Equilibrium Constant Calculations

Please fill in each ICE table for each reaction tube A-C and provide example
calculations for the specific values indicated below each table.

Table 1. Evaluation of Equilibrium Concentrations-Tube A

(mols) EtAc + H2O --> EtOH + HAc

I 0.0507 0.261 0.0 0.0

C -.0225 -.0225 +.0225 +.0225

E .0282 .239 .0225 .0225

Kc Kc = [ EtOH ] [ HAc ]/[ EtAc ] [ H2O ]= 0.0751

Sample Calculations Tube A:

Initial moles of EtAc
Density EtAc = 0.893 g/mL
Mass EtAc = Density x Volume = 0.893 g/mL x 5.00 mL EtAc = 4.465 g EtAc
Moles = (Mass EtAc/ Molar Mass EtAc) = (4.465 x (1 mol EtAc/ 88 g EtAc) = 0.0507 initial mol EtAc

Initial moles of H2O

Density of H2O = 1.00 g/mL Volume of H2O added = 0.00 mL
Moles of H2) added= ((Density x Volume) / Molar Mass) = ((1mL x0 mL)/ mL) / (18.0 g / mol)) = 0.0 mols of H2O added
Initial moles of H2O = moles of H2O added + moles of water in 5.00 mL of 3 M HCl
Initial moles of H2O = 0.0 mols of H2O + 0.2611 mols H2O = 0.261 mols H2O total

Calculate total moles of acid from the titration:

Moles NaOH = Volume NaOH x Molarity NaOH

Moles NaOH = 37.90 x 0.991 = 37.5589/1000 = 0.03756 moles

0.03756 moles of NaOH = 0.03756 moles of total acid

Remove moles of HCl from total moles of acid:

Moles HCl = Volume HCl x Molarity HCl

Moles HCl = 0.00500 L HCl x 3.02 = 0.0151 mols

HCl = 0.0151 moles of HCl

Moles HAc = Total moles Acid – Moles HCl

Moles Has = 0.03756 moles of acid – 0.0151 moles of HCl = 0.02246 moles HAc

C -0.0205 -0.0205 +0.0205 +0.0205

E .0201 0.2965 0.0205 0.0205

Kc Kc = [ EtOH ] [ HAc ]/[ EtAc ] [ H2O ] = .0705

Sample Calculations Tube B:

Moles of HAc at equilibrium

Calculate total moles of acid from the titration:

Moles NaOH = Volume NaOH x Molarity NaOH

Moles NaOH = 35.95 x 0.991 = 35.6265/1000 = 0.03562 moles

0.03562 moles of NaOH = 0.03562 moles of total acid

Remove moles of HCl from total moles of acid:

Moles HCl = Volume HCl x Molarity HCl

Moles HCl = 0.00500 L HCl x 3.02 = 0.0151 mols

HCl = 0.0151 moles of HCl

Moles HAc = Total moles Acid – Moles HCl

Moles Has = 0.03562 moles of acid – 0.0151 moles of HCl = 0.0205 moles HAc

Equilibrium Constant, Kc

Kc = [ EtOH ] [ HAc ]/[ EtAc ] [ H2O ]

Kc = (.0205^2)/(.0153)(.2917)
Kc= 0.1434

E .0123 .354 .0180 .0180

Kc Kc = [ EtOH ] [ HAc ]/[ EtAc ] [ H2O ] = 0.0744

Sample Calculations Tube C:

Initial moles of H2O
Density of H2O = 1.00 g/mL Volume of H2O added = 2.00 mL
Moles of H2) added= ((Density x Volume) / Molar Mass) = ((1.00 mL x 2.00 mL)/ mL) / (18.0 g / mol)) = 0.111 mols of H2O added
Initial moles of H2O = moles of H2O
