INVESTIGATORY PROJECT PROPOSAL

Proposed Title:

Production of biodegradable food wrapper from sweet potato

(Ipomoea batatas) vines and tubers
Objective:
The primary objective of this Science Investigatory Project (SIP) is to
investigate the feasibility of sweet potato as a biodegradable food
wrapper with the goal of determining their potential as an alternative
food wrapper. The research aims to scientifically validate if we can
produce biodegradable food wrapper using sweet potato’s vines and
tubers.
Target Problem:
The project addresses the environmental and health concerns associated
with harmful traditional plastics. The aim is to provide an alternative
biodegradable plastic using sweet potato’s vines and tubers.
Biodegradable plastic using sweet potato’s vines and tubers takes fewer
fossil fuels and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions that harms the
planet.
Properties of Biodegradable Plastic:
Biodegradability: Biodegradable plastics have the ability to be broken down by
biological processes, typically within a reasonable timeframe, into natural
elements, such as water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.
Environmental Impact: Unlike traditional plastics, biodegradable plastics have
the potential to reduce environmental pollution and waste accumulation,
particularly in landfills and marine environments.
Material Composition: Biodegradable plastics can be made from various
sources, including plant-based materials such as corn starch, sugarcane, and
cellulose, as well as certain biodegradable polymers derived from
petrochemicals.
Mechanical Properties: Biodegradable plastics can exhibit a wide range of
mechanical properties, including flexibility, strength, and durability, depending
on their specific composition and intended application.
Degradation Conditions: The rate of biodegradation and the conditions
required for degradation can vary based on the type of biodegradable plastic.
Factors such as temperature, moisture, and microbial activity can influence the
degradation process.
Applications: Biodegradable plastics are used in a variety of applications, such
as packaging, agricultural films, etc. However, the specific applications and
performance characteristics may vary depending on the type of biodegradable
plastic used.
Regulations and Standards: Many countries have established regulations and
standards for biodegradable plastics to ensure their performance and
environmental impact. These may include certifications and labeling
requirements to help consumers identify genuine biodegradable products.
