EXTENSION OF VARDHAN’S
PUSHYABHUTI(VARDHAN) DYNASTY
● INTRODUCTION:-
● The decline of Gupta Empire resulted the splitting northern India,
● Various kingdom emerged, Vardhan dynasty was one of them.
● Vardhans were the feudatory of Guptas.
● Capital of Vardhan’s was Thaneshwar(Krushetra, Haryana).

PRABHAKAR VARDHANA:-
● Founder of the empire.
● He established matrimonial alliance with Mukharis of Kannauj.
● After the death of Prabhakar, his son Rajyavardhana came on the throne.
● He was feudal lord of later Guptas.

HARSHA VARDHANA(606-647)AD
● Harsha Vardhana succeeded his brother at the age of 16.
● He was know as the last Hindu king.
● Originally Harsha was worshiper of Shiva, but later
converted to Buddhism.
● Hieun Tsang visited in his court and converted to him
into the Mahayana Buddhism.
● Harsha prohibited animal killing for food.
● He adopted the title “Sakalottarapathanatha”
(Lord of the entire north) or Uttarapathanatha.

● 5th Buddhist Council or Assembly was held during the
● Time of Harshavardhana at Prayag, this continued
for 75 days.
● Hieun Tsang was invited by Harsha at Prayag for Council.
● Kumbh Mela was started by Harshavardhana.
● Hieun Tsang also wrote about the Kumbh Mela in his
book SI-YU-KI.
● According to Hieun Tsang there was dowry and Sati system
was Prevalent in the society.
● Also he wrote that there was no widow re-marriage in the society

● According to Hieun Tsang Shudras were known as Agriculturist.
● Harsha shifted his capital at Kannauj.
EMPIRE EXTENSION
● After the death of Shashanka he captured Bengal, Bihar, Orissa.
● He defeated king of Vallabhi but after that Harsha married his
daughter the king of Vallabhi Dhruvabhatta.
● But when Harsha tried to conquer South India, Chalukya king
● Pulakeshin II defeated him in 620AD on the bank of river Narmada.
● After defeating Harsha, Pulakeshin adopted the titles-
● Sakalottrapathanatha, Uttarapathanatha, Dakshinapathanatha

● Harsha also ruling some part indirectly through his feudatory-
like Sindh, Kashmir, Nepal, Jalandhar, Kamrup.

● Harsha’s reign marked the beginning of feudalism in India.

● He himself was an accomplished writer.
● Harsha wrote- Ratnavali, Naganand, Priyadarshika,
all in Sanskrit.

● Kadambari- Administration of Harsha

● For some time Hieun Tsang was also in the court wrote Si-Yu-Ki,
In this book he mentioned about his generosity and justice.
● Harsha generously supported the Nalanda University.

● TRADE & REVENUE:-


● He maintained a good tax structure.
● 1/4th of all the collected taxes were used for charity and for cultural purpose.
